Interpreting the Dream
10 things about The Dream Makers you probably can’t stop discussing (for now)
By Jonathan Fam
5. Rui En and Dennis Chew’s charming sibling reverly
On paper, the madcap guy who plays Auntie Lucy and the cool laconic actress would seem like an odd couple. Yet they share a crackling comedic camaraderie that embellishes the oft-serious drama with its funniest moments. Best non-romantic couple ever.

ariety is the spice to life: While we revel in the chemistry found in the old guard (think: Li Nanxing and Zoe Tay, and Fann Wong and Christopher Lee) and fawn over trendier pairings such as RuiVin (Rui En and Elvin Ng), it’s time to rejuvenate the local scene with newer and never-seen-before TV pairings.

A herd of dairy cows and lush pastures at Ashgrove dairy farm provided a bucolic backdrop for a Singaporean television production team filming on location in the region for the rest of the week.
The TV production has also been in other locations in the state to film a soap-opera style romantic drama series.
Tourism Tasmania, in conjunction with Tourism Australia, hosted the large scale television production to shoot drama series Sudden, which uses Tasmania as the backdrop to a love story.
The plot follows a young Singaporean couple who meet while travelling separately in Tasmania and fall in love.
They have a multitude of shared experiences that are the time of their lives and very sentimental to their blossoming relationship.
The twist comes when the couple return to Singapore and she begins to lose her memory due to an illness.
He must help her remember their past by reliving their time in Tasmania.
The drama is very much driven by the cultural phenomena of Singaporean mega-stardom.
The lead cast are household names throughout Singapore, China and Malaysia. The actors are small screen megastars with a large fan base.
Sudden will be broadcast as a mini-series on Channel 8 (a 24-hour Chinese news and entertainment channel), the highest rating free-to-air TV station in Singapore.

Lost Without Sunscreen
Award winning local actress Rui En always look cool and calm, but here she tells Lieu Wei Ning what makes her anxious.
As a busy actress, how do you keep your skin healthy?
I don’t get much sleep during heavy filming periods so besides drinking lots of water, I try to use a mask daily.
What are some skincare products you use every day?
I’m your typical vain girl when it comes to my skin. It’s important to me that my skin can absorb the full benefits of treatments and for that I use L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Boosting Essence.
What’s your skincare routine like?
Ten steps – remove eye makeup, cleanse, apply Youth Code Boosting Essence, tone, use a mask, apply Youth Code Boosting Essence again, tone, apply serum, moisturise, and apply an eye cream.
What’s your biggest concern?
I tan very easily so I try to avoid the sun as much as possible when i’m not working. I always wear sunscreen, and when I’m out, you’ll see me either with an umbrella or trying to hide from the sun.
What is the one product you never leave your house without?
Sunscreen, without a doubt. I’ve actually had panic attacks when I thought I forgot to apply it! I use two different sunscreens – one for the eye area, one for the face.
Do you ever do without makeup?
It’s important to let my skin breathe, so I don’t wear any makeup when I’m not working. When I’m out, I’ll just have layers of skincare on without any makeup and I’ll look like I have margarine on my face.
What do you do when your skin is in need of an SOS?
I don’t usually go for facials because my skin is ultra-sensitive, but I use masks and creams to boost my skin’s moisture level. To enhance the efficacy of the products, I use the Youth Code Boosting Essence under them.
What are your must-have beauty products?
Concealer! You just put it on and you won’t need any more makeup as long as your skin is okay. Also, fake eyelashes because my lashes are incredibly short.
Which female celebrity do you think has great skin?
Cate Blanchett has perfect porcelain skin. I’ve never seen anyone with better skin. I would give anything for her skin.

Bravo to The Dream Makers for making viewers wonder what’s real and what’s reel.
And this tantalising poser is what makes the show, about the behind-the-scenes goings-on in a fictitious TV station, must-see TV. A C-lister (Jeanette Aw) is told by her bosses not to outshine Dawn Yeoh’s nasty Ah Jie in a talkshow; she is also forbidden from taking seats reserved for Ah Jies in a make-up studio and on the bus. Is this really what happens on Caldecott Hill?
The star-studded cast is the second reason this is compelling TV. Two stand-out performers among them: Qi Yuwu (could his real-life romance with Joanne Peh be the reason he’s so convincing playing boyfriend to Jeanette Aw?) and Rui En (her animated portrayal of a scatterbrain producer enlivens the show at every turn).

Although MediaCorp actor Shaun Chen has 10 years of acting experience, he has to start from scratch in Taiwan.
The 34-year-old will be living there for a year to focus on expanding his career in the region, following in the footsteps of fellow star Christopher Lee.
Chen went to Taiwan last October to take a shot at the Hong Kong, Taiwan and China markets. He made a cameo appearance in the 72-episode Taiwanese idol drama Love, Now.
Earlier this year, he returned to Singapore to shoot the Channel 8 drama The Dream Makers, which is about the showbiz industry.
He plays Du Zhan Peng, the CEO of the TV station’s Artiste Management Unit, who falls for Rui En’s character.

Art mirrors life in The Dream Makers
By Mervin Tay
Local actress Rui En (seated second from left) sharing a jovial moment with fellow actress Chen Liping as actors Qi Yiwu, Chen Hanwei, Zoe Tay and Jeanette Aw look on during the press conference for their upcoming television drama, titled The Dream Makers.
Reel life mirrored real life on the set of Channel 8’s new blockbuster drama The Dream Makers.
And it surprised MediaCorp actress Chen Liping with how blurred the line between make-believe and reality can be.
In the showbiz-theme drama, which premieres today at 9pm, she plays a senior executive heading the drama division of a television station.
The drama also stars Zoe Tay, Rui En, Jeanette Aw, Qi Yuwu and Shaun Chen.
Chen, 47, recently mentioned two scenes in the 30-episode drama that were uncannily real.
In one, a memorial service is held for one of the characters who died.
“One week after filming that scene, we were observing a moment’s silence for Huang Wenyong at Star Awards Show 1,” she said, referring to the veteran MediaCorp actor who died in late April.
Chen then launched into an anecdote about China-born MediaCorp actor Qi, who plays a director in The Dream Makers.
“In it, Yuwu is romantically involved with Jeanette and Rui En”, she said.
“In real life, he fell in love with (MediaCorp actress) Joanne Peh. We only have three princesses left and he romanced all of them!”
Chen was referring to the term “seven princesses”, coined by the local Chinese media around 2006.
It was used to describe seven young and popular MediaCorp actresses – Dawn Yeoh, Felicia Chin, Fiona Xie, Jesseca Liu, Aw, Peh and Rui En.
Today, only Aw, Peh and Rui En remained as full-time actresses.
But Chen said the parallels between fiction and reality did not stop there.
Aw and Qi play a couple in the drama, and after they break up, Rui En’s character falls in love with Qi’s character.
“As we all know, in reality, Joanne got together with Yuwu after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend,” said Chen with a laugh.
