Less is more – that was the approach taken by Singapore’s MediaCorp stars Tay Ping Hui, Chen Liping, Elvin Ng and Rebecca Lim, when they were in Kuala Lumpur recently, along with Malaysian actor Wee Kheng Ming, to promote their drama series Unriddle 2.

Viewers in Singapore knew the twists of the show, however, as the 20-episode drama was shown there in March. It will be aired here on Ntv7 starting today.

Here’s the skinny on the show: It is a follow-up to the popular 2010 crime thriller series starring Chen and fellow MediaCorp actress Rui En as an unlikely duo who team up to unravel a string of mysterious cases.

For the sequel, Rui En, Chen and Tay reprise their roles as CID officer Hu Xiao Man, informer Lin Zheng Yi (nicknamed Da Bao) and Xiao Man’s boss Zhang Yu Ze respectively.

It’s not easy for Tay filming the death scene.

“My character dies very tragically. It was such an emotional scene and this woman here,” he said, pointing at his affable co-star Chen, and continued: “She started laughing and she just went on and on!

“You know she has an infectious laugh, right? So Rui En also started laughing, too. I was lying there and it got to an extent that I was like ‘I don’t want to die already!’,” said Tay with mock frustration, with Chen, 46, laughing loudly by his side.

They sounded cheerful when they recalled the episode, but the shooting process was anything but. Due to the dark tone and heavy subject matters, Rui En was said to have been depressed at one point struggling to get out of her character.

It’s not just the main characters that would make viewers hold on to their seats. Newcomers to the series, namely Rebecca Lim and Elvin Ng, also made an impression.

In what she described as her most challenging role in a Chinese drama series, Lim plays Xiao Man’s junior in the university, a psychiatrist who plays a pivotal role in advancing the plot.

Different from his usual boy-next-door roles, Ng, 31, starts appearing in the eighth episode as Xiao Man’s colleague, a cocky cop who is nicknamed Lang (wolf).

Like other characters, he’s walking the fine line between good and evil, said Ng.

“He seems to have a love-hate relationship with Xiao Man. You’ll never find out his true agendas until the very end. It’s intriguing to watch,” said the actor.

Star Awards 2012 8 Burning Questions

Were the Top 10 results skewed by the change in the voting system this year? Now the star(dust) has settled for Star Awards 2012, we seek answers to right burning questions.

3. Only MediaCorp artistes are eligible for the Top 10 Most Popular awards. What does it mean for the likes of Christopher Lee, Michelle Chong and Michelle Chia, who were recently in the news for changes to their contract?

Chris, Fann and Qi Yuwu have all signed deals with foreign agencies but they remain MediaCorp artistes. “We give them time and flexibility to work with overseas agents. At the same time, they commit to certain amount of hours in our productions,” says Ivy. Similarly, artistes like Rui En and Jeanette Aw (managed by Artiste Networks), Pornsak and Lee Teng (managed by Left Profile) remain MediaCorp artistes and are eligible. Michelle Chong, who isn’t renewing her MediaCorp contract, won’t be eligible for Star Awards 2013. On the other hand, Michelle Chia will be, as she’s decided to renew her contract.

It could be the epic storylines, the lyrical dialogue or the promise of grand spectacle in the sets and costumes. Whatever the reason, Asian period dramas have always garnered a strong and steady following.

Life! puts together a list of period dramas that TV buffs should keep a lookout for.

Joys of Life

When: Premieres on Channel 8 on June 26 at 9pm

What: Taiwanese actor Alien Huang (with actress Rui En) is in the lead as Zhao Mingxing, a young man who dreams of becoming a movie star, in this local drama set in 1950s Singapore. Sharing the same house with his family are a number of characters, including a Japanese Occupation survivor (Chew Chor Ming), a womanising wook (Huang Wenyong) and a beautiful woman (Cynthia Wang) who is intent on marrying a foreigner.

Why you would watch it: To see how the ebullient Alien Huang will play out against local actors on home-grown TV, following his role in local flick Already Famous (2011). The show also promises to be a fun trip down memory lane for most Singaporeans, given the retro 1950s outfits and old kampung atmosphere of the setting.

Notes on a scandal!

The recent underage prostitution sex scandal that rocked our nation got us thinking: Is engaging a hooker any different from having a meaningless fling? We conducted a poll with 21 TV stars and their reactions are surprising, especially Jeanette Aw’s.

“One-night stands are irresponsible”

RUI EN “Females tend to be a little bit more emotional so there’s a propensity for them to get hurt after a one-night stand. For men, it’s just physical. So, in a warped way, prostitution is less damning – you’re not hurting anyone.”

Lass Action Hero

Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the only sweetheart roughening up her image to show off her alpha side.

Rui En, 31

Lassy! > She was the sub-zero ice princess who impressed us with her dramatic chops, playing emotionally vulnerable characters like a wan Aids patient in By My Side and a grieving widow connected with her dead husband’s spirit in With You.

Sassy! > She was the sub zero ice princess who did all her martial arts stunt herself in Code of Honour, but she really earned her action stripes with her portrayal as a tough-nut copper in Unriddle (and the sequel Unriddle 2). The latter saw her engaging in some serious – and convincing – mano-a-mano blows with her co-stars. How is she going to top that in Unriddle 3?
