The MediaCorp actress thanked Chen Liping for helping her deal with depression and suicidal tendencies.

Should Ch8’s crime drama Unriddle return for a third season?

Veteran actress Chen Liping is hoping it won’t. For her own sanity and co-star Rui En’s.

Liping reprises her role as Da Bao while Rui En returns as Hu Xiaoman, who has been appointed the deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Unit.

At the press conference for the launch of Unriddle 2, Liping said she was initially concerned that there would not be a second season. But after working on the considerably darker sequel, she’d have to consider carefully before taking up the role.

At the beginning of the drama, Liping lives in constant fear that Asura — the main antagonist in the show, who returns to Singapore to avenge the death of his brother Shanfan (played by Zheng Ge Ping) – will appear any time after he leaves a dagger in the eatery she owns.

For Rui En, Xiaoman’s trudging on the grey area of the law took a toll on her mental health. Because of the demands of the plot, she had to let go of all her emotions.

The actress admitted that it still felt scary now that she thinks of it, because she did not know what the consequences were.

“It’s like love, the more you give, the more you feel naked. It’s just how I felt,” Rui En said, adding, “Maybe some people cannot accept this kind of acting. Maybe it’s too real, too ugly, but I had to do that for the scene. I think I’ll regret if I don’t take this risk.”

Gradually, Rui En’s emotional state dipped to its lowest a week into filming.

“After that week, I began to feel depressed one day. I even wondered what it would be like to commit suicide,” she shared.

When Rui En told Liping what she was going through, the latter advised her to let go.

Executive producer Paul Yuen once said that Rui En did not always listen to what everyone said, but would listen to Liping. When asked to comment on Paul’s remarks, Rui En laughed, “It’s not that I listen to her, that’d sound like I’m her daughter!”

The actress admitted that she got along really well with Liping, and added that it was difficult for her to trust people, but she trusts Liping.

When we asked Liping how she had helped Rui En, the actress admitted that she did not know.

“We speak from our heart. I’m a straight-forward person. This is my mouth and I say whatever I want. It’s her choice to listen or not. She’s someone with her own views,” Liping said.

The 47-year-old also felt that in order to let the character come alive, one needs to put herself into the role. While this would affect the actor’s emotions, Liping added that it will all pass eventually.

After almost a decade, Mediacorp has returned to Tuas TV World to shoot the new Channel 8 drama Joys Of Life.

Once the jewel in our local dramas, TV World, about the size of four football fields, was the backdrop for memorable shows like Tofu Street, The Price Of Peace and Wok Of Life.

It was created to look like a bustling town of the 1950s and has three main streets that lead to a three-storey cinema, a railway station, a fire station, a city hall, a church, several mansions and rows of Chinese shophouses.

About 10 years ago, the company gave up the area, which is next to the Tuas checkpoint.

Then last month, MediaCorp returned to TV World to film Channel 8’s 30th anniversary period drama, Joys of Life. The series, which stars Chen Liping, Zheng Geping, Rui En, Huang Wenyong, Chew Chor Meng and Taiwanese artistes Alien Huang and Cynthia Wang, will start airing in June.

Costly

So it became financially unwise and costly to maintain TV World.

Since then, some scenes in period dramas were also filmed in MediaCorp’s own backyard in Caldecott, where busy streets were recreated.

Younger artistes like Rui En, 31, have never filmed in TV World before, but her friends remember the place and told her about it.

“My first impression of the place is that it’s very, very cute. I didn’t know it existed until I was told we were to film here,” she told The New Paper.

“I didn’t grow up in this era (1950s), and it’s very foreign (to me). It’s very nice to have a location to help you with the acting.”

Her friends have also shared stories of how the place is haunted, but Rui En said she has never felt uneasy there, even at night.

She plays a tragic character who is forced to marry a stranger to pay off her adoptive father’s debt.

Joys of Life 花样人间 debuts 26 June 2012 9pm on Channel 8.

Stop, rewind, play

Time stands still in a little-known corner on the western tip of Singapore where stars like Rui En, Alien Huang and Bobby Tonelli are filming Ch 8 blockbuster Joys of Life.

Hot wheels

Rui En stars as a tragic bride and adopted daughter who’s forced to marry a stranger to pay off her dad’s debts. The other stars of the show are gorgeous vintage wheels such as this fully-functioning Volkswagen Beetle. According to the producers, the cool rides are rental from Malaysia which, by the way, looms just beyond this set, past the Tuas checkpoint.

Say it again

Bobby Tonelli, here with Andie Chen and Alien Huang, plays a Brit who falls in love with the prettiest help in his household, Rui En. “My Character learns to speak the language fluently for his girl’s sake, but the Mandarin dialogue was tough for me,” he admits.

Tay Ping Hui plays a police officer for the thirteenth time in the currently-airing drama “Unriddle 2”.

Even though he had played a police officer many, many times before, Tay said he still found it intriguing to portray Zhang Yu Ze (played by Tay), an elite police officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the show, because Zhang is a truly complex character.

“I really like this character and I believe that Zhang Yu Ze’s possibilities are immense. It’s such a pity,” said Tay of his character’s rather short-lived appearance on the show.

However, Tay described the scenes he did have in the show as being “very good and meaningful”, with one of the most memorable scenes he had in “Unriddle 2” being the fight scene between Zhang and his co-worker Hu Xiao Man (played by Rui En).

“It was my first fighting scene with a woman since I debuted.

“I have never hit a woman before much less fight with a woman, so that [scene] was really difficult for me,” explained Tay.

“Usually during filming fight scenes, we don’t need to use real strength, but just need to have good coordination between both parties, to do the fight scene safely without having to really hit each other.

“But Rui En kept asking me to do it for real and I couldn’t bring myself to, so it was really awkward,” he added.

The duo is up neck-to-neck with fellow Favourite Onscreen Couple nominees, Jesseca Liu and Christopher Lee

This just in: Fans of Ruivin (a termed coined by fans for the pairing between Rui En and Elvin Ng) will be glad to know that their online voting efforts over the past week have paid off.

The likable duo won their first on-screen partner award in 2010’s Star Awards for their collaboration in The Dream Catchers. Fast forward two years later, their much-talked about chemistry saw them working together in last year’s Code of Honour and the currently-airing Unriddle 2.

Apart from leading in the Favourite On-screen Couple polls (as of 9am this morning) for their pairing as Song Yazai and Ou Kelu in Code of Honour, both actors are also currently ranked top spot for Favourite Male Character (Elvin as Teo Kwee Xiang in C.L.I.F) and Favourite Female character (Rui En as Zhang Yale in A Tale of 2 Cities), respectively.
