Less is more – that was the approach taken by Singapore’s MediaCorp stars Tay Ping Hui, Chen Liping, Elvin Ng and Rebecca Lim, when they were in Kuala Lumpur recently, along with Malaysian actor Wee Kheng Ming, to promote their drama series Unriddle 2.

Viewers in Singapore knew the twists of the show, however, as the 20-episode drama was shown there in March. It will be aired here on Ntv7 starting today.

Here’s the skinny on the show: It is a follow-up to the popular 2010 crime thriller series starring Chen and fellow MediaCorp actress Rui En as an unlikely duo who team up to unravel a string of mysterious cases.

For the sequel, Rui En, Chen and Tay reprise their roles as CID officer Hu Xiao Man, informer Lin Zheng Yi (nicknamed Da Bao) and Xiao Man’s boss Zhang Yu Ze respectively.

It’s not easy for Tay filming the death scene.

“My character dies very tragically. It was such an emotional scene and this woman here,” he said, pointing at his affable co-star Chen, and continued: “She started laughing and she just went on and on!

“You know she has an infectious laugh, right? So Rui En also started laughing, too. I was lying there and it got to an extent that I was like ‘I don’t want to die already!’,” said Tay with mock frustration, with Chen, 46, laughing loudly by his side.

They sounded cheerful when they recalled the episode, but the shooting process was anything but. Due to the dark tone and heavy subject matters, Rui En was said to have been depressed at one point struggling to get out of her character.

It’s not just the main characters that would make viewers hold on to their seats. Newcomers to the series, namely Rebecca Lim and Elvin Ng, also made an impression.

In what she described as her most challenging role in a Chinese drama series, Lim plays Xiao Man’s junior in the university, a psychiatrist who plays a pivotal role in advancing the plot.

Different from his usual boy-next-door roles, Ng, 31, starts appearing in the eighth episode as Xiao Man’s colleague, a cocky cop who is nicknamed Lang (wolf).

Like other characters, he’s walking the fine line between good and evil, said Ng.

“He seems to have a love-hate relationship with Xiao Man. You’ll never find out his true agendas until the very end. It’s intriguing to watch,” said the actor.

Notes on a scandal!

The recent underage prostitution sex scandal that rocked our nation got us thinking: Is engaging a hooker any different from having a meaningless fling? We conducted a poll with 21 TV stars and their reactions are surprising, especially Jeanette Aw’s.

“One-night stands are irresponsible”

RUI EN “Females tend to be a little bit more emotional so there’s a propensity for them to get hurt after a one-night stand. For men, it’s just physical. So, in a warped way, prostitution is less damning – you’re not hurting anyone.”

Lass Action Hero

Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the only sweetheart roughening up her image to show off her alpha side.

Rui En, 31

Lassy! > She was the sub-zero ice princess who impressed us with her dramatic chops, playing emotionally vulnerable characters like a wan Aids patient in By My Side and a grieving widow connected with her dead husband’s spirit in With You.

Sassy! > She was the sub zero ice princess who did all her martial arts stunt herself in Code of Honour, but she really earned her action stripes with her portrayal as a tough-nut copper in Unriddle (and the sequel Unriddle 2). The latter saw her engaging in some serious – and convincing – mano-a-mano blows with her co-stars. How is she going to top that in Unriddle 3?

Is there a need for Unriddle 3?

First and foremost, the main reason for me to be hooked on Unriddle is because of Rui En. However as I was watching the two dramas, I realized that Unriddle is not just a typical police action drama. In fact, we can see the effort of the whole Unriddle production team trying to deviate from the norm by creating a police thriller story that arouses viewers’ emotions and provoked them to think and speculate.

Unriddle 1 placed more emphasis on how Hu Xiaoman and her mole partner, Dabao, solved the various crime cases. But it clearly lacked the depiction of the characters’ inner emotions as well as the human nature’s potential to err. Overall, it was kind of too still and drying in terms of the characters’ sentiments and portrayal.

On the contrary, Unriddle 2 placed more emphasis on the emotions of the three main characters (Hu Xiaoman, Dabao and Zhang Yuze). Hence it was quite obvious that there were less crime cases to focus on but rather the focus was more on how the various cases actually revolved around the characters’ own lives. A darker and more intense theme was incorporated into the sequel after the scriptwriters look into the viewers’ feedbacks and comments after Unriddle 1. What’s commendable is that, the sequel daringly addressed the imperfection of the police which led them to choose to be on the side of immorality when left with no choice.

Both Unriddle 1 and Unriddle 2 concluded with open-endings. It is understandable that such endings perfectly fits the setting of the drama. However it resulted in controversies as to why there were no definite answers and explanations. I personally feel that if there is going to be Unriddle 3, the ending of Unriddle 2 would be a good one to allow the story to further develop on. Hu Xiaoman may no longer be a cop anymore. So in a way, it is still possible for Unriddle 3’s storyline to be refreshing and not too repetitive by heading towards a different direction in terms of the fate of Xiaoman and Dabao. I would say there is really no harm giving the go-ahead for the production of Unriddle 3. Perhaps changing the title of the drama might be helpful in mitigating the lethargic state of those whom might already have lost interest in Unriddle. On the other hand, if Mediacorp really has no intention to produce Unriddle 3, I think that Unriddle 1 and 2 should have swopped their endings as the ending of Unriddle 1 actually offered lesser feasibility for a sequel and left us with lesser question marks as compared to the ending of Unriddle 2 which left many questions unanswered.

Whatever the outcome may be, I am neutral in my stand on whether to have Unriddle 3 or not. My final words are that I am sincerely grateful that Unriddle 1 and 2 had been showcased on the local TV screen and I am deeply satisfied with the Unriddle production. It was truly one of a kind of drama we hardly see locally.

Plots involving surgeons, policemen and lovers provide twists aplenty in this week’s crop of serials.

By Foong Woei Wan

Playing it safe is the one thing you can’t accuse Channel 8 police drama Unriddle 2 of.

Would you attempt a psychodrama about a policewoman (Rui En) going off the rails, knowing it could be a tortured mess?

Would you kill off your stronger actors (Tay Ping Hui, as a twitching detective with a brain ailment, and Desmond Shen, as a scar-faced criminal) and leave your viewers at the mercy of a weaker actor (Elvin Ng, as a lollipop-sucking police whiz-kid?)

Would you risk your actors’ dignity in an amateurish shoot-out scene, knowing they could look like they all have two left hands and two left feet?

MediaCorp does all of the above, and it sure seems to like living dangerously. It isn’t entirely inept though.

In its first season, the series packed an emotional punch whenever it placed its every-woman (Chen Liping, as a reluctant informant of Rui En’s) in peril.

In its second season, it drags her adopted family members into trouble too and puts her in the painful position of deciding whom to save.
