10 Questions with Rui En
The perennially popular MediaCorp actress and face of cosmetics giant L’Oreal shares her outlook on change, her career and what’s up in the new year.
Did you manage to stick to 2014’s new year resolution (what was it?) and what’s your resolution for 2015?
I never make new year’s resolutions. I just try to be a better person every day, one step at a time.
What’s your worst habit or character trait that you would like to change?
Procrastination.
You’ve recently starred in your first baddie role in Against The Tide. What’s the next step in pushing the envelope?
I would love to say otherwise but complex roles for females are extremely rare in Singapore. I would jump at any chance to try anything I have never done before.
Your profession is all about change. How do you plan to reinvent yourself in the coming year?
Reinvention just for the sake of it is ultimately futile. Reinvention should be a natural progress as an artiste matures.
You’ve focused most of your time on acting so far. Is singing something you would like to do more of in the future? Which gives you more satisfaction?
I’d love to do both at the same time. They are two very different art forms and give different kinds of satisfaction.
Describe your fashion style. Is your taste constantly evolving or do you have a more or less fixed look that you stick to?
It’s constantly evolving. In my daily life off-screen, I am highly mood driven. Sometimes I’ll feel like wearing a dress or putting on red lipstick. Other times I stick religiously to the Singaporean uniform – tees, shorts and slippers. Singaporean and proud.
Which city/country do you most want to visit this year?
I would like to explore Europe more.
What new skill/hobby do you hope to learn and why?
Art appreciation and history. I simply just fell in love with Monet and Michelangelo.
If your slate for the entire year is suddenly cleared, what’s the first few things you would want to do?
Make travel plans.

RBKD: Rui En shared that she visited a NKF dialysis centre prior to filming as part of her preparatory work. She cringed and felt for the patients when she witnessed needles being inserted for dialysis purposes. However, she did not tear or explicitly express sympathy as she felt the need to show them the respect; she opined that even if one were to tear, it should be behind their backs as the patients would rather be treated with dignity and not sympathy. We totally agree with Rui En on this and salute her for it.
Rui En also shared in the video on how she has the tendency of hitting people who makes her laugh and how she would only hit the ones whom she likes/ is comfortable with.

RBKD: Besides the nomination list, I-Weekly collated 3 main areas of focus to note, including the returning of Felicia Chin in victorious manner with her nomination in Best Actress. I-Weekly opined that Felicia’s rape scenes in “The Journey: Turmultous Times” is a traditional crowd-pleaser with the judges and has chances of winning as a result. However, they added that before she can achieve that, she will face two hurdles in Rui En, who plays a villian role in “Against The Tide” for the first time, and in Joanne Peh, who was complimented for her always steady and reliable performance in C.L.I.F.3.

RBKD: Besides the nomination list, 8 Days listed 5 main areas to note including Joanne Peh’s double nominations which was unexpected to them. They wondered if she might pull a Judi Dench stunt for “Shakespeare in Love” whereby the latter won an Oscars for a mere nine minutes’ performance.
