在新戏中，彭耀顺饰演第6感特强的周文安，因为看得到鬼魂张扬（陈汉玮饰），而被迫帮忙他的家人，也对其妻子思琪（瑞恩饰）产生爱意。

虽然未曾与瑞恩合作，并觉得她很神秘，不知合作起来会如何，但彭耀顺大赞：“听说她是个可爱的女孩，而且皮肤很好”。

至于陈汉玮，彭耀顺和他去年底同时入围《亚洲电视大奖2009》最佳男主角表，最后由彭耀顺脱颖而出。但陈汉玮的演技有目共睹，彭耀顺说他很尊重对方，甚至因为必须和他演戏，而感到心悸。

此外，继在《Polo Boys》中饰演父子，彭耀顺和鹤天赐再度同台，但彭耀顺却成了眼中钉，因为鹤天赐戏中女友对彭耀顺产生好感。彭耀顺笑说，如果两人要争女人，他会让鹤天赐赢，因为他是美男子！

《我在你左右》从5月12日起，每逢星期一至五晚上9时，通过8频道播出。

The 29-year-old actress will play a mother for the first time in upcoming drama I’m With You. Good thing she’s a-ok when it comes to kids

If you’ve bought into Rui En’s all-sunshine-no-dark-clouds chirpiness and outgoing character in current drama Happy Family — a far cry from the ice-cool and poised figure she cuts in person — then the local starlet’s next role shouldn’t take much to convince you likewise.

The wisp-thin actress, who turns 29 this Friday, is set to play a mother of a seven-year-old child in upcoming drama I’m With You — and a widowed, pregnant one at that, after onscreen hubby (played by Chen Hanwei) gets killed in an accident and becomes a ghost who bugs the only human (Adrian Pang) who can see him to help his family out.

It’s a role “totally different from what I did in Happy Family,” she admits, before adding that it also felt “very foreign and alien” to her at the beginning, especially with it being her virgin attempt at matronly personas.

Then again, there’s nothing like research to handle the apparent lack of maternal intuition.

She’s done all her homework to ensure she nails the part. “I read a lot of books and spoke to some mums about what’s it like to be a mother and being pregnant so I know more about the mannerism and emotions. Apart from these little details, the rest is up to me to immerse myself in the role to make sure I pull it off convincingly.”

More crucially, she’s not allergic to children, unlike the showbiz proverb of actors never working with kids or animals. In fact, this lass has been volunteering at a children’s home since last year. Never mind that it started out as a New Year’s resolution (for 2009).

“I promised myself that I’d some charity work because it’s something I think I should have done a while ago, but frankly I was lazy. Finally, last year, I volunteered at a kids’ home. I visited the kids and also took them on outings like to the beach and organise things like Christmas parties.”

Because she’s an only child in her family, she considered the time spent with the home’s kids, mostly of primary and secondary school-going age, to be “the first time I was really interacting with children. Before that I doubted my ability to get along with them, but after this I realize it just comes naturally.”

While we don’t doubt that her comfortableness around kiddies will come in handy as he plays mummy in the show, we’re curious as to how she feels about her first-ever collaboration with Adrian Pang, who winds up falling for her in the series. After all, the actor’s Mandarin-speaking anathema is just about as well-known as her own bête noire on filming intimate scenes.

“I can understand his apprehension and feelings,” she says good-naturedly. For my first few Chinese dramas, I started out from being a position where I’m not good with speaking Mandarin. I worked with Pierre Png before and these guys really memorise word for word, so I know it can be stressful. So I do sympathise and I’ll definitely help him out.”

Her co-star also made headlines of late when it was confirmed he would leave TV station MediaCorp (the date is set for this April) for a career in theatre, the medium with which he originally started in.

With their show seemingly being his last Chinese drama production before he bids adios to TV land, Rui En simply said, “If he thinks it’s the right thing to do, and now is the right time to go, I say go with what you feel. Then I support his decision.”

Rui En will play a wife and mother for the first time

This makes Rui En the first among the Seven Princesses to leave the castle and move on to playing mature roles.

Yes, we know she is the cool, strong-willed and unconventional one among the Jeanette Aws, Joanne Pehs and Felicia Chins.

This career move will certainly differentiate her even more from her ‘royal’ peers, who are still playing young single girls.

We wondered if the decision was deliberate. Why take such a big leap forward, Rui En?

‘Why not?’ she shot back.

‘I think it’s good to have something fresh. It’s a huge risk, but without risks, you can’t move forward.’

Then she laughed and added, as she leaned forward to squeeze this reporter’s arm, ‘Eh, I’m 29 years old this year!’

Turning serious, the 1.69m-tall actress – whose previous roles in The Dream Catchers and My School Daze saw her tackling mostly strong, independent and highly educated single girls – said: ‘I can’t pretend to be a teenager or a teenybopper any more. I’m also not about to start lying about my age. As I grow up, the characters I take on have to grow up as well.’

And how they will grow.

Next project

In Rui En’s next project, tentatively titled I’m With You, she will play a wife and mother for the first time.

It is supposedly a very dark drama, where a succession of tragedies befalls her character Siqi – one of which is the sudden death of her husband (Chen Hanwei) in the first episode.

His spirit, however, lingers in the human world and pesters Adrian Pang’s character, the only person who can see and talk to him, to help his family get over his death.

You can expect some flutterings of romance between Rui En’s character and Adrian’s, but nothing too much for a recently-widowed woman.

Rui En will begin filming the drama later this month.

Although wading into new territory makes her jittery, and it is way out of her comfort zone, she says she is looking forward to it.

But if you have a mental picture of Rui En as a frumpy aunty in I’m With You, think again.

Her character Siqi is a fashion designer in her early 30s and a modern mother.

Rui En nevertheless cringed a little when she described what her alter ego will look like.

‘She’s quite feminine and always wears skirts. I also have to wear hair extensions to make my shoulder-length hair longer. It’s been a long time since I had that image,’ she said.

But isn’t she concerned that there’ll be no turning back to playing young-ish characters once she’s stepped into mature roles, currently hogged by 30-something actresses like Cynthia Koh and Ann Kok? (See report, right.)

Rui En pondered for a while before saying: ‘I’m honestly not worried about this yet. I hope that I perform sufficiently well to prove to people that I can play a role like Xiaodong and also a mother. I have to rely on myself to prove it.’

Xiaodong is her uneducated, simple-minded and happy-go-lucky character from the Channel 8 drama Happy Family, which premieres at 9pm on 19 Jan.

In that role, which was filmed from August to October last year, the usually aloof Rui En replaces her trademark don’t-mess-with-me attitude with a wide toothy grin.

Even her co-stars joked that she smiled more in those three months of filming Happy Family than she usually would in a year.

However, there’s one other role that this reporter hopes to see her take on, one that’s certainly out of her comfort zone.

How about playing a damsel in distress, I asked her. It is so unlike the self-reliant and strong actress.

‘Can I?’ she asked incredulously, breaking off into laughter.

‘Okay, that would be quite challenging. Hmm, I do have something in me that’s quite independent because that’s the way I grew up and lived my entire life.’

Take note, scriptwriters.

明年重头剧《星州之夜》 瑞恩欧萱争上位

明年阿姐们槓龟，反倒是中生代吃香。像瑞恩，单单明年首半年，就有《过好年》和《我在你左右》两部大剧，瑞恩形象大突破，在《过》里演傻妹，又在《我》里当妈妈、孕妇。

《星》剧本出自金牌编剧洪荣狄之手，他在2008《小娘惹》捧红了欧萱，2009《当我们同在一起》让戴阳天上位，2010年《星州之夜》2女1男主角人选，因此备受注目。据悉，加利谷山中演员们已对此剧虎视眈眈，尤其剧中一忠一奸的歌女主角，更会让一票女星争破头，皆因它将是后年《红星大奖》入围的大热门！

至于2女主角方面，外形和气质都典雅，怀旧剧“常客”欧萱，即有机会再挑大梁。最近在《当》中引起注意的周颖，演绎起“好歌女”应该也很适合，形象大突破的瑞恩机会也不小。

Big news for people who really care about 瑞恩 Rui En! Quickly go grab the latest issue of i-Weekly (cover with Jeanette & Dai Yang Tian)! Rui En is becoming pregnant and the father of the child is a 40 years old man!

Enough of the tease since last night…hehe… It’s Rui En’s 2010 second breakthrough drama lead role! This time, she is offered a role usually given to more matured starlets like 郭淑贤 Ann Kok, 许美珍 Cynthia Koh and 林湘萍 Yvonne Lim. Ahem…should the 3 熟女 icons be very worried now that a princess is making a cross over into their 熟女 territory? Will this ‘trend’ spell the end of the reign of the 熟女stars?

Acting as a ’simple and cutesy’ gal in the new drama ‘过好年 Happy Family’ (debuts 19 January) is already a breakthrough for Rui En. Taking on the role of a mother (already with a kid running around) and pregnant with a second child is another big thing for Rui En! Who can imagine she is married to a 40 years old man 陈汉伟 Chen Han Wei (who dies in a freak accident and turning into a ghost) and romancing another 40 plus years old man 彭耀顺 Adrian Pang (ditching the usual pairing of more handsome and younger dude like 黄俊雄 Elvin Ng)?

It is a complete change of image for Rui En and one that is hard to visualise.

No risk, no gain, Rui En is taking a bold step out of her territory and take on the territory of Ann, Cynthia and Yvonne. Will Rui En succeed? Will Rui En kiss ‘goodbye’ to any more youthful looking lead roles now that she is ‘promoted’?

2010 marks the year we are diversifying into more genres and fresh drama casting. Watch out for more surprises to come…the above drama starring Rui En, Chen Han Wei and Adrian Pang is tentatively titled as ‘I’m With You’ and will debut in May 2010.
