SINGAPORE: She may be known as one of the ‘Seven Princesses’ of MediaCorp, but there are no airs or graces about Singaporean singer-actress Rui En.

So down-to-earth is she, that she prefers to see herself as a frog. And sings about it too!

In her sophomore album “United Nations”, Rui En says that her second single “Frog” describes herself and people in general – in their yearning for something more in life.

“(The song is) about me, being like a frog, and I’m always trying to get out of my well… I try, but I can’t,” said the 27-year-old in an interview with Channelnewsasia.com.

“We’re all frogs in some ways… we’re all reaching out for more, perhaps for things like money or power. So ‘Frog’ is about that. Sometimes we keep jumping (to peer beyond) but we don’t know why we are jumping, or what exactly is it that we want.”

For Rui En, the extra piece of sky she wants to catch is “freedom”, which she says she constantly tries to create for herself, such as the freedom to express her thoughts and emotions which she did by penning all 11 tracks on her new album despite the slight difficulties she faced in the language.

“I’m English-educated so my Chinese is really not that good,” she said. “When I first started writing lyrics two to three years ago, it was really, really difficult as I tend to think in English and try to translate it to Chinese, and sometimes, the Chinese version just doesn’t feel right.”

Released some six years after her debut album, “Rui En Vol. 1”, the latest release “United Nations” marks Rui En’s return to the music scene with a good mix of both upbeat tracks and sad heartfelt songs such as “Slow Dance”, “Let Go”, “Journey” and “Empty Bottle”, which she says that are reflections of her journey through life.

“The title is a spin-off from the term ‘United States’ – ‘states’ being moods and emotional states. It basically means it’s a collection of songs that has very different kinds of ‘me’ and the lyrics are about everything in life that I feel inspired by.”

But re-visiting music does not mean the Caldecott princess, or frog, is going to give up her acting career. She is currently filming a new Channel 8 drama series “The Dreamcatcher”, slated to air in February next year.

“Acting and singing are closely tied, they’re two very different worlds and I get different kinds of job satisfaction,” she said. “I can’t pick, it’s like asking people to choose between two favourite children.

“Acting – you affect people, and I think that it’s beautiful when you are able to surpass the space or gap between the television and the viewer and actually touch the person, and that is the power of acting. For singing, there are songs people listen to when the going gets tough and I want to be able to have songs that can help people through a rough patch.”

And currently, Rui En the frog is happy as she is, and firmly insists she does not want to be a princess.

“Most people may want to get out of the well but they don’t know what is out there, do they? To me, I think trying to jump out of the well is trying to get rich or trying to attain something that you may not even understand why you need to attain. So, nope, no princesses for me.”

本地歌手瑞恩推出新专辑，在新达成举行了签唱会，和歌迷分享她的最新作品和心情点滴。

向来我行我素的瑞恩，帅气的黑色外套搭配牛仔裤和靴子来到签唱会。在新专辑中，她亲笔写了其中八首歌的歌词，表达自己出道至今的心情和想法。

尽管是新专辑的歌曲，忠实的歌迷在台下也一字一句跟着唱，对瑞恩的支持程度，可见一斑。随性的瑞恩和台下的歌迷打成一片。

~Ms Lu Rui En 卢瑞恩小姐~

One of the most recognisable faces on the local entertainment scene, Ms Lu Rui En’s career as an artiste literally rose to meteoric heights in 2001 after she appeared in a popular SingTel hi!Card commercial as the iconic “running girl”. She was barely out of junior college then but managed to balance her burgeoning career with studying for a Bachelor of Business degree at the Nanyang Technological University till her graduation in 2004. To the industry experts at Artiste Networks, her potential was apparent from that very first advertisement. They signed her up and in 2002 she released her debut album. Featuring a variety of musical genres from Rock to R&B, it revealed a mature and powerful singing voice.

Starring in Taiwanese superstar Jay Chou’s music video, “Secret Code”, Rui En quickly moved to add acting to her list of pursuits. In the five years since, she has starred in over 10 MediaCorp drama series and won two Star Awards while continuing to perform at concerts for the Nanyang Technological University, Community Chest and the President’s Star Charity Shows. In 2005, her place in the public eye was cemented when she was chosen to sing the National Day song, “Reach Out for the Skies”. Asked to reflect on her career so far, the multi-talented beauty concluded that she loves both acting and singing. But with a track record like hers, it is anybody’s guess what she will surprise us with next.

If you recall, local actress Rui En is also a singer who released her debut album “Rui En Vol.1” in 2002 with the hit single Bai Se Yu Mao. She rendered the song with a strong vocal just like her personality is. Having spent a few years fronting the camera, she is returning to the studio and the microphone, expressing her truest self through her songs.

In her new album, eight songs are penned by her; in which there are songs on her perception of love and relationships, attitude towards Singaporeans and also thoughts on travel. She laughs and comments that her varied themes were a result of the unclear and indefinite direction she had and basically wrote anything which popped to her mind. Rui En has been known to be reserved about sharing her personal life through the media so perhaps this album contains the most candid answers you may want about her.

Being English educated, writing Chinese lyrics is a great challenge for her. There were many thoughts to tell and emotions to express, but the initial words she penned do not reflect her actual thoughts. Describing the process seemed to have brought her back to relive the painful history. Fortunately, she managed to deliver what she wants in the end.

Despite these great efforts, Rui En has never thought of getting an award as recognition for her hard work. She says she does not pine for any awards; be it the Star Awards or the Hit Awards. To put in the best for her current jobs and taking things within her stride is what matters to her. She expresses satisfaction with her singing performance in ending theme song for drama “By My Side” as she spots a confident smile.

Rui En’s second album is scheduled to be released in November, when she will have to manage the promotional events and filming of a new drama. On the hectic schedule, she says: I’ll take it step by step.
