BRAVO to the kiss-ass car chase scene in On the Fringe (weekdays, Ch 8). The three-minute sequence, which saw a sleek black Mercedes in a high-speed pursuit that climaxed in a fiery explosion, provided some much-needed excitement to the predictable drama about an ex-con (Li Nanxing) struggling to stay clean but ends up working for a queen bee of a triad (Fann Wong is too porcelain-looking to be a bad-ass, but that’s another story for another time). Moral of the story: When the tough gets boring, wreck a Mercedes to spice things up. Michael Bay would’ve approved.

Comedy, drama, or action series, the drama addicts at xinmsn list down sequels and spinoffs of TV series we’ll love to watch!
Text: Joanna Goh
As fellow TV addicts, we lamented at a list of never-ending possibilities to shows like Little Nyonya, The Family Court, and Unriddle. And because we’re such astute couch potatoes and suckers for well-written, logical and relevant TV shows today, you can’t blame us for wanting more.
And while it may seem like we’re milking them for all it’s worth, we know you feel the same way too!
Unriddle
Action, a dash of suspense, thriller, and the addition of tough cookie cop babe Rui En (Xiao Man), explained for the series’ good reception during its run last year. Human-trafficking, kidnapping, murder, psychics, and family secrets – the show’s got it all. The series went with a bang, ended on a high and concluded its main story arc. That’s not just it, a hint of suspense and new unresolved riddles at the end hinted at a sequel investigative series for Xiao Man and gang, hurrah! Production for Unriddle 2 will begin in late 2011 so expect to see it on the gogglebox in 2012.
PSST: We heard that the old cast will come together again for more mystery-solving actions with new additions like Elvin Ng, Yuan Shuai and Adam Chen. In specific, Elvin’s character will be giving Xiao Man a run for her detective skills as her arch-enemy. Sounds exciting? We can’t wait too!

MediaCorp Channel 8 revealed Thursday on their official blog that a sequel to the police thriller “Unriddle”, one of the channel’s top rated dramas of 2010, will air in March next year as part of Channel 8’s 2012 drama line-up.
Some members of the original cast, like Rui En, Chen Li Ping and Tay Ping Hui will return in “Unriddle 2”.
The drama will also feature some fresh faces like Elvin Ng, Romeo Tan and Zhou Ying.
Star-studded commemorative drama
Apart from other titles like the comedy “Double Bonus” which stars Zoe Tay and Joanne Peh’s “Pillow Talk”, a drama dealing with marriage issues, Channel 8’s 2012 lineup also features a massive star-studded drama to commemorate 30 years of Channel 8 drama productions.
The drama, titled “Joys of Life”, is touted as containing “more stars than you can ever count” and is scheduled to air in June.
Chew Chor Meng, Rui En along with a mystery Taiwan idol will star in the show, which will also feature a host of past and present celebrities as well as some aspiring stars.
“Joys of Life” will bring audiences on a journey to 60s and 70s, to experience what life was like when mobile getais were all the rage and when societal norms and values were very different from what they are today.

Did I imagine it, was it an 80s thing, or was the old On The Fringe more electric and romantic?
Definitely, the 1988 Channel 8 classic was more focused on its subject of Singaporean juvenile delinquents than the new On The Fringe, which toggles between teenage drama and gangland thriller.
Much has changed in more than two decades, admittedly: hairdos, fashions, habits.
The Centrepoint Kids have made way for the Facebook generation.
But teen crime hasn’t gone away (Google “Downtown East death”, if you have forgotten), and the reboot of On The Fringe is rather timely.
There is a new clique in the new drama, a group of good bad kids who cut classes, hack into other kids’ blogs and filch snacks, and sometimes, adult diapers for someone’s ailing grandpa.
Like I said, they’re good bad kids – as self-absorbed yet well-meaning as regular teens, though less well-behaved – and the drama has flashes of authenticity and fun whenever it is close to them, capturing the camarade-rie and and confidence of young actors such as Edwin Goh and Phua Yida.
Then there is a living, breathing flashback to the old On The Fringe. Li Nanxing, who was a bad boy in the old drama, is now the long-lost, ex-con dad of Goh’s character – and it is kind of fun, too, even when the joke is at the expense of Li’s character (he has never heard of Facebook).
The trouble with the drama is glamorous corporate gangsters (Fann Wong and Zhang Yaodong) who turn up from nowhere, really, to wage a triad turf war and drag in Li’s character.
It’s likely that they have flown in from a Hong Kong crime film, although Fann and Zhang’s accents – floating between Singapore, China and Taiwan – are so disorientating that it’s difficult to be sure.
Whatever their origins, gangsters in suits, to my untutored eye, just don’t seem native to Singapore, or to the sort of naturalistic teenage drama the new On The Fringe could have been.
Groups of men glowering at one another at funerals, fights at steamboat restaurants: Why does the drama dish up warmed-over bits of foreign crime films, when it can tell a Singapore story?

June: More Stars Than You Can Ever Count In “Joys of Lifeâ€!
Mobile performances were famous back in the 60s and 70s Singapore famous which helped groomed many local singers. Back then, visiting the cinemas were a favorite past time for many. Besides foreign films, one could enjoy local Malay and dialect films. In 1963, black and white televisions were introduced into homes which completely changed people’s viewing habits and lifestyles. The 80s and 90s saw yet another breakthrough in the local entertainment scene. Mobile Getais picked up and so did the popularity of radio. These two important eras can be considered the fruits of labour sowed from the seeds planted in the 50s and 60s. The 60s was an era where values such as friendship and loyalty mattered most. It was unforgettable how people went out of their way to help one another. Unfortunately, as the era faded, so did people’s values…
“Joys of Life†takes on the nostalgic feel of the 60s and 70s, and reveals the secrets behind the glitz and glamour of the entertainment scene. Baby boomers will be delighted to see familiar faces as “Sakura†and “Ling Yunâ€, “Wang Sha†and “Ye Fengâ€, “Zhuang Xue Fangâ€, “Huang Qing Yuan†on screen, reigniting their memories of the past. Artistes who starred in the previous dramas “Wok of Life†and “Springs of Life†will also take on significant roles in “Joys of Lifeâ€, together with MediaCorp’s veteran, established and aspiring artistes. The production team also hopes to invite former artistes back onscreen as guest stars in this drama in this mega 30th drama anniversary blockbuster drama.
The main cast includes Chew Chor Meng who returns onscreen as a movie poster illustrator cum storyteller, Rui En as “Mulan†and we heard that the production team intends to invite a popular idol from Taiwan to be cast as the wacky male lead. “Joys of Life†also include Chen Li Ping, Zheng Ge Ping, Yvonne Lim, Zhang Yao Dong, Romeo Tan, Huang Wen Yong, Lin Mei Jiao, Andie Chen, Kate Pang, Yao Wen Long, Pan Ling Ling, Patricia Mok, etc to commemorate 30 years of drama celebrations on Channel 8!

Dear All
It was most heart-warming for us and Rui En to receive your words of support, understanding and encouragement. It matters a lot to us.
Many of you are concerned about Rui En. She is fine and has decided to focus on her filming in Malaysia because this matters most to her currently.
We understand that many of you are concerned how Rui En and RBKD may be be unfavourably perceived due to media biasness, thank you for your kind concern.
To us, this was one incident that less misleading information could have prevented, but it was not.
To us, this was one incident that a single sincere clarification could have stopped, but it was not.
To us, this was also one incident that less conflicting and contradicting statements could have put a stop to, but it was not.
You might also think that this was one incident that need not have been like this if not for Rui En or our reaction, but you are not right, because we did not ask for this.
In life, everyone is different. We not only look and behave differently, we think and consider issues differently. What matters a lot to some people might not matter at all to us; however, it is basic manners for us to respect and be mindful of what matters to others that might be insignificant to us, this is defined in dictionaries as being Considerate.
To some of you, Rui En might have overreacted.
But to Rui En, it is a matter of integrity and principles, and also her firm belief that sexual/physical abusing of women should never be used as a form of attention grabbing ploy for any purposes, including for the promotion of a drama. And these, matter a lot to her.
For RBKD, it was a tough call. We know the road ahead would not be easy, we know we might offend people, we know we might be misunderstood, we know it is easier for us to just censor Rui En’s post and prevent it from being posted, we also know it is easier for us if we just keep our mouths shut and pray that people forget about the incident totally. But is the easy way out the right way to go?
Truth will eventually speak for itself, definitely.
We seek neither attention nor trouble, but only to guard the integrity and principles that matter most to us, most to her.
We thank all media, with the exception of one, for handling this incident with as much caution as possible.
We thank all fans, for voicing out in support of Rui En when it matters most.
We thank all Rangels, for never ever wavering your belief in Rui En and in us too.
Lastly, we thank Rui En, for standing firm by your belief and speaking up for it. You taught us valuable lessons:
1. To never fear doing what is right;
2. To safeguard the beliefs that matter most to us; and
3. To mean what we say when we claim that we empathise with the victims of sexual/physical abuse.
Mean what you say and say what you mean.
May this incident comes to a closure with this as we realign focus to what matters most to us now, the show “On The Fringe” itself.
.
Regards
Xinyi
