It’s the biggest award ceremony in local showbiz and time of the year again for us to look into our crystal ball and predict the eventual winners for the Top 10 Most Popular Artistes for Star Awards 2011
We know we sound like a broken tape recorder repeating the same ol’ stuff, but this we must reiterate.
The Top 20 (10 from each gender) Most Popular Male and Female Artiste Award is a voting game aka high school popularity contest that is anchored by a simple mechanism — the voting hotline. With the eventual outcome based on 50% votes and 50% public surveys, we say it’s time to pick up the phone and start dialling away lest you want to end up disappointed at the outcome on Sunday night.
Judging by forces of nature, and by that we mean fan clubs (or cult followings in some cases) and general public appeal, identifying the shoo-in winners of this category is as easy as A-B-C.
While popularity’s the main driving force of this voting game, we’re not forgetting the artistes who have slowly but steadily worked their way up the ladder, and the underdogs with undeniable onscreen likability.Who’s to emerge victorious and triumphant that night? We make our guesses…
Our take on the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes:

Winning Pedestal: Rui En, Jeanette Aw, Joanne Peh
And then there was three. What would be of the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes ranking if it fails to include the remaining trio from the original magnificent seven of Caldecott Hill?
The hottest — though no longer the youngest — commodities on the hill, it doesn’t take much to assume that they will are shoo-in winners for this category judging by sheer size of their expanding fan clubs. Year after year, they never fail to live up to expectations; we’re not expecting this year to be any different.
With Rui En taking on drama after drama projects, you see her on the 9pm drama slot almost all the time — don’t get us wrong, we’re not complaining bout that! She’s a versatile actress with the acting chops, sufficient TV exposure and a massive fan base. And while Jeanette’s currently missing in action with overseas filming commitment in Malaysia, the omnipresence of her fans is not one to be ignored — else how would you explain her On-screen couple (drama) win with Chris Lee last week?
Of course, we can’t forget 2010’s media darling Joanne. So what if she’s only had one drama last year (Your Hand In Mine)? This tech-savvy babe needs no promotional pushing from dramas for she’s been hogging the headlines with her outspoken take on baring it all for the cameras and of course, being the globetrotting face of Jetstar.
In the Safe Zone: Quan Yi Fong, Yvonne Lim, Vivian Lai, Tiffany Leong, Michelle Chia, Lin Pei Fen, Zhou Ying
They don’t enjoy massive fame and appeal like the three above but we daresay these ladies are in a completely different league of their own.
The Underdogs: Kym Ng, Michelle Chong

Behind the scenes: Rui En and her on-screen ‘colleagues’ discuss lunch at their office in the Singapore Botanic Gardens
You’ve watched this star’s on-screen adventures in a variety of exciting drama serials. Most recently, she played a hard-boiled police officer in Unriddle, and a trendy girl-about-town in A Tale of 2 Cities.
But have you ever seen Rui En climb a tree?
In her latest drama,The In-Laws, this princess of Caldecott Hill plays an NParks arborist. Her character, Jiazhen, is a girl-next-door whose passion for nature provides respite from the drama she faces at home.

Behind the scenes: High up in the branches of a tree, Rui En looks every bit like a bona-fide arborist.
As part of her preparations for her role, Rui En watched a documentary which featured NParks’ arborists. “It was quite an eye-opener, because I never knew that there were people being paid to actually take care of the trees on a daily basis,†she said. “I always took it for granted that our trees and gardens just took care of themselves!â€
Rui En’s tree climbing scenes took place under the guidance and watchful eye of NParks’ real-life tree climbers. Although it was an entirely new experience, she enjoyed it: “It was easier than I thought it would be, and it was actually quite fun. I’m not scared of heights, so it was exciting.â€

Rui En’s ‘body double’, Ow Siew Ngim, is a certified arborist and experienced tree climber. She was impressed by Rui En’s willingness to climb a tree for the shoot, even though the scene could also have been staged with the use of a ladder. “I thought she was quite adventurous,†commented Siew Ngim. “She’s also really cool in person – just like on TV.†Siew Ngim also shared that the down-to-earth actress had no qualms about sharing the sweaty climbing equipment.
Because she plays an environmentally-conscious character, Rui En incorporated some of her own eco-friendly habits into the drama. For instance, ‘Jiazhen’ carries the same recycled tote bag in every single episode. “The wardrobe [department] prepared a few bags for me, but I thought it might not be that realistic if Jiazhen kept changing bags. My own recyclable bag was the only thing I found suitable, and it’s probably going to have a hole in it very soon because of all the use,†she quipped.
Rui En’s co-star and on-screen love interest, Pierre Png, also filmed some scenes at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, where the arborists’ offices are located. He enjoyed the location shoot’s unique setting: “The lush, green open space gave me a sense of freedom and peacefulness. Great for anyone who wants to clear their mind, anytime!†In particular, the ‘$5 Tembusu tree’ evoked fond childhood memories for both Pierre and Rui En.
So while you’re catching The In-Laws, keep your eyes peeled for the exciting scenes of Rui En tackling tree climbing. And if you’re inspired by her to do the same, why not check out a recreational tree climbing course – or even consider a career with NParks!
The In-Laws airs on Mediacorp Channel 8 from 12 April, weekdays at 9 pm.

In the last of our three-part Star Awards prediction special, xinmsn brings you our final prophecy on what this Sunday’s Star Awards ‘Best Categories’ slate will look like.

It’s Star Awards frenzy weekend once more! Will it be Rui En or Jeanette Aw for Best Actress? Or will it be like a bolt from the blue? Will it be a starry night of perennial favourites or an unexpected twist of dark horses to emerge victorious in the ‘Best Categories’?
Fans are surely crossing their fingers for the favourite nominees right now. It is, after all, the biggest star-studded annual event in our local media scene.
Best Actress Nominees: Chen Li Ping (Unriddle); Jeanette Aw (Breakout); Joanne Peh (Your Hand in Mine); Rui En (With You); Zhou Ying (Breakout)
We say: Rui En

There’s a Hokkien saying – “No horse run!”, typically used in horse racing jargon to describe a champion horse which is way ahead of the field – In this case , the versatile actress is undoubtedly the champion horse here.
Nominated for her role in With You, Rui En has once again demonstrated her fine acting chops. Proving that she’s just as good playing dramatic roles as she is with “cool” character, the talented actress known for her frosty demeanour aced the role as a grieving wife and mother-of-one who lost her husband in a road accident.
Definitely an award-winning performance hands down.
Dark Horse: Jeanette Aw
Will the schizophrenic psycho Yang Nianqing in Breakout propel Best Actress nominee Jeanette Aw to Caldecott Hill’s most coveted throne? After all, this isn’t the first time the actress has been nominated.
As much as we’d like to place our last dollar on Rui En, Jeanette Aw’s conniving smirks and goosebumps- inducing rhythmic slurs in her multiple personality disorder character was certainly no child’s play, and exceptionally memorable. So, can the pretty-face princess Jeanette give ice queen princess Rui En a run for her money?
We say it’s a 50-50 chance.

Ch 8 drama producer: “ RUI EN has shown that she’s not only good at playing ‘cool’ characters- she’s just as adept at dramatic roles.â€
Ch 8 actress: “ RUI EN. It was a very emotional role which required her to dig deep. An award-winning performance.â€
8DAYS’ PICK!
We may be alone on this, but we think it’s finally JEANETTE AW’s year to take home the trophy. Hopefully, the judges schizophrenic psycho chicks with singsong voices as much as we do.

Ch 8 senior exec: “Breakout. It may not have rated well, but it was written by Ang Eng tee-his dramas have won this award every year, and 2011 will be no exception.”
Ch 8 drama producer: “With You. It’s very different ‘cos it deals with the afterlife in a very touching way. And it’s also the highest-rated show of the year.”
Ch 8 actress: “Unriddle. I applaud the crew for creating a cinematic feel to this drama-it’s a real breakthrough for local television.”
8DAYS’ PICK!
There’s no front-runner this year, so we’re going with Unriddle– it’s been a long time since Ch 8 produced a crime procedural and a good one at that.
