She had a look on her face that threatened to turn water into ice, when she began her acceptance speech for winning a Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award on Sunday.
Was Singapore actress Rui En upset about winning?
It turned out to be all a huge joke.
“That was my true ‘black face’.
“This is me smiling. I hope people won’t mix up the two anymore,” said Rui En, as her stern expression dissolved into a warm smile moments later.
The actress explained during the post-show party that she came up with that rather unusual acceptance speech on a lark.
“I am not somebody who jokes around a lot, so I thought it would be nice and refreshing to joke about myself,” said Rui En.
“It’s basically to tell people to cut me some slack.”
To understand the joke, you’d have to look back a few days to the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 last Sunday.
After the awards, some media outlets had claimed she had been unhappy about the skits performed by Dennis Chew, Quan Yi Feng and a few other stars, which poked fun at her.
But Rui En expressed that these media outlets had blown the whole issue out of proportion.
“Actually I was fine with it (the skits).
“They (the media outlets involved) just took a picture [of me] when I wasn’t smiling, used that and just put the headline that I wasn’t happy about the jokes,” explained Rui En, with a look of resignation on her face.
However, there was no possibility of history repeating itself during the Star Awards 2012 Show 2 post-show party – Rui En was all smiles throughout the event, and gamely posed for photos with the guests.
“I feel it (winning the award) is great! I am grateful to my fans,” said Rui En happily.
Unfortunately for the actress, she will have no time to celebrate her win.
Rui En revealed that she will be busy working on the massive Channel 8 Mandarin drama “Joys of Life” alongside Taiwan star Alien Huang for the next few weeks, though the good news is she will get a well-deserved two-week break after shooting wraps in mid-May.

Singapore actress Rui En and actor Elvin Ng won the Favourite Onscreen Couple award at the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 on Sunday, which recognizes the top talents both in front of, and behind the camera in local Mandarin television.
The pair, who played lovers in the Mandarin drama “Code of Honour”, attributed their win to their fan clubs, which had worked together to garner votes in order to make sure ‘Ruivin’ – a term their fans coined to describe their onscreen pairing – won the award.
“I never thought there’d be alliances in the entertainment industry,” Ng joked, backstage after the ceremony.
“I feel quite safe with the support of Elvin’s fans,” said Rui En with a smile, adding that she intends to give the trophy to their fans.
“I feel this belongs to them!”
Rui En and Ng also won the awards for Favourite Female Character (for Rui En’s portrayal of a spoilt rich girl in “A Tale Of Two Cities”) and Favourite Male Character (for Ng’s portrayal of a dashing police officer in “C.L.I.F”) respectively.

Cynthia Wang and Rui En showing off their polished Bollywood-inspired dance moves for a scene in Channel 8’s mid-year blockbuster “Joys Of Life”.
Cynthia Wang and Rui En laughing at each others’ mistakes during the filming of a getai scene in “Joys Of Life”.
Under the shimmering lights of a getai stage, Taiwan actress Cynthia Wang and Singapore star Rui En showed off their polished Bollywood-inspired dance moves, during a recent filming session for a scene in Channel 8’s mid-year blockbuster “Joys Of Life”.
The pair moved like professionals, but Wang revealed that they actually had very little time to prepare for their scenes before they had to bust a move on set.
“We just practised the dance steps awhile ago and had to dance on stage immediately!
“It was very rushed but I think we had great chemistry,” said an enthusiastic Wang, who plays Han Rourou, the beauty of Huaxiang Street in the show.
Starring opposite Han Rourou in this duet is Han Yongyong (played by Rui En), the adopted daughter of the Han family, who cross-dressed as an Indian man for this getai act.
“My big sister (Rui En) cross-dressing as a man is what makes this song (“Butterflies’ love for flowers”) so cool,” Wang said with a laugh.
Wang and Rui En not only acted like sisters when the camera rolled, but also behaved like sisters off the camera.
They laughed at each others’ mistakes while practicing their dance moves, shared jokes among themselves and chatted while waiting to shoot their scenes.
“She (Rui En) is like my big sister,” confessed Wang.
“Although we are really acting as sisters [in “Joys Of Life”], I feel like we are really sisters because in most of scenes with Rui En, I’m often seen crying in the arms of my big sister,” explained Wang, going on to talk about the trials and tribulations her character Han Rourou faces and how her big sister (Han Yongyong) is always the one beside her.
“Most of my scenes are very pitiful but we (Rui En and Wang) have a lot of fun together,” said the actress.

Tay Ping Hui plays a police officer for the thirteenth time in the currently-airing drama “Unriddle 2”.
Even though he had played a police officer many, many times before, Tay said he still found it intriguing to portray Zhang Yu Ze (played by Tay), an elite police officer of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the show, because Zhang is a truly complex character.
“I really like this character and I believe that Zhang Yu Ze’s possibilities are immense. It’s such a pity,” said Tay of his character’s rather short-lived appearance on the show.
However, Tay described the scenes he did have in the show as being “very good and meaningful”, with one of the most memorable scenes he had in “Unriddle 2” being the fight scene between Zhang and his co-worker Hu Xiao Man (played by Rui En).
“It was my first fighting scene with a woman since I debuted.
“I have never hit a woman before much less fight with a woman, so that [scene] was really difficult for me,” explained Tay.
“Usually during filming fight scenes, we don’t need to use real strength, but just need to have good coordination between both parties, to do the fight scene safely without having to really hit each other.
“But Rui En kept asking me to do it for real and I couldn’t bring myself to, so it was really awkward,” he added.

Cooking, cleaning and acting, oh my!: Rui En is a little nervous about her role in “Joys of Life”.
On the outside, she was calm, relaxed and all smiles, during the commencement ceremony for the upcoming 60s period drama “Joys of Life” on Monday.
On the inside, Singapore actress Rui En said she is “really nervous” about playing Han Yong Yong in the show, a woman resigned to being mistreated by her foster father Han Jian Ren (Huang Wen Yong), and made to do all the cooking and housework in the household.
“This role is very not me, very unfamiliar and very strange,” said Rui En of her character.
“I have done some research. I have asked my grandma and my dad.
“The women of previous eras were actually very accepting of whatever life throws at them, not like now, where we try to change whatever we can change,” observed the actress.
“It’s so interesting, the way women then and women now are so different. It’s been a huge leap.”
“I feel it is very refreshing, but I am also quite nervous to do it because she is a character who is very good at housework and cooking, which are the two things that I am like the worst at! ”
“I am actually very stressed out!”
Cooking, cleaning and acting
Calling Rui En a kitchen novice would be an understatement.
“I can do instant noodles. I can add a fried egg. That’s it. I don’t even know how to cook rice!” she continued.
“When the EP (executive producer) was explaining [the character], I went ‘You have to know that I can’t cook’, then she just stared at me. She was quite shocked you know.”
“I said ‘I can’t even cook white rice’. She was like ‘You can at least boil water right?’ Then I said, ‘Ya, ya, I can boil water.’,” said Rui En with a chuckle.
“It was quite funny actually!”
Though she is not very handy around the kitchen, Rui En declared that she is doing everything in her power, to make sure she looks convincing as Han Yong Yong.
“I have been spending the last few weeks doing cooking crash courses, housework crash courses.
“I’ve had people teach me how people of the 60s would do the housework.
“It’s not like mop and broom you know, it’s like get down on your knees with a towel and wipe the floor that kind of thing,” said Rui En with a grimace.
“Housework is foreign to me. Housework of the 60s is even more foreign to me!”
Just who has been doing all the housework around her house all this time? And who cooks for her?
“So far, it has been taken care of. My whole life, I have been lucky enough to have it taken care of.
“I think I am quite representative of my generation,” said Rui En sheepishly, before revealing that she has a hired helper who does most of the housework for her nowadays.
“I think I will be a lot more ‘advanced’ in doing housework and cooking after this!”
