Club MAD!

Heard about the fan who willed her multi-million dollar fortune to Fann Wong? Just like RBKD isn’t a K-pop band and Jeanius isn’t a typo, there’s a lot more to local fan clubs that you probably didn’t know about.

4. Joining a fan club is like going back to school

Do you miss those fun orientation games you played as a freshman? Join a fan club, then. RBKD, Rui En’s formidable fan club, held an orientation ‘camp’ for its members and potential members at Sentosa in June. The full-day event saw over 60 Rui En-fanatics run amok on the island, play games that included an Amazing Race-inspired scavenger hunt, and put up skits related to Rui En and RBKD. Rui En was not there.

“This idea started two years ago when we realised that our members weren’t familiar with one another,” explains club president Peh Xinyi, 25. “It’s also a good way for potential members to learn about RBKD,” she adds. But if you think taking part in the orientation gets you a free pass into the club, think again. You have to make at least 30 relevant posts about Rui En on the club’s online forum before your membership is “approved”. RBKD, set up four years ago, currently has 111 members. “It’s not easy to join RBKD,” Xinyi warns us. “Only constructive comments count, and we have a moderator to look through the posts every month,” she adds sternly. The rules may be very stringent – it’s probably easier to apply for a housing loan – but it fits perfectly with Rui En’s no-nonsense attitude.

2. Boos & Bravos Page 112

BRAVO to the thrilling new drama Poetic Justice (weeknights, Ch 8) revolving around the lives of a group of ambitious TV journos played by Rui En, Dai Yangtian and Rebecca Lim. While its depiction of how they go about gathering news is a tad too sensationalised to be taken seriously, it’s a minor gripe that’s quickly forgotten and forgiven, considering how fast-paced the story is. The cast’s spirited on-screen rapport helps, too.

If you are a fan, would you do anything to make reporters think badly of your idol?

Such as writing hate mails, using abusive language, each and every time they write about your idol?

Does this even make sense?

Would you do these if you are really a fan of Rui En?

If you do, it’s unbelievable. You sound more like a hater to me.

Languages and emails were not invented for such purposes. The development of Internet has empowered each and every individual with access to the World Wide Web, but too often has this been abused. This is one such case too.

The person assumed the convenient anonymity that Internet has empowered him/her, to harass his/her victims with abusive language and strong words.

RBKD strongly disagrees with such actions. Such wrongdoings should not be condoned. You may wish to file a police report if you continue to be the victim of such harassment.

Boy, have things changed in the local fan club scene since our last feature on it.

New fan clubs with snazzier names have sprouted overnight (yes, we’re looking at you Kimchis, Ianizers and Edwinners), RBKD joins Fannatic Fann Club as the only fan clubs that are officially registered as a society, and DAInamics who once travelled as far as to Heng Dian, China to support their idol disbanded, went through an ugly split, and has since regrouped to form a brand new fan club dubbed “DYT Galaxy” in June 2012.

Forming one-half the backbone behind an artiste’s success in showbiz, you spot these fan clubs rallying and pushing for votes to get their idols in the top ranks year after year at the annual Star Awards, hollering their lungs out and frantically waving fan boards at mall events and shows. Brought together by a common love for an actor or actress, it’s no surprise if they start to hang out like regular pals seeing how a handful of clubs have gone beyond the call of “fan” duty to put their time and energy to good use through regular voluntary activities.

In no order of superiority (we prefer going by alphabetical order), we present to you, a handy guide to the local fan clubs.

RBKD – The Official Fan Club of Rui En
Official fan club of Rui En, created in 2008 with 111 active members

To join RBKD as an official member… you got to have at least PSLE qualifications or equivalent, with parental consent for below 18 years old. There are three types of memberships (honorary, priority and ordinary) opened to the public, for more information head on down to https://rbkd-online.com/join/

Membership perks and privileges include… bonding activities with fellow Rangels and invitation to the private gatherings with Rui En.

Gatherings are usually held… at least once a year depending on Rui En’s schedule. The fanclub also holds many key-bonding gatherings which includes volunteering efforts, outdoor and sporting activities, amongst itself for members to get to know one another better.

RBKD’s last meet-up with Rui En was… at a small café in May, where they had the entire level 2 to themselves.

Recruitment to RBKD is… opened from June 15, 2012 to March 31, 2013 for the membership year starting from July 2012 to end-June 2013.

Under Cover: Rui En

According to NYLON’s DNA, we’re supposed to transform people – but how does one transform the resident ice queen of Caldecott Hill? We thought, let’s make her fiercer. Out came the spiked boots, studded stillettos and of course, makeup to match. Going in a completely opposite direction from her character in her new drama, “Joys of Life”, where she plays a domestically-inclined daughter of a low-income family, we gave her a dramatic, winged out cat-eye and piled on eyeshadow for depth. What we found odd was that, despite her rumoured frosty demeanor, she turned out to be an absolute joy to work with. We’re fans.

The Naked Truth

By Vicki Yang

Vintage just ain’t hip anymore; classical antiquity is in. But excepting scholastic tradition, there’s something quite misdirected about slapping a latin motto onto any contemporary venture, like pointing out its own lightweight show of gravitas and a less-than-historical credibility. But perhaps there’s kind of an apt wisdom behind the idea of “lux veritas” (an elementary translation: the light of the truth), which Rui En’s fan club has incorporated into their slogan. Indeed, a celebration of a decade-long career premised on making goggle box artifice believeable veritably demands a spotlight on the reality behind the channel 8 television images – who is the real Rui En?

Dear All

It’s recruitment period again.

I know I am supposed to write a note; to encourage new fans to join our family and “ex”-members to renew their membership too.

But, I really have no idea what to write.

I only know that I appreciate this silent chemistry we Rangels share. Knowing no matter what, even if you can’t be super active, you are still there with us, as one of us, for us.

There are times when my team and I feel swarmed, times when we feel like we are alone in this, we struggle to cope. But time to time, a different someone will ask, “are you okay?”, and give us a gentle pat on the shoulder, telling us it’s “a job well done”.

You never know how big your small actions are until you are on the receiving end.

Some times I thought we lost you, but no, no matter where you are, you still made it back with us. I thrill at seeing your names, and you know I mean it

My dear members, it is this heart, this sincerity and this togetherness that makes us different. Our membership scheme is only as difficult as your sincerity would limit you. No one can and no one will stop a sincere you.

The application form is a necessary formality, you know this…….

I look forward to having you with us again, together. Remember, you are never just a number to us, you are family.

See you back in colors in forum!

Cheers!

They gestured and mimicked Chinese idioms as best they could and tickled the insides of everyone with their goofy facial expressions and exaggerated actions.

With the nostalgic TV series, Joys of Life, set to debut next week, the show’s actors such as Chen Liping, Rui En, Zheng Geping, Chew Chor Meng, Alien Huang, Cynthia Wang and more, recently reached out to the heartlands to promote their upcoming show.
