Rui En has good reason to smile this year – three of the shows she acted in “With You”, “Unriddle” and “Happy Family” placed among the Top 5 most popular drama serials of 2010.

SINGAPORE: Singapore broadcaster MediaCorp released a list of the Top 10 most highly-rated dramas for the year along with the ratings for television programmes which aired on its channels in 2010 on Thursday.

Channel 8 drama “With You”, a family drama with a supernatural twist, took home the top honour of being the most-watched Mandarin drama serial in Singapore last year, with an average of 969,000 viewers tuning in for each episode.

“New Beginnings” trailed close behind, attracting 937,000 viewers per episode with its heartwarming storyline of love and loss while third-placed Taiwan marathon drama “Love” drew 897,000 viewers.

Despite being the designated blockbuster drama of the year for Channel 8, “Breakout” only managed to take the ninth spot, attracting an average of 866,000 viewers each episode and nudging “Mrs P.I.” – which garnered 830,000 viewers per episode – to tenth place.

“Breakout” may not have placed well in terms of television ratings, but the recently aired series, which featured a cast of A-listers like Jeanette Aw, Christopher Lee and Dai Yang Tian, was the most popular show on MediaCorp video portal site xinmsn.com’s Catch-up TV service in December last year.

It was also the third most popular show in 2010 – behind action drama “Unriddle” (number 5 in television ratings) and “With You” – on the service, which allows xinmsn.com visitors to watch previously broadcasted local (and some selected foreign) television programmes online for free.

However, despite diversifying their subject material, none of the locally produced drama-serials managed to average more than one million viewers per episode.

Viewership for last year’s local dramas generally hovered around 800,000 and 900,000 compared to 2009’s crop of family dramas, which saw three productions breaking the one million-viewer barrier.

The full list of the Top 10 most popular dramas is presented below:

We dropped by “A Tale Of 2 Cities” filming the other day at a taekwando school and caught Rui En, Pierre Png and Yao Wen Long monkeying around in between breaks!! They probably hoped these photos would never see the light of day BUT…

While the director wasn’t looking, Pierre demonstrated a mean flying kick move which turned into a somewhat flying eagle / owl / phoenix / condor?? move. See how Wen Long tried to play along with him? :p

Obviously not contented with him monkeying alone, Pierre dragged his unwilling “partners-in-crime” down with him and got them to demonstrate his own version of flying eagle / owl / phoenix / condor?? move!

Kids, don’t try this at home.

Stay tuned for more updates as the the promo for this drama will commence soon!

Ms Kok Len Shoong and Mr Paul Yuen said the departure of some of MediaCorp’s elite stable of Seven Princesses has opened up opportunities for the Malaysians.

The Princesses are Fiona Xie, Felicia Chin, Dawn Yeoh, Jesseca Liu, Jeanette Aw, Joanne Peh and Rui En.

Only the last three are still with the broadcaster.

Ms Kok said: ‘Maybe young actresses are in greater demand because some of the Princesses left. Once they get more chances to appear on TV and produce good results, the public will notice them.’

She added that MediaCorp is always on the lookout for new talents, overseas and local.

Mr Yuen wishes more Singaporeans would take up acting and be less afraid to perform. He said: ‘Fewer Singaporeans are turning to acting professionally…

‘It shouldn’t be just about money or a person quitting acting because you don’t earn enough. If you have the talent and the passion, give it a try.’

PRIME Minister Lee Hsien Loong ushered in the new year amid dazzling fireworks together with more than 20,000 residents in Serangoon last Friday night.

He was at a countdown party organised by the Serangoon Citizens Consultative Committee.

Dubbed ‘Serangoon Swing 2011’, it got off to a rousing start at 6pm with line dancing, bouncing castles and a foam party booth.

The Serangoon Gardens Circus was filled to full capacity as thousands thronged the specially built stage to watch local media artists such as Rui En and Jeanette Aw perform.

As midnight drew close, Mr Lee joined the artists and celebrities on stage to ring in the new year, adding his own well wishes for Singapore.

‘We have had a very good 2010,’ he said. ‘Let’s work together, climb new heights and break new ground, and make Singapore even better in 2011.’
