Stage 2 of the nominations is here!!!!!!!!

We wanna hear your nomination wishlist for 2 awards this festive week:

Favourite Female Character
Favourite Onscreen Couple

These two awards are by online voting only, so we are expecting the legions of youth fans to rally behind their favourite artistes to help them win the awards! (Online voting period is from March – Apr, dates to be released later) But they need to be nominated before they can get your vote, so tell us!

Being online awards, will the ‘trend 到不清不楚‘ youth drama On The Fringe 边缘父子 get the teen actors some nominations? Showbiz has a very short memory; will fans still remember them? We don’t know! What we do know is that Kim Chia/Edwin Goh/Ian Fang each have a huge fanbase who will retweet their every tweet, will this be enough? Tell us on Twitter, Facebook and 微薄!

Last year’s winners Rui En and Elvin Ng also traditionally do well online, so they may each garner support for nominations in the individual Male/Female categories, as well as the Ruivin pairing in Code of Honour Did you also remember Elvin’s role in C.L.I.F. as the laidback & adorable Sgt Teo 张贵祥, or Rui En’s role as the long-suffering 茶碗蒸 in The In-Laws with Pierre Png?

Did we miss out any AWESOME Female/Couples?

Singer-actress Rui En looks back at her days as an undergraduate at the Nanyang Business School

By Christopher Ong

Rui En was at the iconic School of Art, Design & Media building to shoot the MediaCorp series, The In-Laws. She took time out of her hectic filming schedule to grant Hey! this interview.

She shot to fame as the iconic “running girl” in a SingTel hi!Card advertisement, and real life almost mirrored reel life for actress Rui En given that she came close to running away from school during her time as an undergraduate.

Indeed, if not for the help she received from some “angels” in her life, the Nanyang Business School Class of 2004 alumnus may perhaps not have graduated from NTU with a Bachelor of Business degree.

Back then, on the cusp of making the breakthrough she needed in the hugely-competitive media industry, she found it hard to juggle her work and studies. To top it off, she had to make regular trips to Taiwan to produce her debut music album, Rui Σn vol. 01.

All this led to her wanting to throw in the towel, studies-wise. Says the 30-year-old: “I’ll be really honest, there were times when I wanted to give up but I was persuaded not to by some angels in my life. I am so glad I persisted.”

“I guess it was the fact that I had already started. After a while, I figured I had to finish it no matter how tough it was.”

Perhaps this line sums up Rui En’s character as a fighter. In an interview she gave in 2008, she had talked about her tumultuous growing-up years: her parents divorced when she was 17, and she also smoked and drank from a young age to look “cool” and fit in. Asked why she agreed to such a soul-baring interview, she had said:”I am hoping that kids who read this might realise that no matter how bad your family situation is, you have a choice not to be a victim.”

Back to the subject of school, she says that her last year in NTU was especially difficult because “I had to be in Taiwan a lot.”

Little wonder then that Rui En feels she owes a debt of gratitude to her final-year project group, whom she says helped her greatly. “If I were in their position then, I would have been quite mad. But they were so accommodating and understanding.”

“I really want to thank them for their help, and still feel very grateful towards them today.”

The one with the baseball cap

Rui En kept a low profile in university. One former lecturer, Assoc Prof Joan C Henderson, remembers her as being quiet in class, and also describes the star as “nearly always sporting a baseball cap”.

During the interview, she comes across as engaging and sincere. Maybe this is why the actress has over the years been consistently voted one of the Top 10 Favourite Female Artistes at the local Star Awards. At this year’s Awards, she went one better by clinching her first Best Actress award for her role in the Channel 8 drama With You.

Her achievements also saw her recognised by the university in 2007 when she became a recipient of the Nanyang Outstanding Young Alumni Award, something she feels both “surprised and grateful” about.

Still, Rui En says that just being able to do something she loves on a daily basis is “enough of a prize”.

So, what advice would she give NTU freshmen who want to pursue their passions, be it sports, community service or acting, while studying? She says:”I get a lot of comments like, ‘Oh, you are still in this line?'”

“But I would say that you shouldn’t bother about what people think. Have the courage to pursue your dreams and to go through the difficult times.”

1. Color Her Blue Pages 40-50

When you lost the Best Actress award to Rui En at this year’s Star Awards, did it turn you a depressing shade of midnight blue?

(Shrugs) I’m hopeful with every nomination, but I guess I’m still not good enough? I get over it real fast, though. Whenever I’m down, I usually spend some time by myself, and I’ll be okay. Plus, having a short memory helps. I forget what I’m angry or down about easily.

How much of a disappointment was it that you didn’t win Best Actress?

I was very happy for Rui En when she won, because her body of work for last year was the most dynamic. Acting, got me, is not about winning awards. It’s about going through the emotional journey of the characters I play. I derive great satisfaction when there’s good chemistry on set and I constantly try to exceed myself so I do hope to showcase a better performance this year.

Newly-crowned TV queen Rui En escapes the Star Awards curse with not only a continuous stream of roles, but also high viewership ratings for the current hit The In-Laws.

In the past, many Star Award TV queens seem to have their careers cursed soon after winning, with their popularity dwindling. For instance, 1997’s Carole Lin (The Price Of Peace), 1999’s Cynthia Koh (Stepping Out) and 2007’s Yvonne Lim (Metamorphosis), were all actresses who won the Star Awards’ Best Actress Award and subsequently suffered career setbacks due to declining viewership.

Even Joanne Peh, who was often referred to as a princess by the media, could not escape this fate. After her victory in 2009 with the drama Little Nyonya, she became stuck in the 180-episode Your Hand In Mine, which performed worse than expected.

But Rui En, who had already been crowned as a viewership queen earlier this year, has seemingly escaped the curse. After winning the Best Actress Award at the Star Awards 2 weeks ago, she’s getting strong reviews for her lead role in The In-Laws, a 9pm drama. After playing a simple-minded lady in A Tale Of Two Cities, her new role as a delicate wife in The In-Laws has once again received much praise.

The In-Laws, which is halfway into its run (21st episode shown on Tuesday), has attracted an average of 843,000 viewers. This figure is closing in on that of the defending champion A Tale Of Two Cities, which starred Rui En and Joanne Peh. The 21-episode drama drew a record average of 904,000 viewers.

Rui En is currently filming On the Fringe and already has another 2 TV dramas in the pipeline, Code of Honour and Unriddle II, ensuring she has high exposure in the coming months.
