Seeing Rui En in a make-out scene. The little miss priss doesn’t drink, party or fraternise with her co-stars. And she certainly won’t kiss on screen.

Geping, you have a black belt in taekwondo and you were once local TV’s go-to action star in the ’80s and ’90s together with Chen Tianwen. It’s been many years since Ch 8 last filmed a drama of this genre. Do you think these newbies can cut it?
I used to tell my wife (actress Hong Huifang) that there’s no new generation of action stars in MediaCorp after Vincent Ng left, but with this show, I saw something. They were all a bit reserved when filming first started but as time went by, I could see the spark and hunger in their eyes. It’s very encouraging to see them put in so much effort into the training. Rui En would even grab any one of the guys to practise her moves with. I think she kee siao (went crazy) with all the fighting (laughs). I can say that 90 per cent of the fighting you see in the show was executed by the actors. If you ask me, if Rui En continues training, she can be the next Michelle Yeoh. Andie has the potential to be the next Vincent.
Looks like you guys have really bonded.
Geping: It’s true – they treat me like a father. Rui En, especially. She’s very cool, but in front of me, she behaves like a little girl, like my daughter. As for the red wine, I think I accumulated close to 30 bottles which I finished by the time filming wrapped. The guys will drink with me when they are free. Rui En doesn’t touch alcohol, but I drink almost every night (laughs).
So what’s the first thing you guys did when you got home?
Elvin: It’s like I got my life back! (Everyone laughs) Rui En and I were the last ones to wrap. I remember it was about four in the afternoon and we flew back to Singapore a couple of hours later. Both of us aren’t as adaptable so we couldn’t wait to come back. I remember sitting in the car and going (pumps fists in the air) “I got my life back!”

Bravo to the action sequences in the Ch 8 martial arts drama, Code of Honour (weekdays, 7pm). A recent ep saw Elvin and Geping come to blows in an exciting battle with each swiftly blocking the other’s punches, deftly side-stepping attacks with deep lunges and delivering flying kicks. The well-choreographed and convincing fight scenes sure make up for the clumsy storyline about Master Geping’s search for a successor for his clan.
