本地演艺圈刮起一阵改名风潮，你是不是也被艺人们的新旧名字搞得有点乱了呢？

事实上，艺人改名已不是什么新鲜事。有些艺人为了增加人气这么做，有些为了健康，也有些纯粹觉得新艺名更好听、更亲切。

不过，改名是否真的就能够改运吗？

xinmsn盘点改过名字的本地艺人，有谁改名后演艺表现突飞猛进，又有谁星途始终不见起色？

瑞恩2002年出道时，公司替她取了艺名芮恩。她曾以芮恩之名发行了一张同名专辑，但在乐坛表现平平，之后却在本地电视圈闯出一片天。其冰冷公主的鲜明形象，让她在一众公主花旦中出位。

2008年，累积了一定演技与人气的她，宣布改用自己的本名瑞恩，并再度发行中文专辑。

瑞恩当时表示，一直以来自己好像穿着不合身的外套，这次改用本名，有着将最真实的瑞恩呈现在观众与粉丝面前的意义。

xinmsn 讲评：

有趣的是，瑞恩的运势似乎随着改名，有了明显的进步。2011年，她凭《我在你左右》夺得“最佳女主角”；2年后，再度以《最火搭档II》拿下此奖。

同时，瑞恩的粉丝团“瑞不可当”也是本地粉丝俱乐部当中规模最庞大的之一，举凡任何投票有关活动，粉丝都会铆足全力为偶像投票，瑞恩也几乎每每都榜上有名！

It comes as a surprise when actress Rui En says some of her favourite bags are brand-less canvas totes, and that she used to be a tomboy who hated dresses.

After all, the 32-year-old was dressed in a flattering and slinky Grecian-style toga dress for this interview and photoshoot.

And who can forget the beautiful plum Christian Dior tulle gown she wore at the Star Awards show in April, where she won her second Best Actress award. She also won that night for Favourite Female Character and Top 10 Most Popular Artistes.

“It was an Academy Awards-ready gown, I chose it just three weeks before the event, and I looked forward to wearing it.”

“It was ‘princessy’ but the dark colour made it classic and ‘me’.”

She admits she could have handled the dress more elegantly that night. She had seemed exasperated at times when she had difficulty moving about in the gown.

“It was lightweight but there were so many layers of fabric and I was kind of wrestling with it,” she says.

“But I promise I will get better at this.”

This disarming honesty and lack of pretension, on top of her pretty girl-next-door looks and acting chops, have won Rui En fans, as well as the attention of marketers.

In May, she was named one of the faces of the L’Oreal Paris Youth Code skincare range. She joins a roll call of A-list international celebrities, such as Gong Li, Li Bingbing and Fan Bingbing, who also front the range of skincare.

The ambassadorship is apt as Rui En is a self-professed beauty junkie. She loves trying new skincare products and make-up and uses a different mask every night on her dry and intolerant skin.

To keep healthy and give her face that extra glow, she works out religiously with home videos. And every morning, she downs green detox drinks made from recipes she found on the Internet.

Rui En started her career in show business when she was 20. But the industry started to take serious notice of her only in 2011 when she won her first Best Actress trophy at the Star Awards that year for her role as a widow in the drama serial With You.

Rui En says the nomination in 2011 made her pay more attention to her clothes.

“It was the first time I had to dress up properly for an event and I had so many choices. I felt very lucky but confused too.”

“My sense of style was not set then, so it was just a whirlwind of trying on all sorts of outfits and just seeing what worked for my image.”

In the end, she picked a steel grey Hermes pantsuit, with a black belt tied stylishly and provocatively around her neck.

These days, she knows instinctively what she likes: “Nothing revealing, but classic, simple, clean and accessorised with diamonds.”

7 things in her bag

1. Soul by Ludacris headphones

This was a Christmas present I received last year. Its sound quality is good and it blocks out noise. I love music, and listen to everything from country to K-pop. When I’m travelling, I’ll plug into this and be in my own world.

2. Museli bars

I eat these when I am shooting and have to be constantly on the go. They are quite sweet and taste good, and they keep me from bingeing on the unhealthy stuff.

3. L’Oreal Youth Code prodigious rejuvenating pre-essence

I apply this essence on my bare skin and it helps everything else that I use later, such as serums and moisturisers, to be more easily absorbed.

4. Insect Repellent

This is an insect repellent soldiers use; I bought it from the army market in Beach Road. It is a must whenever I’m filming outdoors. It does not smell but is so potent that it is not safe to be applied on the skin. I apply it on the hem of my clothing instead and the mosquitoes do not come near me.

5. Memoirs of a radical lawyer by Michael Mansfield

I’m currently reading this for research purposes as I play a lawyer in the upcoming Chinese legal drama Sudden. Whenever I take on a new role, I will read about the character’s occupation as it helps me with my acting.

6. Creative electronic chinese dictionary

A friend gave this to me as a birthday present two or three years ago. It tells me how to pronounce Chinese words I’m unfamiliar with and their meanings.

7. Scripts

I feel naked without my scripts. This is for Sudden, which I am currently working on and which airs in September on MediaCorp Channel 8. I prefer physical copies because I can make notes in the margin.

Her bag

A fan gave this to me. I own about 20 to 30 canvas tote bags. I carry them around when I am filming or not working. For designer bags, my favourite is the Balenciaga Motorcycle bag because it is very versatile.

Rui En – Girly, Really?

Think about Rui En, and tough, no-nonsense, even (dare we say it?) cold, comes to mind. But girly and vain?
Rui En is a Mediacorp darling (albeit an unconventional one), there’s no question about it. Dubbed the ‘Queen of ratings’, her shows have consistently been one of the most-watched dramas of the year. And of course, her power-packed performances didn’t go unnoticed as she won the highly-coveted best actress award in 2011 and most recently, in 2013. The cherry on top of her great year? L‘Oreal has chosen her to be the face of their latest L’Oreal Youth Code Essence, an essence with the ability to restore skin’s optimal capability, so that it can better absorb the effects of your skincare, boosting its efficacy. Rui En tells us all abut her girliness (yes, she does have a girly side), beauty secrets and her lifestyle.

Cosmo: Congrats on being the new face of L’Oreal Youth Code! Are you really excited about this?

Rui En: It’s been a long time since I’ve done a skincare endorsement and I’m actually really pleased about this. L’Oreal has always had this this tagline for ages “Because you’re worth it” and when I was a little girl, I would see all these gorgeous girls reciting this line and think about how nice it is to be able to say those words. It is like a dream come true. Plus, I felt that [L’oreal] was really sincere. We had a couple of meetings and they wanted to get to know me better, which felt nice.

Cosmo: “Because you’re worth it”, what meaning does it have for you?

Rui En: The main thing about saying this tagline is that the people who were chosen to say it were international stars – huge stars for me. To be able to join their ranks, it’s a huge privilege. For me personally, the tagline feels empowering.

Cosmo: So what do you like most about this product that you’re endorsing?

Rui En: I love its light texture, but most of all, I like that it is afforable. I think a lot of women are willing to spend thousands of dollars on skincare because there is this promise that it’ll work. But this works just as well [as an expensive product].

Cosmo: Can you share a beauty secret with us?

Rui En: I know that a lot of people think I’m very bochup*. But I’m actually a very girly person when it comes to skincare. I insist on putting on a mask when i get home, no matter what time it is.

Cosmo: Every single day?

Rui En: ya, everyday. Its probably not for everybody but I think it really helps to soothe my tired skin. Sometimes I’m out filming for days in a row, and my skin suffers, but this helps to refresh and calm it down.

Cosmo: Do you feel pressured to look good all the time because you are a celebrity?

Rui En: Actually, when I don’t work, I’m really don’t bother with makeup and I’m perpertually in t-shirt and shorts. There is no way I will let any makeup touch my face. This is also why I need to make sure that my skin looks great on its own. I mean, of course, when I’m working or going for Star Awards, it’s inevitable. It’s not that I don’t care about my appearance; I’m just way too lazy!

Cosmo: Do you do any sports to keep your skin glowing?

Rui En: I do loads of cardio. I do see a difference in my skin when I have time to work out. I try not to run because of the sun, so I gym and do indoor sports a lot. Everybody should exercise because I do see a radiant glow in my complexion when I do. Exercise is incredibly important to me.

In her Element

This may not be Rui En’s first cover for us, but it’s a particularly momentous one as it marks her crowning ELLE’s Actress of the Year for 2012.

Four years have passed since her last cover shoot with us and she’s come a long way in that time. Her infamous “ice queen” label aside, she’s also acquired a couple of other things – a crop of other awards and along with that, a whole load of acting cred. Ever the professional, the actress strikes each pose with the utmost concentration, then studies the photos on-screen to see what can be improved. Even while holding a pose in front of the camera, she checks herself by getting her assistant to capture and bring her the shot on her iPhone. Does the perfectionist in her ever let up?

Rui En – Actress of the Year

On a winning streak and landing role after plum role, ELLE Awards 2012 Actress of the Year Rui En has officially hit a new high in her career.

Rui En’s been extremely busy – not just with filming dramas back to back, but also successively racking up acting awards. After snagging her first Best Actress win at the 2011 Star Awards, she’s nabbed ELLE’s Actress of the Year for 2012, and hot on the heels of that, took yet another Best Actress honour from the Asian Television Awards 2012. Without a doubt, it’s been an exceptional two years for the actress, who’s also been enjoying plenty of screen time on Channel 8. And it looks set to continue through this year and beyond.

While she may not be bubbling with joy, our queen of cool asserts that she’s genuinely happy about the recognition, but is determined to remain grounded amid praise that her wins have generated.

How did you feel when you learnt about your win?
Rui En: I was pleasantly surprised and very happy. I don’t let myself have any expectations when I’m nominated, because I don’t like to base my sense of achievement on awards. But because of that, when I do get something, it’s a very nice surprise.

How do you assess your own acting?
Rui En: I watch myself [on screen] a lot. When I’m filming, I make it a point to watch and review the rushes after each day’s work. I’m actually my harshest critic and I set very high standards for myself. It’s never good enough for me but all I can do is try to keep getting better.

Let’s be honest — the local drama scene and its pool of actors are small. Do you ever feel limited by it?
Rui En: I try not to let my performance be affected by the people I’m acting with. Yes, the right person can give you the right chemistry, but it doesn’t always happen and you cannot expect it to. Your performance, in a way, has to stand on its own. I would love to have more opportunities to work with new people but unfortunately the circle is how it is. I guess it’s up to us to challenge ourselves.

Any plans to advance your acting career overseas?
Rui En: No, I don’t make plans like that. I’d rather let things happen when they’re supposed to. I don’t go thinking “Well, now I’ve made it here, I’m going to China.” If the opportunity comes, that’s great; if it doesn’t, that’s fine. The markets out there are a lot more complicated than a lot of us realise.

Under Cover: Rui En

According to NYLON’s DNA, we’re supposed to transform people – but how does one transform the resident ice queen of Caldecott Hill? We thought, let’s make her fiercer. Out came the spiked boots, studded stillettos and of course, makeup to match. Going in a completely opposite direction from her character in her new drama, “Joys of Life”, where she plays a domestically-inclined daughter of a low-income family, we gave her a dramatic, winged out cat-eye and piled on eyeshadow for depth. What we found odd was that, despite her rumoured frosty demeanor, she turned out to be an absolute joy to work with. We’re fans.

SINGAPOREAN drama series Unriddle was a hit and created waves in the republic. The series also received four nominations at the prestigious Star Awards 2011, including for best drama serial and best screenplay.

The addictive crime investigative drama series is back now with a darker and more sinister sequel. Unriddle 2, which premiered last Wednesday, is screened over ntv7 fom Monday to Thursday at 10pm.

The celebrated series traces the trials and tribulations of crime-fighting duo, Lin Zheng Yi (also known as Da Bao in the serial) and Hu Xiao Man, portrayed by Chen Li Ping and Rui En respectively.

Some members of the cast of Unriddle 2 were in Kuala Lumpur recently to promote the series.

Elvin Ng, who plays Rui En’s on-screen nemesis Xie Lang Feng (nicknamed Wolf), said the script is a narrative that transcends what’s right and wrong. The intricacy of the lessons each character presents is what makes Unriddle 2 such a hit among audience.

According to Chen, Unriddle 2 is much more intense than its prequel as there is more drama revolving around the characters from part one who also have to weather through unfortunate events.

Rui En, who worked closely with Chen because of the nature of their on-screen characters, nearly succumbed to the pressure. Chen, who is the more experienced actress, managed to help Rui En regain her footing.

One thing we learnt from the night’s proceedings at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 awards ceremony: When brought together, both Rui En and Elvin Ng’s fanclubs, RBKD and Elvinology, are a force to be reckoned with.

The two fanclubs made their presence known with their colourful fan paraphernalia and boisterous cheers for ‘Ruivin’ (a nickname coined to term Rui En’s onscreen coupling with Elvin), which could be heard both inside and outside the TV theatre. These fans’ consistent hard work in the online votes saw the two actors constantly top the online polls for their double nominations during xinmsn’s weekly updates, and their persistence paid off.

Apart from nabbing the Favourite On-Screen Couple award for their Song Yazai and Ou Kelu pairing in Code of Honour, both Rui En and Elvin Ng also walked away with the Favourite Character award in the male and female categories for their work in A Tale of 2 Cities (Zhang Yale) and C.L.I.F. (Teo Kwee Xiang) respectively.

In a backstage interview with xinmsn after the awards ceremony, the duo shared that they were “pleasantly surprised” at how the “alliance” formed between their fanclubs to help rally more votes for their nomination.

“This nickname (Ruivin) came out a long time ago so I’m already used to it. They probably followed in the footsteps of what is done in Hollywood and took a cue from ‘Bradgelina’ (laughs). Of course, we’re not on the same ranks as these stars but I find it really amusing,” said Rui En, who was decked in a white studded Versace dress.

Before the awards were handed out, a short Code of Honour spoof – to speak of Elvin and Rui En’s shaky working relationship – was put up by Dennis Chew and Quan Yifong during the award ceremony. The duo broke into laughter at the thought of it and Rui En reaffirmed their good working relationship with one another when she praised Elvin for understanding her working habits.

The 31-year-old said, “I’m a person of little words at work. What I admire about Elvin is that he respects my needs to have personal space at work.”

Commenting on the second spoof which was much-talked about and mimicked the infamous rape scene between her and Zhang Yaodong’s character in On The Fringe, the actress was cool about it and said that it was a form of “entertainment” with “entertainment value”.

Elvin, who is also the Systema Charming Smile award winner for the second year running, clarified that “most people mistake silence for enmity,” as Rui En chimed in agreement, “It’s because we get along well with and share good chemistry [which is why no words are needed].

To celebrate their wins, Elvin shared that Elvinology has already planned a surprise for him; Rui En intends to handover her Favourite Female Character trophy to RBKD to thank them for their endless support “because it belongs to them.”

RBKD shared a picture of the two trophies that Rui En gave. The blue trophy is from last year’s Favourite Female Character win while the purple trophy is from this year’s win.
