After intense competition and furious voting from fans the past two months, the trio walked home with another trophy each, adding to their growing collection at home

We waited with bated breath to see if a new Favourite Female Character champion would be unveiled at this year’s Star Awards 2013 Show 1. After weeks of intense competition, the number one question on everyone’s minds was if Kimberly Chia would dethrone Rui En and upset the latter’s winning streak at the online polls.

Well, the result speaks for itself: Rui En’s still the undisputed online favourite, emerging numero uno amongst her peers to win the Favourite Female Character award for the third year running.

Dressed in a fiery red Christian Dior dress semi-cloaked by a black blazer, Rui En admitted that this year’s award felt “especially meaningful” as it was presented by Chen Liping, her friend and “partner” in showbiz. “I’m still not used to attending such functions so her presence eased things up a lot for me. It felt comfortable and it was nice to have a partner around,” she said.

Briefly touching on the intense voting between her onscreen character and Kimberly’s Don’t Stop Believin’ character, Rui En felt that it is necessary to have “newbies rise up to the occasion” in this industry.

Dedicating her third Favourite Female Character win to RBKD, her supportive fanclub, the self-proclaimed pessimist even revealed that she was “prepared to lose” her title this year.

“I was even prepared to speak to the media about it [the loss] too!” she laughed.

Never one to focus or base her work on awards, the Joys of Life star added, “What I’m worried about this time round is my fans. I know they’ve put in a lot of effort and dedication to this year’s online voting. I’m touched by their hard work and this time, I really feel happy for them [with this win].”

To top it off on an even sweeter note, Rui En brought home not one, but two trophies, having shared the Favourite Onscreen Couple award category with Elvin Ng in Unriddle 2.

Thanking fans for loving their onscreen pairing in their separate backstage interview with xinmsn, Elvin confessed, “I don’t know what kind of chemistry we have (laughs)).”

Laughing in agreement, Rui En chimed, “It’s hard to put down in words the kind of chemistry we have actually.”

With 2013 shaping up to be a busy year for both actors and no drama collaboration in sight yet, Rui En expressed her desire to work with Elvin soon. “This is like satisfying our fans ‘cos they like seeing us together as well. It is for them.”

The usually upbeat, celebratory mood of the annual Star Awards Show 1 at the MediaCorp TV Theatre was nowhere to be felt last night.

The ceremony began on a sombre note, as colleagues of veteran actor Huang Wenyong struggled to come to terms with news of his death on Saturday.

The well-loved actor died of lymphatic cancer at age 60. Audience members in the theatre stood up and observed half a minute of silence; a two-minute video montage of his many TV appearances also played.

Actress Rui En, 32, donned a black jacket over her siren red gown out of respect to the late actor when she accepted her award for favourite on-screen couple with Elvin Ng, also 32.

1. Scene & Heard Pages 18-22

Story: Jonathan Fam

Our super anonymous, super insider Star Awards prediction

We huddled in dark corners, slipped secret notes and scanned our office for bugs just to get four MediaCorp insiders to reveal who they think will go home with a Star Award this year. And boy, is it going to be a tight race.

Best Actress

Ch 8 Senior Exec: “Rui En will win. She’s already won the Asian Television Best Actress award for this role.”

Ch 8 Actor: “She may not be an A-lister but Cynthia Koh’s acting talent is undeniable. She has a lot of depth and can make the audience feel what she’s feeling.”

MediaCorp Senior Manager: “Rui En’s acting is very refreshing. This role was very intense and it showed off her range as an actress.”

Ch 8 Drama Producer: “Rui En brought this character to life.”

8 DAYS Pick: Cynthia Koh’s turn as the long-suffering wife of a gambling addict who eventually succumb to the evils of gambling too, is the most gut-wrenching, rip-your-heart-out (and thus most award-worthy) performance of the lot.

Best Drama Serial

Ch 8 Senior Exec: “Don’t Stop Believin’ is the year’s highest-rated drama and an uplifting tearjerker. It has everything the judges are looking for.”

Ch 8 Actor: “I haven’t seen a drama as good as Game Plan in a long time. From the storyline to the acting to the cinematography. It makes you feel like you’re watching a movie.”

MediaCorp Senior Manager: “Poetic Justice has beautiful people, beautiful locations and was beautifully shot. It’s nice to run away from reality a bit.”

Ch 8 Drama Producer: “A lot of effort was put into Unriddle 2.”

8 DAYS Pick: Game Plan trumps the competition on all fronts, from story premise to production values to quality of cast.

As this year’s Star Awards looms near, we are one step closer to unravelling the artiste who ultimately won the hearts of online voters across the island for Favourite Male Character, Favourite Female Character, Favourite Onscreen Couple, and Favourite Host. The results will be released during Show 1 on April 21.

In the running for Favourite Onscreen Couple for the second year in a row are Elvin Ng and Rui En (fondly known as ‘Ruivin’). The twosome, whose pairing in Code of Honour garnered them the award last year, charmed audiences again with their on-screen chemistry in Unriddle 2.

While Rui En may be faring well in that area, things aren’t looking as peachy in the Favourite Female Character category. After four weeks of leading the polls, she was knocked down to second place by newcomer Kimberly Chia, who continued to reign in the rankings for the next three weeks. Can her dedicated fans, RBKD, get her back into the top spot and help her score her third consecutive accolade, or will Kimberly take home her first trophy?

As with usual practice, we put on our thinking hats to analyse each category, and place our bets for Favourite Male Character, Favourite Female Character, Favourite Onscreen Couple and Favourite Host.

Who will emerge victorious? Well, it’s entirely up to you.

Powered by xinmsn, the winners of these online awards are determined entirely by the public’s online votes.

Voting is free-of-charge and is open to all Singaporeans and Singapore residents, with a valid NRIC number. Each voter is entitled to one vote per day, for each award category.

Favourite Female Character

We say: Rui En

The ever-popular Rui En has always been a strong contender in this category, and with good reason. Her versatility has enabled her to pull off all kinds of roles, from a spoilt brat in A Tale of 2 Cities, to a headstrong journalist in Poetic Justice, the role which garnered a nod for her in this category. Her strong, supportive fan base and impressive track record also make this prediction a no-brainer for us.

Dark horse: Kimberly Chia

If there’s one nominee who can break Rui En’s winning streak, it’s Kimberly Chia, who no doubt moved viewers with her portrayal of ill-stricken Deng Yilin in Don’t Stop Believin’. The young, doe-eyed actress took over her senior’s position in the fifth week of voting, and kept her ranking for three weeks straight. Could this be the beginning of the reign of a new TV screen queen?

Favourite Onscreen Couple

We say: Rui En & Elvin Ng

Could certified hot favourite RuiVin bag a third trophy together? We believe so. The in-demand duo have been owning the rankings since week one with their rollercoaster relationship in Unriddle 2, and they’ve already proved their popularity by winning the same title twice – once at last year’s show for Code of Honour, and another in 2010 for The Dream Catchers. The odds are definitely in their favour.

Dark horse: Rui En & Alien Huang

Latching on just as firmly to the number two spot for seven weeks is another Rui En pairing – this time, with Taiwanese star Alien Huang. The twosome, who play lovers in Joys of Life, and are the only real rivals of Ruivin – a pretty impressive feat, considering this is their first on-screen pairing.
