RBKD: One page interview with Rui En where she shares about how it felt playing a real-life icon (Georgette Chen) in docudrama, The Worlds of Georgette Chen. Through this role, she finds a “stark similarity” with the artist whereby both of them are constantly trying to better their craft.
There were many first-times for Rui En in this docudrama. It’s the first time where she did not have many lines to remember; the first time she wore a cheongsam for a show; the first time she fell in love with art.
8DAYS did a special “Boos & Bravos” – The Worlds of Georgette Chen edition. They gave “Bravo” to the inspired casting and Rui En’s myraid costumes which gave the show a more authentic feel, and “Boo” for insufficient airtime for Rui En.

After her marriage to prominent Chinese politician Eugene Chen, Georgette, played by Rui En, journeyed through the winter of her life. History and fate intertwined but she continued to produce an impressive oeuvre of oil paintings depicting her motherland China.

Synopsis
The Worlds of Georgette Chen, a three-part docÂuÂdrama will premier on 29 April 2015 on ChanÂnel NewsÂAsia. It spans across three periÂods, giving viewers an insight of the draÂmatic worlds of GeorÂgette Chen. These periods include the French period from 1927 to 1933 where she received her early art education; the Chinese/Hong Kong period from 1934 to 1948; and the Penang/Singapore period from 1950 to 1980.
Being inspired by her surÂroundÂings, GeorÂgette proÂduced porÂtraits and still lifes from each phase. She perÂfecÂted her techÂnique and taught at the NanÂyang Academy of Fine Arts.

RBKD: Rui En steps into the shoes of pioneer artist Georgette Chen for her first documentary-drama, The Worlds Of Georgette Chen, a three-part docudrama collaboration between Channenewsasia and National Gallery Singapore.
This role is one which few identify with the actress — art. While filming in Paris, a self-portrait of a certain Vincent van Gogh changed her view of art. “It’s so different when you see it in person because the thing that stood out were his eyes. I could actually feel that he was a tortured soul. It just basically changed everything for me — all my opinions about art being hifalutin, about being intimidated by art, just flew out the window because it was just a human connection,†Rui En told TODAY.
Rui En hoped that with her role as Georgette Chen, she could help spread an appreciation of art to people who wouldn’t necessarily be inclined towards it. “I felt, beyond the glamour, beyond all the Star Awards and the trappings of celebrity, there are certain things that you could do to make a positive change to society or individuals,†she said. “I felt this was one of those — to bring heartlanders and younger children to just take some tentative baby steps to not be intimidated by art.â€
One of the challenges of doing this docu-drama was dealing with issues of accuracy and Rui En felt “a little bit of pressure†in playing this historical figure as there was not much footage to base her performance on.
The Worlds of Georgette Chen debuts 29 April 2015 on CNA, 8pm.
