On the Fringe again?

Identical English titles, a lead character with the same name and a similar object matter should equal sequel, right? Not exactly. Ch 8’s new drama On the Fringe is a fresh take on social misfits that has nothing to do with the 1987 version. Intrigued?

Mouth wide open

Something tells us that round blue pill triad leader Zhang Yaodong is trying to stuff into volunteer worker Rui En’s mouth is not a breath mint.

ON THE FRINGE
TUE, CH 8, 9PM

NEW SERIAL!
Twenty-four years ago, Li Nanxing became a bona fide leading man in the original On the Fringe, playing a charismatic Ah Beng. Cut to the present: he returns in this 20-part remake (and ‘spiritual sequel’) where he plays yet another thug, but this time, he’s a lao beng and ex-jailbird who has spent the last two decades behind bars. But his path to redemption is a bumpy one.

Just when he thinks he is out, they pull them back in – ‘they’ being an ex-associate-turned-triad-boss (Fann Wong!) with territorial and trust issues, and an estranged son (Fighting Spiders’ Edwin Goh, left) who has crossed over to the dark side. Can the reformed gangster save himself and his son from making the same mistake?

1. Special Report! Page 28

This year, for the first time, three major Ch 8 shows starring our biggest and brightest will be filmed entirely in Malaysia, truly Asia. You’ve probably caught the occasional Ch 8 Malaysian co-productions like The Beginning, a rehash of Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing’s Rising Expectations, remade with a mainly Malaysian cast and filmed in a Malaysian city. Then there are Ch 8 blockbusters like The Little Nyonya and Together, where the ’60s street scenes were filmed on location in Penang and Malacca. More recently, there was A Tale of 2 Cities, filmed partly in KL…though you really can’t film A Tale of 2 Cities in just one city, can you?

But this year, the move up north is starting to look like a serious commitment. Yes, only to refer to actual birds kept in cages for amusement. Which is what makes any of these towns the perfect backdrop for period dramas like Nyonya and the three upcoming Ch 8 blockbusters: Kampung Ties, where Yvonne Lim and Ann Kok are BFFs who live in a small village; Code of Honour, an Elvin Ng-Rui En martial arts school vehicle; and the tentatively-titled The Coolies’ Quarters, starring Dai Yangtian as also home to seven million Chinese viewers who, according to the head of MediaCorp Studios Malaysia, Yeo Saik Pin, are much more appreciative of our stars.

Guess who? We reckon the tinted glass should shield this famously reticient and oh-so-cool Best Actress from the discomfort of having to wave at fans when she stops at a red light.

1. Fashion Report Card Page 18

The good, the bad and the what-the-hell-is-that?

Grey matter: We know Favourite Female Character winner Rui En loves her pantsuits and this Hermes ensemble is a class above them all. Extra points for that kinky leather belt around her neck.

2. What a circus! Page 26 & 27

If this is a dream, we know a few people who wouldn’t want to wake up. Joanne Peh, for one, was a big winner, edging out experienced Ah Ges such as Mark Lee and Bryan Wong to bag the Best Info-Ed Programme Host award. Of course, she also made it to the Top 10 Most Popular list. Never mind that she didn’t win Best Actress lah- one cannot be too greedy, right? That accolade went to Rui En, who also won big, bagging the hotly-contested acting prize, along with Top 10 popularity trophy. However, she looked somewhat less thrilled than Miss Peh. While she seemed genuinely surprised when her name was called, she barely managed a smile on stage. C’mon, Rui En, let that too-cool exterior crack a little. It’s Star Awards night, after all.

For the RECORD

(Cow)hide and seek: RUI EN without her pantsuits is like Sue Sylvester without her tracksuits. Even though this all-leather Hermes dress has edge, the Best Actress winner loses her mojo looking demure – and depressed-swathed in this body bag.

And the Award goes to…

BEST ACTRESS
CHEN LIPING Unriddle
JEANETTE AW Breakout
ZHOU YING Breakout
JOANNE PEH Your Hand in Mine
RUI EN With You

MediaCorp Studios senior manager: “RUI EN shows her versatility and this show is so tough-there are so many crying scenes.”

Ch 8 senior exec: “ ZHOU YING, ‘cos unlike Jeanette Aw, no one hated her character. She’s the safest and most refreshing choice.”

Ch 8 drama producer: “ RUI EN has shown that she’s not only good at playing ‘cool’ characters- she’s just as adept at dramatic roles.”

Ch 8 actress: “ RUI EN. It was a very emotional role which required her to dig deep. An award-winning performance.”

8DAYS’ PICK!
We may be alone on this, but we think it’s finally JEANETTE AW’s year to take home the trophy. Hopefully, the judges schizophrenic psycho chicks with singsong voices as much as we do.

BEST DRAMA SERIAL
Breakout
New Beginnings
The Family Court
Unriddle

With you

MediaCorp Studios senior manager: “Unriddle” is not your typical Ch 8 drama and it had very good reviews. I’m also rooting for it ‘cos Paul Yuen (the show’s executive producer) is the cutest EP in MediaCorp.”

Ch 8 senior exec: “Breakout. It may not have rated well, but it was written by Ang Eng tee-his dramas have won this award every year, and 2011 will be no exception.”

Ch 8 drama producer: “With You. It’s very different ‘cos it deals with the afterlife in a very touching way. And it’s also the highest-rated show of the year.”

Ch 8 actress: “Unriddle. I applaud the crew for creating a cinematic feel to this drama-it’s a real breakthrough for local television.”

8DAYS’ PICK!
There’s no front-runner this year, so we’re going with Unriddle– it’s been a long time since Ch 8 produced a crime procedural and a good one at that.
