Our Rui En has the tough, or perhaps not so tough decision, of having 2 men in her life. No wonder she looks so stressed up. Calling someone for help?

Who looks best with her? Who would you pick as your ideal man? The serious Hanwei, or the goofy Adrian?

To know who will win her heart, remember to stay tune to “With You”, coming soon on 12 May!

Unlike his usual clean-shaven hottie appearances, Ping Hui sported scraggly-looking facial hair for his upcoming Ch 8 CID/informant drama series with fellow MediaCorp artistes Chen Liping and Rui En. The man loves it and finds it a “manlier” look. He jokingly commented that he might “start looking like the wise-old sage Confucius” if he doesn’t trim it anytime soon.

With the original seven princesses now dwindling down to four, we say it’s high time we get started on our prediction on the next crop of seven promising and young actresses worthy of a tiara title.

It was great while it lasted but like fairy tales, all good things must come to an end. With the impending departure of Jesseca Liu from the diminishing amalgamate of ‘Seven Princesses’ – a term first coined by a local magazine a few years ago – and the remaining four (Jeanette Aw, Joanne Peh, Felicia Chin and Rui En) primed to be the ‘New Ah Jies’, will this spell the end of a princess-era in Caldecott Hill?

Ok, so the term ‘Seven Princesses’ was created for the sake of media hype or perhaps just a random creative conception by the local magazine, and don’t mean nothing to you, but still, it’s not your run of the mill matter to the devoted fans who will painstakingly fight to defend their ‘princesses’ as seen in forums and blogs.

So here at xinmsn.com, we round up a new batch of seven young and promising starlets who [we think] are poised to succeed the tiaras in the coveted list of Caldecott Hill’s [next] ‘Seven Princesses’. Drumroll, please:

Paige Chua, 28

Touted by some to be the next Rui En, for her cool, independent personality and sometimes aloof approach off-screen, this beauty with brains – Paige’s an NUS graduate who majored in Sociology and Geography – may not be everyone’s cup of tea but she’s definitely here to stay.

Kola Zhou Ying, 24

Today, Zhou Ying has signed on with MediaCorp following the success of her notable performance as Hui Min, one the lead role in Channel 8 drama, “Together”. Highly touted as the next big thing, the cute as a button Shanghainese lass who speaks pitch-perfect Mandarin made her debut in a small role in “Table of Glory” and will join the three reigning Caldecott princesses – Rui En, Fiona Xie and Felicia Chin – to host a new 4-parter travelogue show that’s been scheduled to air in mid 2010.

With Jesseca Liu quitting showbiz, is the whole ‘Seven Princesses’ thing passe?

It is time to “move forward in a new direction”, several of Mediacorp’s ‘Seven Princesses’ told The New Paper.

The original septet will be down to just four actresses with the impending departure of Jesseca Liu.

Jeanette Aw, Joanne Peh, Rui En and Felicia Chin remain.

Fiona Xie and Dawn Yeoh left the station last year.

The term Seven Princesses was first coined by a local Chinese entertainment weekly a few years ago. It was picked up by the media and became widely used.

Peh and Aw said the term was just a convenient and flattering way to classify seven actresses and to save people the hassle of saying all seven names.

But they added the label does not come with special treatment when it comes to roles.

Mr Paul Chan, vice-president of branding & promotion for Channel 8, feels “the existing four are the strongest of the seven and they are already at a level befitting the title of ‘New Ah Jies’.”

However, a veteran journalist (Ang Ming Hwa) in the entertainment beat believes the dispersing of the Seven Princesses merely reflects “the sad state of the local TV industry”.

Joanna Goh, Thu, 01 Apr 2010

And then there were four. Now that Jesseca Liu has announced her departure from MediaCorp, the original Seven Princesses of MediaCorp have dwindled down to a quartet. The burning question is: will the disintegration continue?

Remember the hubbub created in 2006 when a local magazine crowned a septet of then up-and-coming nubile actresses in vein of the Magnificent Seven — except these Seven Princesses held beguiling smiles and lithe figures, not guns and lassoes. Today, three years later, things aren’t looking so magnificent anymore. Most recently, a third Princess is continuing the trend of saying adios to the guild. So before and if it becomes an exodus, we’re taking a look back at these still-young lasses whose association with this celebrity sorority has been an integral part of their identity. Otherwise, what’s the point of this tribute piece?

Those who still remain

5) Rui En
The rebel princess who took the path less traveled. She was first talent-spotted in the SingTel hi!Card advertisement in 2001 (remember her mad dash in the red-tanktop and jeans), and made her showbiz debut as a singer. However, fame only came a-knocking on her door after she delved into the world of local TV. In her salad days, Rui En was packaged with a girl-next-door image in drama like You Are The One and Love at 0°C. But she decided that enough was enough, stepped out of the stereotype, and became the cool cat of the litter. Now fans are bowled over by her aloof demeanour and private nature. Even when she turns down roles that demand intimate scenes or “skinship”, she has no lack of projects. She’s in a tricky situation. Should she decide to compromise on your artistic principles, you could be at risk of being labeled as sell-out. But rejecting plum roles that just so happen to come with requisite intimacy could also mean missing out on groundbreaking opportunities.

Is she next to go?: 60%. We’re not quite sure what she wants since she seems to be on crossroads of the meandering path to stardom but yet resisting the commercialism of it. Getting jaded with the industry’s fallacies ain’t the peachiest sign ever. If staying eclectic is your way of pushing boundaries, we say stick to your guns. It’s worked well for her so far.
