Li Nanxing says he felt jittery handling the four-month-old because she was so delicate.
Even though local actor Li Nanxing famously played a father of quadruplets on the 2003 Channel 8 TV series Baby Boom, it was not as scary as handling a four-month-old infant for the police drama C.L.I.F. 4, which starts next month.
Even after all these years, the 51-year-old still does not have the “baby touch”.
What is ironic is that his co-star Rui En does. Ironic because she said, before filming for C.L.I.F. 4 started, that she would rather not work with babies because “they can be difficult (and) do not care that the camera is rolling”, though she later retracted her comments.
In C.L.I.F. 4, which premieres on Sept 6 at 9pm, Li reprises his role as Wei Lantian, assistant superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department and the husband of Rui En’s inspector character Huang Zhijie.
This season, they become first-time parents and have a four-month-old girl.

At the show’s press conference yesterday, Li told M in a mix of Mandarin and English: “(In Baby Boom), the quadruplets were older. (This baby) was very fragile because she was only four months old, so we had to be patient with her. I felt nervous handling her, especially when she cried. I panicked.”
He joked: “Rui En told me, ‘Can you treat her more gently?’ Whenever Rui En carried the baby, she would be calm, but when I carried her, she would be crying.”
Rui En did not attend the press conference because she is on leave. According to Lianhe Zaobao, she is overseas for a month to visit her father, who emigrated from Singapore years ago.
On Rui En’s 7kg weight gain for her previous TV drama If Only I Could and the fact that she still appeared chubby in C.L.I.F. 4, Li said: “I think it suits her mum role (here) because it is after her confinement period, where she has to take care of the baby.”
Although they have been paired up for three seasons of C.L.I.F., Li said they are not close outside of work.
While in the middle of filming C.L.I.F. 4 in April, the 35-year-old local actress was involved in a high-profile accident.
The episode put her in a bad light with the public, as many were unhappy about the way she handled things initially.
GAVE HER SPACE
Li himself was infamously involved in a drink driving accident in 1997. He was fined $4,000 and given a 30-month driving suspension. He did not offer Rui En advice on how to cope because his case was different from her situation.
He said: “What I did was to give her space to calm herself down because it happened suddenly. We needed to give her time to process and reflect on her own… because everyone makes mistakes.
“I could tell that she was very sad on set (after the accident), but we just had to leave her alone.”
Li said Rui En was still a “professional on set” and knew how to separate her personal problem from work.
He also commended the way she apologised and bowed on stage at the Star Awards Show 1 in April, saying: “I think it is up to the individual (on how he handles his own situation), but for her to (do that), I could tell that she was sincere.”

RBKD: Kate Pang gave birth to baby girl Avery this morning. Andie shared that “If Only I Could…” co-star Rui En had a part to play in naming his girl, Avery. While filming for the show, Rui En had shared with Andie that she intends to name her kid Avery in future. Andie said that Rui En “jokingly called me a sly person, when I told her of my plans to name my daughter Avery too.†He also shared that she said she would visit them after Kate gives birth.

RUI EN IS HAPPIER DESPITE PUTTING ON 7KG FOR ROLE IN NEW SHOW
At yesterday’s press conference for Channel 8 drama If Only I Could, the 35-year-old Rui En looked calm and prepared.
She told The New Paper: “I’m feeling much better and I’ve been taking care of myself after (suffering from gastric) at Star Awards Show 2.
“I’m happier because I’ve realised that there are a lot of people who love me unconditionally and I can’t ask for more than that.”
If Only I Could, which premieres on May 31 at 9pm, stars Rui En as a frumpy auntie and a mother of one, married to Andie Chen’s character.
She travels back in time to 2006 in hopes of rewriting her life.
When asked what aspect of her own life she would do over if she was given a chance, Rui En said: “I would probably not have chosen to be an actress. My speech at Star Awards Show 1 was all about that and I think I have explained a lot.”
HELPFUL
Rui En is moving on from the episode by filming the Channel 8 cop drama C.L.I.F. 4 and Li Nanxing, who plays her on-screen husband, has been especially helpful.
Li himself was involved in a drink driving accident in 1997. He was fined $4,000 and given a 30-month driving suspension.
Rui En said: “In general, work is always something that I can immerse myself in and it helps me forget whatever is going on.
At a media session in March, Rui En had told TNP: “Three things I don’t like working with are babies, animals and calefare.”
Now, she takes back every word after falling in love with her young co-star.
“You just need to find the right one to play the role,” she said with a laugh.
In the meantime, Rui En has weightier matters to deal with.
She willingly gained 7kg for If Only I Could, which reportedly wrapped up before Chinese New Year. But she has had difficulty shedding the weight.
So she said it was the last time she would make such a sacrifice for a show. However, her weight gain has made her more aware of fat- and body-shaming.
“I actually felt ashamed initially, even though I knew that it was for the show. But then I realised, ‘Why should I be ashamed?’
“Why should women be judged by their weight, the size of the dress they wear, their age or how much plastic surgery they have done?
“It’s ridiculous,” she said.

Actress Rui En, who had a lot to explain after her gaffe in an April 14 traffic accident in Clementi, found herself explaining things over and over again.
Yesterday, the 35-year-old actress had to make another clarification. This time, it was for leaving the Star Awards Part 2 after host Pornsak poked fun at her now infamous one-liner onstage: “Do you know who I am?”
She left almost in a huff instead of joining other TV artistes for the celebration party after the show on Sunday night (April 24), kindling gossip that she was either angry at Pornsak for rubbing salt in the wound, or disappointed that she didn’t win the best actress award.
Truth be told, the actress posted on her official fan club website yesterday that she had to leave because her gastritis had taken a turn for the worse and she had vomited “due to the stress of the previous events”.
“Leaving was not a matter of being angry at Pornsak’s shade or not winning Best Actress,” wrote the actress who created a storm following her remark to the owner of a stationary motorbike that she had knocked down.
Rui En threw up
Her statement yesterday shows she still has yet to pull herself together after the brouhaha over the incident.
“I am sure you understand the toll stress and pressure can take on one’s physicality (sic),” she wrote.
If you didn’t get to see it on TV on Sunday, she vomited in front of the audience, revealed Rui En in the same post.
“In case you guys did not know, I puked literally walking in front of the audience. A lot of people saw me vomit into my hands,” said the actress who had won an All-Time Favourite Artiste award more than a week ago in the first part of the award show.
I am not pregnant
In yesterday’s clarification, she was quick to state that she was not expectant in case people start speculating the possibility.
“Yes, too much information but I feel necessary to explain. And before it all starts, no, I am not pregnant,” she said.
Her fan club website has received many messages expressing concern over her sickness.
The club issued a statement yesterday saying “we were just as worried, so it’s good that Rui En has taken time to update us although she had filming today”.
It said it believed she wouldn’t have missed the post-show party if she could make it.

SINGAPORE -The recent chatter about Mediacorp actress Rui En has moved on from her allegedly sulky demeanour to her new curves.
Looking rather rotund at a recent press conference, she let on that she has put on 4kg for a new role as an “auntie”.
The new Channel 8 drama (If Only I Could) will see her put on a fat suit, Rui En told reporters last week.
She found that with the fat suit, her face and limbs were too slim, which looked unconvincing, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

Her recent roles have seen her portray Singapore artist Georgette Chen in a docudrama, and an actress who becomes disfigured in The Dream Makers 2.
Gaining, or losing, weight for a role is often seen as a sign of commitment for actors, and can be a boost for their careers.

He struggled at first as critics panned his diction and wooden acting skills, with some calling him a “himbo” and commenting that he only got by due to his boyish good looks.
Now, Ng is one of the most popular actors on Caldecott Hill and has won the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste award at every Star Awards ceremony since his debut.
In November, Ng will pair up with his frequent co-star Rui En for a new drama. He will play a villain and a bad husband – something he is looking forward to as he has been portraying “the squeaky-clean good boy” for the past few years.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens celebrates Singapore’s jubilee in a three-day carnival and a range of performances from 7 to 9 August. Visitors will be treated to concerts by local artistes and groups from 7 to 9 August.
In 1959, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was chosen as a venue for then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, to launch a series of cultural concerts with a multi-ethnic theme. Singapore’s first “People’s Variety Showâ€, or Aneka Ragam Ra’ayat, was held in the Gardens during the early years of nation building.
In continuing this tradition, the concert will feature favourite local acts in a multicultural extravaganza, hosted by Suhaimi Yusof and Vernetta Lopez. Local groups and artistes including 53A, Rui En, John Molina, Olivia Ong, Taufik Batisah, Shabir and Corrinne May will form the exciting line-up on 7 August from 4pm to 7pm.

Both are top actresses on Channel 8, both are immensely popular and have rabid fan bases, both are signed to artist management company Hype Records, and let’s face it, the contrast between the two is stark.
In The Dream Makers 2, the pair reprise their roles as love rivals – their characters were both romantically linked to Qi Yuwu in The Dream Makers and in The Dream Makers 2, Rui En and Qi are a couple.
So we simply had to ask them about their never-ending perceive rivalry.
Their replies? There is nothing to be rivalrous about.
“Off-screen (the dynamic between us) is definitely not dramatic at all,” said Aw.
“We’re just very professional actors who play our parts in our dramas to the best we can.”
Don’t think too much
Rui En said with a sigh: “We’re from the same company, that’s probably how this all started. Don’t need to think so much, it’s not as exciting as what you see in a drama.
“I know (the perceived rivalry) would make a good narrative for the media, but the fact of the matter is, we’re both very different and I believe we are just doing our work.”
On the topic of her role, she said: “Our characters start off in The Dream Makers 2 as best friends…despite the fact that her character betrayed me in the first season. That is the most endearing part of my character, she’s so forgiving.”

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s very own Puteri Balqis Azizi has been named best Asian Female Actress at the Asian Television Awards 2014 (ATV 2014).
In a glittering event held at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands on Thursday night, the seven-year-old darling of the screen was crowned queen above her much more experienced peers.
Puteri Balqis won over the judges, who chose her over five other nominees – the seasoned Joan Chen, Rui En (Singapore), Tien Hsin (Taiwan), Kristal Tin (Hong Kong) and Ko Su Chin (Taiwan).
Puteri Balqis, fondly known as Aqish here, had earlier on won the Best Actress award at Malaysia’s Anugerah Skrin 2014 on Nov 7.
The Asian Television Awards is a prestigious event that attracted 1,371 nominations from 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region, vying for 38 awards.
