Skit-zophrenia!
Star Awards Show 1
Thanks to one madcap, no-holds-barred skit, nobody, especially the lampooned stars, will forget this year’s Star Awards Show 1 anytime soon.
Who says we can’t laugh at ourselves? Yes, the three-hour-long Star Awards Show 1 was, for the most part, a nostalgic trip down memory lane – say “long time no see!” to past Ch 8 icons like Chen Xiuhuan, Zhang Wanling and Huang Biren. But it was a 15-minute skit lampooning the most memorable dramas of 2011 – on screen and off – that gave the show humour and lotsa bite. Starring Quan Yifeng, Dennis Chew, Vivian Lai, Guo Liang and Lee Teng, the skit is best described as the mutant child between the Oscars’ opening montage and Ricky Gervais’ Golden Globes monologue. Only meaner. Spoofing Devotion, Code of Honour and A Song to Remember, no topic – from Zoe Tay’s wrinkles to Rui En’s feud with On the Fringe co-star Zhang Yaodong, to the questionable acting of the very stars the awards were celebrating – was off limits.
Awkward, much? This year’s Favourite Onscreen Couple may lack chemistry – their awkward acceptance speech ended with two seconds of dead air on live TV – but at least Rui En and Elvin Ng (aka RuiVin) have fans who believe they’re great together.
Freeze Frame!

We knew we’d catch Tay Ping Hui smirking at Rui En and Elvin Ng’s awkward speech. “I always have that look on my face lah,” says TPH.
Scandalous! Ann Kok’s reaction to the lampooning of Rui En and Zhang Yaodong’s feud says everything.

The INS and OUTS of Star Awards 2012
We have all the thrills, spills, and the most surprising Top 10 Most Popular lists ever.
And if the talent segment is the winners’ speeches, points must be given Qi Yuwu, who made it on stage for his Top 10 award bearing the scars from his car accident. Then there was the engaging Rui En, who took a cute dig at everyone for panning her too cool-for-school attitude by showing us what she looked like when she’s really ticked off.

SPANX YOU VERY MUCH? You’d think that to get into this form-fitting dress that hugs the body like a second skin, Rui En must’ve survived on a diet of water and air for days. Nope. This cool cat who swished around in the Dsquared2 slinky number, five-inch Jimmy Choos and Cartier bling tells us: “I just had a plate of chicken rice in the hotel room before this.” Yes, you can start hating her now.

At the Star Awards on Sunday night at Marina Bay Sands, Best Actress winner Joanne Peh did an imitation of Angelina Jolie’s protruding leg stunt at the Oscars earlier this year.
Other MediaCorp artistes, such as Constance Song, let other body bits protrude – the less said, the better.
It was not all hot messes, though, at the awards ceremony honouring the best in local Chinese TV programming.
There were those who, wisely, kept it simple, such as Rui En.
Rui En sleek in her Dsquared2 toga gown paired with Cartier jewellery and her icy demeanour. Asked about her style, she says coolly that it is a “conservative” option.

Rui En at the Star Awards 2012 Show 2 post-show party.
She had a look on her face that threatened to turn water into ice, when she began her acceptance speech for winning a Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award on Sunday.
Was Singapore actress Rui En upset about winning?
It turned out to be all a huge joke.
“That was my true ‘black face’.
“This is me smiling. I hope people won’t mix up the two anymore,” said Rui En, as her stern expression dissolved into a warm smile moments later.
The actress explained during the post-show party that she came up with that rather unusual acceptance speech on a lark.
“I am not somebody who jokes around a lot, so I thought it would be nice and refreshing to joke about myself,” said Rui En.
“It’s basically to tell people to cut me some slack.”
To understand the joke, you’d have to look back a few days to the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 last Sunday.
After the awards, some media outlets had claimed she had been unhappy about the skits performed by Dennis Chew, Quan Yi Feng and a few other stars, which poked fun at her.
But Rui En expressed that these media outlets had blown the whole issue out of proportion.
“Actually I was fine with it (the skits).
“They (the media outlets involved) just took a picture [of me] when I wasn’t smiling, used that and just put the headline that I wasn’t happy about the jokes,” explained Rui En, with a look of resignation on her face.
However, there was no possibility of history repeating itself during the Star Awards 2012 Show 2 post-show party – Rui En was all smiles throughout the event, and gamely posed for photos with the guests.
“I feel it (winning the award) is great! I am grateful to my fans,” said Rui En happily.
Unfortunately for the actress, she will have no time to celebrate her win.
Rui En revealed that she will be busy working on the massive Channel 8 Mandarin drama “Joys of Life” alongside Taiwan star Alien Huang for the next few weeks, though the good news is she will get a well-deserved two-week break after shooting wraps in mid-May.

It wasn’t the usual suspects who revealed their, er, talents last night.
Constance Song, Ng Hui, Chen Liping and Xiang Yun turned up the heat at the Star Awards 2012 Show 2 held at Marina Bay Sands.
Song’s sheer, peekaboo Jiki outfit titillated, while Ng revealed plenty of cleavage and legs in her sexy black dress.
In comparison, the usual bevy of babes such as Michelle Chia, Rebecca Lim and Rui En were rather modestly decked out from head-to-toe.
Said Rui En: “I’m not into showing cleavage as I’m conservative and I don’t feel the need to.
“The limit is showing off my shoulders. I won’t reveal my legs too.”
