Don’t be surprised if you spot Rui En sitting at a kopitiam, dressed in her T-shirt, shorts and slippers.

It’s normal, says the MediaCorp actress. For Rui En, being natural and comfortable is the key to self-confidence.

“I think I look best wearing shorts, T-shirt and slippers in the kopitiam,” laughed Rui En.

“At the end of the day after filming, you just want to change out of the clothes and be comfortable. So that’s my day-to-day style and the most natural side of me.”

She is also perfectly comfortable with showing her bare face as she shared that she usually puts minimal make-up, even during work.

“Even on-screen, I don’t wear foundation and I just apply make-up base, concealer and powder. In some shows especially, like the upcoming Dream Makers where I’m playing a director, I’m practically showing my barest face.”

Rui En joins the ranks of international stars such as Gong Li and Fan Bing Bing to become the latest face for L’Oréal’s Youth Code. At a promotional event at Ngee Ann City yesterday, the star told xinmsn in an interview that fate landed her this endorsement deal.

“I actually like to experiment with a lot of skincare, and I happened to pick up Youth Code just as L’Oréal approached me.”

This is also Rui En’s first endorsement in four years. Admitting that she has always been rather picky about her endorsements, Rui En explained that she needs to believe in the product before taking up the deal.

“I don’t want to do it for the sake of money or just for the sake of doing it. I don’t want to feel like it’s a sham or promote something that I don’t even believe in.”

When asked about the remuneration, Rui En cleverly avoided the question with a simple reply, “Let me just say that they have been very sincere.”

However, the actress who is known for her devotion to charity work added that she would like to put the money to good use by giving back to society. Helping children from the lower income families is something that is especially “close to her heart”.

“Kids don’t get to choose whether they are born with a silver spoon or not. There are actually a lot of low income families in Singapore, and most of us who are living comfortably are not aware of it.”

Speaking of her notable style transformation over the years, the ‘ice queen’ explained that she “was a girl and became a woman”.

“I think it’s a natural phase of growing up. The tomboy part and wearing shorts, T-shirt and slippers aspect of me will always be there, but I guess when you grow up, you realise there are pretty things out there, so why not wear them?”

The eyes are the windows to one’s soul, and to Rui En, that’s very true. When asked which part of her body is she most confident of, the actress highlighted that she likes her eyes best because she expresses emotions through them.

“Human beings’ eyes are very interesting because you see a lot from a person’s eyes and that’s how you get to know him or her.”

The tough girl may appear all confident, but she has had her fair share of insecurities as well.

“I did go through a period of time when I felt confused and thought how come I didn’t look like those girls on TV and why isn’t my skin as fair as them etc.” However, the actress has come to accept herself for who she really is and is comfortable in her own skin.

2013 is proving to be a good year for the local actress, with her second Best Actress win at the recent Star Awards and the new endorsement. Given her success in her career, is there anything that she feels missing in her life?

Giving a rather unexpected reply, Rui En answered, “Pets!”

“I’m taking care of my grandma and she’s really afraid of animals, but I would love to have a dog and 20 cats.

Other than that, the 32-year-old said that she enjoys being in solitude and her life is “pretty much complete”.

“I’m not a fan of the idea that you need someone or something to make you feel whole. I think you should be complete yourself first,” she added.

SYNOPSIS

About The Dream Makers:

Life is like a show and a show is like a replay of life. The goggle box that is called a television set telecasts gripping drama serials on a daily basis. Isn’t everyone’s life like a show? Who does not fight and struggle between work and family? Who is not affected by the various stages in life and vicissitudes of life? The seemingly splendid life everybody leads in fact hides a life of loneliness. Friends may be many but buddies are few. In the “City of Media”, everyone has his life story. Everyone is a scriptwriter and a producer. How one’s story should end lies in one’s hands…

Helmed by Caldecott’s four ‘Ah Jies’, Zoe Tay, Chen Li Ping, Rui En and Jeanette Aw, The Dream Makers is MediaCorp’s first ever attempt at an exposé (albeit exaggerated) of the local entertainment scene. Also stars Chen Han Wei, Qi Yuwu, Shaun Chen, Guo Liang, Rebecca Lim, Desmond Tan, Ian Fang and Jayley Woo.

He hasn’t been very active in the local showbiz scene for the past seven years.

So it took many by surprise when Malaysia-based Singaporean actor Aaron Aziz beat Channel 8’s biggest stars like Fann Wong, Jeanette Aw and Rui En for the title of Singapore’s Most Popular Actor at the inaugural Social Media Awards held at Marina Bay Sands last Friday.

But nobody was more stunned than Aaron himself.

He said: “How could I possibly win on the Singapore front since I haven’t been active in Singapore for quite a while?”

His score could be attributed to his solid online fanbase.

Ever since Singapore-based label Zardozë entered the fashion scene in 2011, all eyes have been on them. The brand has since gone on to recruit 2011 Star Creation winner Chen Zhigang as lead designer, as well as Parsons graduate and reality show The Apartment participant John Paul Rangel as Creative Director.

The Zardozë Panthea line is marketed as the high-fashion sister to the brand’s ready-to-wear line, so there was an instantaneous change in mood and design when the runway switched up for the Panthea show.

We say kudos to the designers for coming up with daring and sometimes provocative creations (like the red and black dress below). The painstaking embroidery and embellishments which have become a brand signature really stood out on the runway.

However, as these gowns are obviously meant for red carpet appearances and gala dinners, the brand still has room to develop its knowledge about what sort of cuts and fabrics will find favour with their desired clientele.

That said, we do think that famous front-row attendees Rui En and Fann Wong did look every inch the Caldecott princesses they are, decked out in custom Zardozë creations. Designs fit for Singapore acting royalty, we say.

You can have your cake and eat it too; these individuals are the living proof of it.

Entertainers don’t exactly need a degree in their line of work, but these celebrities didn’t let that get in the way of them completing a degree.

While some of them were discovered through talent contests while in university, others managed to earn their certificates while managing an already blossoming career.

Other celebrities were also able to excel in both fields.

Here we take a look at some who managed to accomplish it all.

Power Up Your Beauty Regime

The Secret Revealed

L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Boosting Essence is a revolutionary breakthrough inspired by 10 years of gene research.

Powered by Pro-Gen Technology, Youth Code Boosting Essence increases the expression of recovery genes involved in cell renewal.

Rui En’s Secret

What’s your daily skin care regime like?

First, I use two types of makeup removers – one for lips and eyes, and one for the face. I follow this up with a cleanser, toner, L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Boosting Essence, serum and moisturiser. I also apply sunscreen, which is a must for the day.

Tell us about your experience using L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Boosting Essence.

I am a skin care junkie so when I saw the product during one of my shopping trips, I decided to give it a try. After adding it to my regime, my skin looked more radiant. Plus, since it helps with skin absorption, my other products seem to work better. Due to my long working hours, my skin tends to get dehydrated. But after using the essence, I no longer have that problem.

Any special tips on using L’Oreal Paris Youth Code Boosting Essence?

The essence is so light so all I have to do is to gently pat it in. One trick I have is to use just a few drops of it before applying a facial mask.

Do you have any beauty secrets to share?

I am a firm believer of using facial masks every day! I also drink lots of water to ensure I am properly hydrated at all times.
