This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the release of the top and final five nominees in the acting categories for the annual Star Awards ceremony. Without further ado, find out who shone through their roles and performances to clinch a coveted spot in the nomination list.
For the actresses, two veterans – Cynthia Koh and Kym Ng – stood out with their impressive turns in Show Hand and It Takes Two. While this marks Cynthia’s third nomination in the Best Actress category after 2005’s Portrait of Home, this will be Kym’s first. Rebecca Lim also joins Kym as a first-time entrant for her stellar portrayal as a psychopath doctor in Unriddle 2.
The trio will be competing against former Best Actress winners Joanne Peh (Pillow Talk) and Rui En (Unriddle 2) for the coveted trophy this year.
Now that we’ve laid out the nominees in the acting categories, the next piece of news—we believe—should be of utmost interest to fans: the online categories.
Moving on to the ladies, fans of Kimberly Chia (Don’t Stop Believin’), Felicia Chin (Don’t Stop Believin’) Rebecca Lim (Poetic Justice), Rui En (Poetic Justice) and Ann Kok (It Takes Two), gear up and get ready – it’s going to be tough competition in the Favourite Female Character category.
The competition heats up in the Favourite Onscreen couple category. This year, we see a birth of new TV couplings running for the award – apart from the usual pairings of Chrisseca (Christopher Lee and Jesseca Liu in Game Plan) and Ruivin (Rui En and Elvin Ng in Unriddle 2).
Zheng Ge Ping and Ann Kok who endeared TV viewers with their unlikely pairing in It Takes Two, will be going up against bittersweet lovers Dai Yang Tian and Zhou Ying (for The Quarters), and Alien and Rui En’s onscreen union in Joys of Life.
A total of four awards (Favourite Male Character, Favourite Female Character, Favourite Onscreen Couple and Favourite Host award) will be decided via online voting on xinmsn which kicks off in two weeks’ time on Feb 21.
Favourite Female Character:
1. Deng Yilin – Kimberly Chia in Don’t Stop Believin’
2. Du Si Man – Felicia Chin in Don’t Stop Believin’
3. Feng Luo Ling – Rebecca Lim in Poetic Justice
4. Liu Yan Zhi – Rui En in Poetic Justice
5. Vivian – Ann Kok in It Takes Two
Favourite Onscreen Couple:
1. A Pao and Vivian – Zheng Ge Ping and Ann Kok in It Takes Two
2. Bai Jin Hai and Huang Qiu Mei – Dai Yang Tian and Zhou ying in The Quarters
3. Hu Xiao Man and Xie Lang Feng – Elvin Ng and Rui En in Unriddle 2
4. Zeng Hao Ren and Zhao Xin Tong – Christopher Lee and Jesseca Liu in Game Plan
5. Zhao Ming Xing and Han Yongyong – Alien Huang and Rui En in Joys of Life
Best Actress:
Cynthia Koh in Show Hand
Joanne Peh in Pillow Talk

We have been blessed.
They say donating & volunteering are acts of giving, but actually, we are the ones who have gained.
My members shared with me how much they have enjoyed the volunteering experience, that they have learnt so much from the elderly and how they were so inspired by them too.
For myself, it must be the people and the little moments.
That moment,
when you see the CNY deco from us last year,
still proudly displayed on the elderly’s doors.
That moment,
when the elderly folks remember us as the anonymous group,
who have been visiting them with CNY goodies yearly.
Words can’t describe the immense sense of satisfaction.
And my lovely volunteers, what more can I say.
No one knew Rui En was joining,
not my members,
not Xinmsn.
No one knew Xinmsn was joining,
not my members,
not Rui En.
Only I do,
but still,
they all came,
and that says a lot about them.
Thank you for liking this birthday gift, and cake.
Thank you for joining us, and completing the meaning of this project.
Thank you for enjoying this volunteering experience, with us.
And thank you, for the chance to share our blessings.
We have been blessed.

#8 Charity work: Start the New Year with a good deed
Instead of splashing out cash on visits to your nearest cinema or SISTIC outlet, take it from us and start the year on a good note with a charitable deed.
At the invitation of Rui En’s fanclub, RBKD, we took part in their annual charity drive two weekends ago – done in-lieu to celebrate their idol’s birthday and Chinese New Year. We had a hand in the entire process from packing the New Year goods and gift hampers to knocking on doors of old folks staying in single-room flats in Ang Mo Kio to distribute the packed goods and spread some festive cheer. Although we walked away from the experience with aching arms and calves, knowing that we’ve brightened a person’s day with our words and presence is in itself, far more fulfilling and rewarding. Sense of satisfaction: irreplaceable.

In her Element
This may not be Rui En’s first cover for us, but it’s a particularly momentous one as it marks her crowning ELLE’s Actress of the Year for 2012.
Four years have passed since her last cover shoot with us and she’s come a long way in that time. Her infamous “ice queen” label aside, she’s also acquired a couple of other things – a crop of other awards and along with that, a whole load of acting cred. Ever the professional, the actress strikes each pose with the utmost concentration, then studies the photos on-screen to see what can be improved. Even while holding a pose in front of the camera, she checks herself by getting her assistant to capture and bring her the shot on her iPhone. Does the perfectionist in her ever let up?
Rui En – Actress of the Year
On a winning streak and landing role after plum role, ELLE Awards 2012 Actress of the Year Rui En has officially hit a new high in her career.
By Tan Wei Lin
Rui En’s been extremely busy – not just with filming dramas back to back, but also successively racking up acting awards. After snagging her first Best Actress win at the 2011 Star Awards, she’s nabbed ELLE’s Actress of the Year for 2012, and hot on the heels of that, took yet another Best Actress honour from the Asian Television Awards 2012. Without a doubt, it’s been an exceptional two years for the actress, who’s also been enjoying plenty of screen time on Channel 8. And it looks set to continue through this year and beyond.
While she may not be bubbling with joy, our queen of cool asserts that she’s genuinely happy about the recognition, but is determined to remain grounded amid praise that her wins have generated.
How did you feel when you learnt about your win?
Rui En: I was pleasantly surprised and very happy. I don’t let myself have any expectations when I’m nominated, because I don’t like to base my sense of achievement on awards. But because of that, when I do get something, it’s a very nice surprise.
How do you assess your own acting?
Rui En: I watch myself [on screen] a lot. When I’m filming, I make it a point to watch and review the rushes after each day’s work. I’m actually my harshest critic and I set very high standards for myself. It’s never good enough for me but all I can do is try to keep getting better.
Let’s be honest — the local drama scene and its pool of actors are small. Do you ever feel limited by it?
Rui En: I try not to let my performance be affected by the people I’m acting with. Yes, the right person can give you the right chemistry, but it doesn’t always happen and you cannot expect it to. Your performance, in a way, has to stand on its own. I would love to have more opportunities to work with new people but unfortunately the circle is how it is. I guess it’s up to us to challenge ourselves.
Any plans to advance your acting career overseas?
Rui En: No, I don’t make plans like that. I’d rather let things happen when they’re supposed to. I don’t go thinking “Well, now I’ve made it here, I’m going to China.†If the opportunity comes, that’s great; if it doesn’t, that’s fine. The markets out there are a lot more complicated than a lot of us realise.

Picture this: In one corner of the studio, Rui En preens and poses for the cameras as the crew make mental notes of her characters’ 101 outfit coordination to prevent slip-ups at filming. At the other end of the tiny room, Zoe Tay perches herself on the sofa, taking tiny sips from a flask of hot water to battle the strong blast of cold wind from the air-conditioning unit above. In the midst of the fuss and mess, a bespectacled and preppy-looking Chen Hanwei steps in the studio in a hot fiery red suit…
The photography studio teems with excitement and chatter at the imaging session for the newest Ch8 drama production on the hill, The Dream Makers, and the vibe is infectious and understandable. After all, how often does one get to catch or work on a drama headlined by a mix of the station’s top veterans and actresses?
Playing a celebrity host with a caustic sense of humour, Hanwei made clear that his Dream Maker role is unlike his previous ‘aunty or uncle-type of characters’ in his interview with xinmsn outside the studio.

Top local actresses such as Zoe Tay, Chen Liping, Jeanette Aw and Rui En are raring to cross swords in Ch8’s upcoming drama The Dream Makers
Local actresses Rui En and Jeanette Aw will finally have the chance to collaborate on a same drama in Ch8’s upcoming production The Dream Makers. Though the two highly rated artistes are both managed by HYPE Records, this is the first time they will act alongside each other.
While speaking to xinmsn at the drama’s imaging session, Rui En shared her excitement about the opportunity and beamed, “I’ve been waiting so long to work with Jeanette!â€
The Dream Makers stages itself as a spiced-up version of the local showbiz, with the story revolving around the people working in a television station. Rui En takes on the role of a producer in the Variety Unit, while Jeanette plays a hardworking second-tier artiste who is waiting for her big break.
Rui En said that she was relieved to be able to wear “comfortable clothes†for her character this time round, after having to don restrictive “officer’s clothes†for her previous roles in Unriddle and C.LI.F. 2.
She described her character Fang Tong Lin as a “quirky and imaginative girl who will inspire several comedic scenesâ€, which is a refreshing change from her recent “serious rolesâ€.
To portray a natural image of a director, the actress has been observing her colleagues at work, even taking notes of details such as their clothing styles, behaviour, and habits.
“I put a little of myself into each of the character that I play,†said Rui En, who is satisfied with the space to develop her role in the new drama.
The star-studded cast of The Dream Makers also features Zoe Tay, who stars as Zhou Wei Yun, the Executive Director of the Variety Unit in the TV station. The Queen of Caldecott Hill shares a superior-subordinate relationship with Rui En in the drama, making it the third collaboration between the two actresses.
Impressed by the strong line-up, Zoe is eager to pit her acting skills with the other actors, especially from the younger stars, whom she has watched mature. “It will be interesting to see how they have grown from their experiences and how the chemistry between us will evolve,†she added.
And while The Dream Makers illustrates the complications within the show business on the small screen, both Zoe and Rui En have emphasized that Singapore’s entertainment industry is “not as excitingâ€.
