Local actress Rui En has a reputation as the ice queen of Caldecott Hill.
But that standoffish persona was nowhere in sight during C.L.I.F. 3’s press conference last Friday.
The 33-year-old was chatty and cheery and she joked around with the cast on stage, prompting actress Tracy Lee to wonder if something had happened during filming to cause this difference.
Rui En said with a smile: “Many people saw the change in me and asked me if there is a man in my life now.
“But it’s really because I became a Christian right before the filming of this drama. I feel happier these days.”
She added that happiness comes with age, as she found she could let go of things more easily.
“In the past, I had this overwhelming pressure to perform well in what I do. I am still finding a way to do well in my job without giving myself pressure,” she said.
“It’s very hard, but I’m always finding ways to do that. It comes with maturity.”
In C.L.I.F. 3, Rui En reprises her role of Zhijie, an officer in charge and also the wife of fellow policeman Lantian (Li Nanxing).
Being able to act opposite Li again was an experience Rui En likened to coming home.
She said: “I’ve had a lot of chemistry with Li since the day we met. We went from not knowing each other at all to feeling really comfortable with each other. I am very lucky to have a partner like that.”
Their pairing on C.L.I.F. 2 earned her a nomination for this year’s Favourite Onscreen Couple at the Star Awards.
The star is also nominated in the same category for her roles opposite actors Qi Yuwu, in The Dream Makers, and Romeo Tan in Sudden.
She has a Best Actress nomination for her role in The Dream Makers.
Favourite Couple
Having played the female lead opposite a number of leading men, Rui En said that her favourite couple role was with Elvin Ng.
She said: “Every time I work with a different person, there is new chemistry. But if I have to choose one, it will be Elvin.
“Our own fans are very supportive of us together on-screen and it’s fun. I am surprised that ‘Ruivin’ has become a thing now.”
The term ‘Ruivin’ was coined several years ago by fans after the actors’ pairing on The Dream Catchers gained popularity.
The duo are so popular they have bagged the Favourite Onscreen Couple Award at the Star Awards two years in a row.

Fortunately for Rui En, her hair and make-up people like her enough to transform her into her most glamorous, feminine and prettiest self to date – to the point of being almost unrecognisable.

Although MediaCorp actor Shaun Chen has 10 years of acting experience, he has to start from scratch in Taiwan.
The 34-year-old will be living there for a year to focus on expanding his career in the region, following in the footsteps of fellow star Christopher Lee.
Chen went to Taiwan last October to take a shot at the Hong Kong, Taiwan and China markets. He made a cameo appearance in the 72-episode Taiwanese idol drama Love, Now.
Earlier this year, he returned to Singapore to shoot the Channel 8 drama The Dream Makers, which is about the showbiz industry.
He plays Du Zhan Peng, the CEO of the TV station’s Artiste Management Unit, who falls for Rui En’s character.
The Dream Makers 志在四方 is now airing at 9pm on Channel 8.

Art mirrors life in The Dream Makers
By Mervin Tay
Local actress Rui En (seated second from left) sharing a jovial moment with fellow actress Chen Liping as actors Qi Yiwu, Chen Hanwei, Zoe Tay and Jeanette Aw look on during the press conference for their upcoming television drama, titled The Dream Makers.
Reel life mirrored real life on the set of Channel 8’s new blockbuster drama The Dream Makers.
And it surprised MediaCorp actress Chen Liping with how blurred the line between make-believe and reality can be.
In the showbiz-theme drama, which premieres today at 9pm, she plays a senior executive heading the drama division of a television station.
The drama also stars Zoe Tay, Rui En, Jeanette Aw, Qi Yuwu and Shaun Chen.
Chen, 47, recently mentioned two scenes in the 30-episode drama that were uncannily real.
In one, a memorial service is held for one of the characters who died.
“One week after filming that scene, we were observing a moment’s silence for Huang Wenyong at Star Awards Show 1,” she said, referring to the veteran MediaCorp actor who died in late April.
Chen then launched into an anecdote about China-born MediaCorp actor Qi, who plays a director in The Dream Makers.
“In it, Yuwu is romantically involved with Jeanette and Rui En”, she said.
“In real life, he fell in love with (MediaCorp actress) Joanne Peh. We only have three princesses left and he romanced all of them!”
Chen was referring to the term “seven princesses”, coined by the local Chinese media around 2006.
It was used to describe seven young and popular MediaCorp actresses – Dawn Yeoh, Felicia Chin, Fiona Xie, Jesseca Liu, Aw, Peh and Rui En.
Today, only Aw, Peh and Rui En remained as full-time actresses.
But Chen said the parallels between fiction and reality did not stop there.
Aw and Qi play a couple in the drama, and after they break up, Rui En’s character falls in love with Qi’s character.
“As we all know, in reality, Joanne got together with Yuwu after breaking up with her ex-boyfriend,” said Chen with a laugh.
The Dream Makers 志在四方 is now airing at 9pm on Channel 8.
