Actress Rui En’s arms were folded and she seemed guarded, as she sat on stage at the Star Awards Show 1 on Sunday.
On social media, she was bashed for scowling and showing “a face as black as her outfit”.
But the star told reporters she was not in the least disappointed, said Lianhe Wanbao. She explained: “I’m not used to sitting on stage like this. But this will be the arrangement next week.”
The stars usually sit in the audience at Star Awards ceremonies. But the new awards shows seem to be taking a leaf out of the books of Hong Kong’s TVB Anniversary Awards, where the stars and their friendships (or rivalries) are on display on stage.
Major Star Awards such as Best Drama will be presented at Show 2 on Sunday.

“The first time we worked together, the director said we had zero chemistry. But strangely, audiences loved seeing us together. Maybe it’s because they see us as opposites – like I’m the sunshine boy melting the ice queen.”

The annual Asian TV Awards, in its 19th edition this year, celebrates excellence in TV production and performance in programmes across Asia.
Nabbing the Best Actress award was adorable Malaysian child star Puteri Balqis Azizi, seven, who won for the Malay telemovie Balqis. She beat fellow nominees such as Taiwanese actress Tien Hsin, China-born American actress Joan Chen and Singapore’s Rui En.
Acting since the age of two, Puteri said sweetly that winning was “unbelievable”, which prompted everyone in the audience to coo and laugh.

After nearly 10 years of self-imposed exile away from the television lights, the revitalised National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is ready to step back into the limelight.
With rising demand for its service, in March next year, the organisation will be launching a 20-episode Channel 8 serial featuring Rui En, Dasmond Koh and Pierre Png.
This is a different approach to the glitzy television fund-raisers of the past, chairman Koh Poh Tiong told The Sunday Times in a recent interview.
Its aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle, with Rui En playing a kidney failure patient who picks herself up.

A new crop of actresses are carving out a niche on Channel 8, taking on major roles alongside veterans.
Carrie Wong, 20
Who was that new face standing next to Channel 8 bigwigs Christopher Lee and Rui En at the press conference last month to promote Channel 8 drama Against The Tide?
Carrie Wong, that’s who. She snagged the major role of a schizophrenic woman, the younger sister of Lee’s crime novelist character.
Landing this “acting opportunity of a lifetime” so quickly is something the 1.75m-tall Wong finds “surprising”, although she says she earned the role in her own right.
“I got the role after two rounds of auditions, so it’s not like they handed it to me,” she says in English.

The National Gallery Singapore has commissioned Channel NewsAsia to produce a three-part docudrama on pioneer Singapore artist Georgette Chen (1906-1993). The role of Chen will be played by MediaCorp actress Rui En.
Titled The Worlds Of Georgette Chen, the English-language drama will be telecast in April 2015 on Channel NewsAsia and MediaCorp Channel 5. It will also be adapted into Chinese for Channel 8.
Said Rui En on portraying the artist: “In her days, it was rare for women to paint professionally. She was a pioneer on many fronts and her quiet strength and love for life will certainly inspire women today.”
Born in Zhejiang, China, Chen received her art education in Paris, New York and Shanghai. She was a prominent figure in local art history for over four decades and is one of the pioneers of the Nanyang Style of art which marries tropical subject matter with Western painting techniques. She taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts until her retirement in 1981, and received the Cultural Medallion in 1982.
The Worlds of Georgette Chen debuts 29 April 2015 on CNA and Ch 5.
