It’s time once again to see which celebs have risen above the ranks of their peers to secure an envied spot in the Top 20 (10 from each gender) Most Popular Male and Female Artistes. Will we see up-and-coming newcomers like Romeo Tan and Julie Tan appear alongside long-time hot favourites like Bryan Wong and Rui En? Only your votes have the power to decide.

In the past, results were based solely on telepoll results. But the game changed last year, when online voting was introduced. Now, the rankings are determined by a combination of 50% telepoll and 50% online votes. This potentially gives artistes with more tech-savvy supporters an edge over their counterparts who rely heavily on telepoll voting.

Should a tie occur on the night of the show itself (it is a very tight race this year), the final Top 20 will be decided based on results from a previous survey.

You’ve only got a few days left until the final list is announced, so we suggest getting all your friends and family together to help push your faves to the top. Then, remember to tune into Channel 8 on April 29 (Sunday) at 7pm to find out if your efforts paid off during the upcoming Star Awards 2013 ‘Show 2’.

In the meantime, check out our take on the Star Awards 2013 Top 20 Most Popular Artistes:

The Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes

Shoo- ins: Jeanette Aw, Rebecca Lim, Rui En, Yvonne Lim, Vivian Lai

It doesn’t take a psychic to predict that these leading ladies will emerge victorious when the results are announced on Sunday. Not only have they maintained rock solid positions in the Top 10 week in and week out, they’ve constantly proved their popularity with their past wins.

The well-liked Jeanette will receive an additional boost in the polls thanks to her likable roles in shows like Jump! and Rescue 995. The vivacious Vivian, as usual, never fails to charm viewers with her infectious hosting style, and has tons of high-exposure endorsement deals to back her up. Both artistes are just two trophies away from the coveted All-Time Favourite Artiste award, with eight wins each. As for Rui En… well, there’s no need to further emphasise on her soaring popularity and super supportive fan club, is there?

Every April, we dig deep into the recesses of our memories and scrutinise 2012’s TV dramas and variety shows to arrive at a consensus on who we think should take home top accolades at the annual Star Awards ceremony. Based on a variety of reasons – that range from emotional performances to the role’s depth – coupled with rounds of analytics arguments, we’ve arrived at a possible list of actors who may walk away victorious this Sunday.

Read on for our take on this year’s Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Variety Show Host, Best Info-Ed Programme Host and Best Newcomer award.

Best Actress nominees: Cynthia Koh (Show Hand), Joanne Peh (Pillow Talk), Kym Ng (It Takes Two), Rebecca Lim (Unriddle 2), Rui En (Unriddle 2)

We say: Cynthia Koh
This was a tough decision to make and the team was torn between Cynthia Koh’s realistic performance and Rebecca Lim’s riveting one. Both were good in their own ways but we eventually decided – after studying trends based on past years’ winners – that Cynthia is in a better position for winning top honours this weekend.

Kudos to Cynthia for her believable portrayal as a troubled and longsuffering gambling addict’s wife – and for going on TV with a bare face. No stranger to this award category, having previously nailed her first win in 1999 for Stepping Out (she was also nominated in 1996 for Tofu Street), Cynthia’s a method actress who never fails to live up to expectations.

While this may not be her first housewife role, it’s her best so far – thanks to her character’s sob story background and the premises’ unpredictable twist. First she’s a forsaken wife who chops her finger off to repay her husband’s gambling debts, then a helpless mother who has to deal with two rebellious teens, and before you know it, she’s a gambling addict in-the-making. And if this character transformation doesn’t warrant a Best Actress win, we don’t know what will.

Dark horse: Rebecca Lim and Kym Ng
Rebecca has enjoyed a relatively good year overall with her screen presence on the rise on TV and online – a trend that will continue well into the year.

Out of three major TV roles in 2012, her most unforgettable performance has to be as Gao Zhi Jie, a psychopathic doctor in Unriddle 2. Rebecca stepped out of her usual girl-next-door roles to embrace her dark side in the thriller series and – surprise, surprise! – we never knew she had it in her to play such a badass creep.

Kym Ng may play a seemingly ordinary housewife-hawker character in It Takes Two, but the actress took to her role like a fish to water. As a repressed Luo Na, it’s not hard to see how the actress managed to connect with TV audience through her natural and performance.

It’s been a heartbreaking weekend, what with news of veteran MediaCorp actor Huang Wenyong’s sudden passing making waves across the island. The sobering mood certainly infiltrated the usually jolly, glitzy Star Awards ‘Show 1’ on Sunday – artistes had trouble holding back tears as they recalled fond anecdotes of their beloved colleague.

Fans were definitely impacted as well, and immediately took action to get Wenyong back into the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes. Their votes paid off – after a brief disappearance last week, Wenyong is now back in the rankings (as of 22 April, 2pm), where we believe his name will remain until the final results are announced during ‘Show 2’ this weekend.

As for the ladies, week four saw the return of Joanne Peh and Quan Yi Fong, while Zhou Ying bid ‘sayonara’ to her spot. Most of the other female artistes on the list have been strong contenders since the beginning. Jeanette Aw, Pan Ling Ling, Rebecca Lim, Rui En, Vivian Lai and Yvonne Lim have been in the rankings since week one, while Belinda Lee and Ann Kok have held on tight since week two. Kym Ng entered the Top 10 last week, and is proving that she’s here to stay.

“他私下就像我的 Father Figure,他很照顾新人是真心提携后辈的。”

— Rui En on late 文永大哥

Dear fans

Shall we, in our own way, pay tribute to 文永大哥, our well-deserving veteran?

We all know that the show continues no matter what in Showbiz. So Star Awards show 2 is taking place this Sunday, and voting for Top 10 continues.

According to the rules of the system, we can each vote for 1 male & 1 female artiste daily.

As a mark of respect, while we cast our vote for Top 10 Female Artistes to Rui En, shall we also cast our vote for Top 10 Male Artistes to 文永大哥?

Just a small gesture, to show that he will be missed.

The sudden news of Huang Wenyong’s death stunned artists at Caldecott Hill.

Actress Rui En, 32, was on her way to a filming venue when she received the news. With a sigh, she said: “When I reached the filming location, the mood was really heavy and some people were already crying.”

It’s that magical time of year again: where local artistes get dressed to the nines, while we get to judge their efforts. While this year’s atmosphere was noticeably more sombre than in previous years, due to Huang Wenyong’s untimely passing a day earlier, the stars still dressed as if the night had its usual celebratory quality.

Rui En

Rui En looked like a goddess in her red Dior gown, which makes her long frame look positively statuesque. While she felt that red was a little inappropriate for the somber occasion, the dress’s elegance and conservative cut keep it from being too flamboyant. Earrings, bracelets, and a diamond ring from Tiffany & Co. add a subtle sparkle to her ensemble.

Verdict: HOT

On screen, he was their father, teacher and husband. Off it, he was a father figure, mentor and friend.

With the death of a legend, last night’s Star Awards Show 1 had a somewhat sombre feel to it.

Rui En, who repeated the Favourite On-screen Couple award with Elvin Ng from last year, said she initially wanted to change out of her red Dior dress as a mark of respect for Huang.

Huang had played her father on Honour and Passion, and they played neighbours on his second last drama, Joys of Life (2012).

“But my stylist said it was too last-minute, so I added a blazer to improvise,” said the 32-year-old actress.

She said Huang always knew where to find good food, no matter where the location was.

Winning in red: Rui En took home prizes for favourite female character, as well as best on-screen couple with Elvin Ng.

Rui En said it was too last-minute for her to change out of her red Dior dress as a mark of respect for Huang Wenyong, so she improvised by putting on a blazer.
