Singapore actress Rui En and actor Elvin Ng won the Favourite Onscreen Couple award at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 on Sunday, which recognizes the top talents both in front of, and behind the camera in local Mandarin television.
The pair, who played lovers in the Mandarin drama “Code of Honour”, attributed their win to their fan clubs, which had worked together to garner votes in order to make sure ‘Ruivin’ – a term their fans coined to describe their onscreen pairing – won the award.
“I never thought there’d be alliances in the entertainment industry,” Ng joked, backstage after the ceremony.
“I feel quite safe with the support of Elvin’s fans,” said Rui En with a smile, adding that she intends to give the trophy to their fans.
“I feel this belongs to them!”
Rui En and Ng also won the awards for Favourite Female Character (for Rui En’s portrayal of a spoilt rich girl in “A Tale Of Two Cities”) and Favourite Male Character (for Ng’s portrayal of a dashing police officer in “C.L.I.F”) respectively.

THE hilarious skit at Star Awards Show 1 on Sunday night was meant to be a comic relief for all, but two of the actors being made fun of did not seem impressed.
Last night’s Star Awards Show 1, telecast live over Channel 8, featured a skit spoofing the cast of local dramas Devotion, A Song to Remember and Code of Honour.
Not even the biggest and most popular names on Caldecott Hill were spared.
Zoe Tay, Chen Hanwei, Joanne Peh, Elvin Ng, Qi Yuwu and Eelyn Kok were all made fun of.
But Rui En and Zhang Yaodong did not appear amused.
Rui En looked moody for the rest of the night, despite winning Favourite Female Character and Favourite Onscreen Couple with Ng.
In her acceptance speech, she said cryptically: “We are here to film (dramas), not create news.â€
In the skit, TV host Quan Yifeng – in an impressive career comeback since her scuffle with a taxi driver – pretended to be Rui En and objected to filming a rape scene.
It was an obvious throwback to the controversy between Rui En and Zhang Yaodong last August.
Back then, Zhang had talked to the media about a rape scene he did with Rui En in the drama On the Fringe.
Rui En, who was working in Malaysia then, immediately wrote a heated blog post, stressing the fact that she is against doing kissing and rape scenes.
That particular scene was in fact a failed rape attempt, she clarified.
She also hinted that Zhang had twisted the truth to try to make headlines and stay in the limelight.
Zhang subsequently told the media he had used the wrong words, adding that he is not a Chinese teacher who is precise about words.
Last night, when reporters asked Rui En if she was offended, she replied with a curt “No”.
Funny skit?
“The skit provided entertainment value. I was prepared that (the controversy with Zhang) would be mentioned either in Star Awards Show 1 or Show 2,” she said.
When The New Paper spoke to Zhang, he too was curt.
“I don’t think the skit went overboard. It was very funny. I’m okay with it because I don’t think too much into it,” he said.
Ironically, the two of them are filming the period drama Joys of Life and have many scenes together.
How are relations between the two of them now?
Zhang replied in Mandarin: “We are not familiar with each other (before the controversy). Now we are even less familiar. We are still colleagues.”
When asked the same question, Rui En said: “Things are professional (between us). We are just doing our jobs.
“There’s nothing different and it’s just the way I behave with everyone else.
“To me, (the incident) is over. I think I’ll work with him again (in the future), and why make things difficult for everyone?”

One thing we learnt from the night’s proceedings at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 awards ceremony: When brought together, both Rui En and Elvin Ng’s fanclubs, RBKD and Elvinology, are a force to be reckoned with.
The two fanclubs made their presence known with their colourful fan paraphernalia and boisterous cheers for ‘Ruivin’ (a nickname coined to term Rui En’s onscreen coupling with Elvin), which could be heard both inside and outside the TV theatre. These fans’ consistent hard work in the online votes saw the two actors constantly top the online polls for their double nominations during xinmsn’s weekly updates, and their persistence paid off.
Apart from nabbing the Favourite On-Screen Couple award for their Song Yazai and Ou Kelu pairing in Code of Honour, both Rui En and Elvin Ng also walked away with the Favourite Character award in the male and female categories for their work in A Tale of 2 Cities (Zhang Yale) and C.L.I.F. (Teo Kwee Xiang) respectively.
In a backstage interview with xinmsn after the awards ceremony, the duo shared that they were “pleasantly surprised” at how the “alliance” formed between their fanclubs to help rally more votes for their nomination.
“This nickname (Ruivin) came out a long time ago so I’m already used to it. They probably followed in the footsteps of what is done in Hollywood and took a cue from ‘Bradgelina’ (laughs). Of course, we’re not on the same ranks as these stars but I find it really amusing,” said Rui En, who was decked in a white studded Versace dress.
Before the awards were handed out, a short Code of Honour spoof – to speak of Elvin and Rui En’s shaky working relationship – was put up by Dennis Chew and Quan Yifong during the award ceremony. The duo broke into laughter at the thought of it and Rui En reaffirmed their good working relationship with one another when she praised Elvin for understanding her working habits.
The 31-year-old said, “I’m a person of little words at work. What I admire about Elvin is that he respects my needs to have personal space at work.”
Commenting on the second spoof which was much-talked about and mimicked the infamous rape scene between her and Zhang Yaodong’s character in On The Fringe, the actress was cool about it and said that it was a form of “entertainment” with “entertainment value”.
Elvin, who is also the Systema Charming Smile award winner for the second year running, clarified that “most people mistake silence for enmity,” as Rui En chimed in agreement, “It’s because we get along well with and share good chemistry [which is why no words are needed].
To celebrate their wins, Elvin shared that Elvinology has already planned a surprise for him; Rui En intends to handover her Favourite Female Character trophy to RBKD to thank them for their endless support “because it belongs to them.”
RBKD shared a picture of the two trophies that Rui En gave. The blue trophy is from last year’s Favourite Female Character win while the purple trophy is from this year’s win.

While Joanne Peh and Rui En have flashier roles, Zoe Tay, who was so graceful and subtle as a long-suffering mother of five in Devotion, has the emotional heft. Hopefully, that’s makes the difference and she’ll be rewarded with her first Best Actress win in 16 years.

You’ve been in Singapore for the past few months filming your first Ch 8 drama, Joys of Life. Do you hang out with the cast outside of work?
Rui En has her own plans after work every day. She really treasures her personal space and privacy. Once work ends, she takes off very quickly. There were a couple of times I wanted to ask her to join us, but she disappeared even before I changed out of my outfit. Maybe next time.

In the first of our three-part Star Award winners’ prediction, we give you an insight on who we think will bring home the trophies at the upcoming Star Awards 2012 Show 1
Text: xinmsn team
After close to seven weeks of fervent voting from fans, we are finally reaching the final leg of the upcoming Star Awards 2012 online polls for categories such as Favourite Female and Male Character, Favourite On-Screen Couple award, Favourite Variety Host, and the Systema Charming Smile award.
Before the winners are unveiled at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 this Sunday, the golden question remains: will the hot favourite pairing of RuiVin (Rui En and Elvin) from Code of Honour take the top spot or will Christopher Lee and Jesseca Liu’s chemistry in medical drama, The Oath, win them the honours?
Following our last update on the online polls, we saw Rui En shooting back to the top spot after Jesseca broke her leading streak in the Favourite Female Character two weeks ago. Will Jesseca eventually bring home the coveted trophy or will it fall back into the arms of Rui En, who has topped the category for six weeks?
Sticking by traditions, in the first of a three-part series, we take time off to study the odds and make our guesses for the Favourite Male and Female Characters, Favourite On-screen Couple (Drama), and the Favourite Variety Host award.
Who will eventually win the online awards? With one day left before the polls close tomorrow, it’s best to make the most out of your precious vote and make the last one count – you have till 8.30pm tomorrow.
Favourite Female Character
The stars say…
It’s gotta be leading lady Rui En, who has enjoyed an undisputed lead in the online polls for six straight weeks, apart from a slight scare which saw Jesseca overtaking her two weeks ago.
Rui En’s wide-range of acting capabilities can be seen from her choice of drama series in recent years such as her tough cop turn in Unriddle 1 & 2, playing a bereaved widow in With You, and for her nominated role in A Tale of 2 Cities as girly spoilt brat, Zhang Yale.
Apart from having the acting chops and range, Rui En has RBKD (her official fanclub), a large and well-organized fanbase behind her back. Her fans got back to voting religiously and fervently, and successfully reclaimed her top spot last week, after she lost the lead two weeks back. Their dedication speaks volumes, and for us, it simply means an undisputed win for Rui En.
Rui En in A Tale of 2 Cities and Jesseca Liu in The Oath
The dark horse…
Jesseca Liu — need we explain more? The latter has been running neck-to-neck with Rui En for the top spot since voting commenced on Mar 1, which speaks of her wide appeal and fan base. Not only that, she has managed to – surprise, surprise! — usurp the top spot from Rui En two weeks ago in our last online polls update.
She may no longer be a contracted artiste with MediaCorp but this lithe actress’ market demand and popularity remains. After playing a highly principled western doctor Yang Minfei in The Oath last year, she will be starring opposite Taiwanese heartthrob Kingone Wang in the upcoming Ch8 drama series, Yours Fatefully.
Favourite On-Screen Couple
The stars say…
We’re all for Code of Honour’s Song Yazai (Elvin) and Ou Kelu (Rui En). The pair won honours in this category back in 2010 for their collaboration in The Dream Catchers. The duo’s much-talked-about chemistry has won them fans and a term was even coined to describe their coupling – RuiVin.
The undisputed leaders who have consistently remained in the first spot for the Favourite On-Screen Couple award after seven weeks of voting are the strongest contenders in the category. Their solid lead is further reaffirmed with the help of Unriddle 2, which features RuiVin and coincidentally coincided with the voting period, giving viewers a peek at their chemistry when sparks flew between their onscreen characters.
The dark horse…
Going by the polls, the second hot favourite pair of Jesseca and Chris is set to be the next-strongest competitor against RuiVin.
We wonder why Jesseca and Chris have yet to be christened with a nickname of their own such as ChrisSeca or JessTopher. The duo’s on-screen compatibility can be seen from their first collaboration in ChU’s Secrets For Sale and they were brought back together again in last year’s The Oath, delighting viewers and fans.
Playing a western doctor and a Chinese physician at odds with one another in The Oath, Jesseca and Chris’ onscreen bantering and compatibility has won over a league of loyal fans, opening a slim possibility for this coupling to topple RuiVin’s reign in the polls for Favourite On-Screen Couple.

Fan clubs are furious that this year’s event is ticketed with high prices.
By Rachael Boon
For the first time, fans will have to pay to attend the Star Awards, MediaCorp’s annual glitzy affair which honours the best in local television.
The awards ceremony this year will be held at Sands Grand Ballroom at Marina Bay Sands on April 29. Tickets cost $58 and $98, and went on sale from April 5 from Sistic and the MBS ticketing site.
The event was previously held in the MediaCorp TV Theatre and places such as St James Power Station in 2006, and Resorts World Sentosa last year. Tickets were distributed to fans of nominated artists, which depended on the nominations an artist got, or to fans who wrote in.
The admission fee was a surprise to fan clubs of local artists, whose members are regular attendees of the show.
Undergraduate Rina Oon, 24, chairman of Jollity Club for fans of actress Joanne Peh, has attended at least three shows. “I’m shocked. In previous years, MediaCorp allocated tickets to fan clubs but when we wrote in for tickets this year, they said they’d be charges,” she said.
The Star Awards this year will feature a performance by Korean-American R&B singer Jay Park.
Mr Paul Chan, vice-president of MediaCorp Channel 8 Branding & Promotions, said: “In line with the practices of international award shows, the Star Awards will be a ticketed event and 95 per cent of the tickets have been snapped up.”
Some fans, who are students, said the tickets prices were too steep for them. Ms Oon said:”Some of our secondary school members cannot afford to pay.”
Only five Jollity Club members, including Ms Oon, will attend the show this year, compared to more than 20 members last year. They are all working adults who bought the $58 tickets.
To cope with the costs, fan clubs such as RBKD, which supports actress Rui En and the Yverlasting Yvonne Official Fanclub, which supports actress Yvonne Lim, have plans to help members.
RBKD has an instalment plan for student members, who can pay for tickets in three instalments over three months, while an anonymous donor is sponsoring more than 10 tickets for members of the Yverlasting Yvonne Official Fanclub.
Student Yip Kah Yin, 17, who is a RBKD member, took up the instalment scheme. She will pay for her $98 ticket in three parts and has already paid $41.
Freelancer Stephanie tay, 23, president of Yverlasting Yvonne Official Fanclub, said it was unreasonable to ticket the Star Awards. “The event seems to be catering to international fans who went to see artists such as Jay Park,” she said.
This defeats the purpose of the awards, she added, because “this is an event for Singapore, which is a very big deal for people like us who support local stars and it is held once a year.”
Asked if subsequent Star Awards would be ticketed, Mr Chan said: “We will review this on a year-by-year basis.”
The main reason local fan clubs are so furious, said Ms Tay, is because MediaCorp has not been helpful with the tickets.
She said: “I understand they are ticketing it to make it an international show.
But if they want to maintain the standard of being a prestigious event, at least help local fan clubs by blocking off seats or giving better seats, the way organisers block seats for official fan clubs at concerts.”

Cynthia Wang and Rui En laughing at each others’ mistakes during the filming of a getai scene in “Joys Of Life”.
Under the shimmering lights of a getai stage, Taiwan actress Cynthia Wang and Singapore star Rui En showed off their polished Bollywood-inspired dance moves, during a recent filming session for a scene in Channel 8’s mid-year blockbuster “Joys Of Life”.
The pair moved like professionals, but Wang revealed that they actually had very little time to prepare for their scenes before they had to bust a move on set.
“We just practised the dance steps awhile ago and had to dance on stage immediately!
“It was very rushed but I think we had great chemistry,” said an enthusiastic Wang, who plays Han Rourou, the beauty of Huaxiang Street in the show.
Starring opposite Han Rourou in this duet is Han Yongyong (played by Rui En), the adopted daughter of the Han family, who cross-dressed as an Indian man for this getai act.
“My big sister (Rui En) cross-dressing as a man is what makes this song (“Butterflies’ love for flowers”) so cool,” Wang said with a laugh.
Wang and Rui En not only acted like sisters when the camera rolled, but also behaved like sisters off the camera.
They laughed at each others’ mistakes while practicing their dance moves, shared jokes among themselves and chatted while waiting to shoot their scenes.
“She (Rui En) is like my big sister,” confessed Wang.
“Although we are really acting as sisters [in “Joys Of Life”], I feel like we are really sisters because in most of scenes with Rui En, I’m often seen crying in the arms of my big sister,” explained Wang, going on to talk about the trials and tribulations her character Han Rourou faces and how her big sister (Han Yongyong) is always the one beside her.
“Most of my scenes are very pitiful but we (Rui En and Wang) have a lot of fun together,” said the actress.
