Princesses-in-Waiting Rise Through The Ranks To Become Bona Fide Princesses!

With the departure of princesses Felicia Chin and Jesseca Liu, Zhou Ying, Paige Chua, Eelyn Kok and Tiffany Leong now take their places as the new Princesses of Caldecott Hill, joining Jeanette Aw, Rui En and Joanne Peh. First time lucky? Maybe.

Here’s the full list of this year’s nominees.

The Top 40 Most Popular Nominees were selected and chosen via a poll of around 1000 people (Ages 7 and above) conducted by a media research company. 50% of the votes came from the research survey, while the other 50% will come from public voting. The Top 40 nominees are now at our press conference to pick their telepoll numbers as you read this and we’ll update the telepoll numbers on this post shortly. Voting lines open today at 11am and will close 24 April, 9pm.

The results of the Top 40 will be revealed during the Star Awards 2011 Show 2, Sunday, 24 April, 7pm ‘LIVE’ on Channel 8.

In ‘On The Fringe 边缘父子’, Rui En plays a blind social worker “中途之家”义工，协助囚犯在出狱前适应社会，善良、乐观，虽因意外导致双目失明，却积极面对人生，从不怨声载道。她知道田一邦(Li Nanxing)当年是误入歧途才犯案，其实本人十分正直，遂不断鼓励他开创人生新篇章，并立阻田一邦被反派刘佳丽(Fann Wong)拉入黑道。

Rest will be a luxury for Rui En 瑞恩. First it was ‘A Tale of 2 Cities 乐在双城’, next comes ‘The In-Laws 麻婆斗妇’ (still shooting). Immediately after that, she jumps straight into another drama production ‘On The Fringe 边缘父子’ to be followed closely (maybe even overlapping) with the production of ‘The Righteous 正义武馆’ (she has to do kung-fu) and ending the year with the production of Unriddle 2 最火搭档2.

She will have to work very hard to differentiate the various roles (so far so good) given the unanimous vote of confidence from the various demanding Executive Producers. You either end up with audience finding it ‘too much’ of the same Rui En or you succeed in becoming the next most admired character actress after 黄碧仁 and 李锦梅…

And it is really exciting to have Fann Wong 范文芳 becoming 有情有义黑社会大姐头，内敛不外露，不怒而威，在帮派头目死后，接手管理众弟兄，但面对“内忧外患”，问题重重，深陷危机，这时更发现自己有孕在身。她知道田一邦(Li Nanxing) 重情重义，设法拉拢他。。。

Everybody loves Li Nanxing 李南星 – the Ah Ge of all Ah Ge. He became a household name when he first acted in ‘On The Fringe 边缘少年’ decades ago…now he is back as 田一邦aka前“边缘少年”，出入感化院，后因抢劫兼严重伤人被判入狱，妻子与他离婚。话不多，冷酷，重义气，身手敏捷。出狱后发现一直未见面的儿子正步上歧途，想方设法阻止儿子走上自己的老路，父子间冲突不断。他摆脱不了黑势力，被大姐头刘佳丽拉入阵营，义工莎莎则希望把他拉出来，走回正途。

Besides Zhang Yao Dong 张耀栋 as the evil 新一代黑道老大, we also get to see a strong cast like Yao Wen Long 姚玟隆, Eelyn Kok 郭惠雯 (who is enjoying rising popularity in Malaysia now with her 理温馨亲情电视剧’The Seeds of Life 渔米人家’), Pang Ling Ling 潘玲玲, Brandon Wong 黄炯耀, Constance Song 宋怡霏, Alan Tern 唐育书, Rayson Tan 陈泰铭, Taiwanese newbie Kate Pang 庞蕾馨, Chen Tian Wen 陈天文, Chen Guo Hua 陈国华, etc.

力拼陈丽萍瑞恩

问及欧萱觉得最强的对手是哪位时，她表示自己没时间看其他4位对手陈丽萍、白薇秀、瑞恩及周颖的戏，所以并不晓得她们演得如何。她说：“因为工作时间的关系，所以我没看剧，我是听其他人说的，当中就陈丽萍及瑞恩的呼声还蛮高的。”这也是欧萱与陈丽萍第3次交手了，陈丽萍是欧萱很尊敬的演员，两人第一次合作是早年的《荷兰村》。陈丽萍的专业及待人周道让欧萱留下极佳印象，“到现在，她还把我当妹妹般的看待，我也还是会称她为大姐，她入围，我也替她高兴。”

由于欧萱近期都在大马拍剧，还没有机会碰上其他演员聊及入围的心情。而另一对手瑞恩与欧萱来自同一经纪公司，对于对手第一次入围，欧萱大方祝福对方：“虽是同一经纪公司，但我觉得还好，没什么影响的。我觉得她也努力了很久，入行应该都有8年了吧，这也是她第一次入围，终于得到了一个肯定，我觉得是值得高兴的。”

The comedian reckons it will be a tough fight between the two princesses who both have strong and big fanbases

Last year, Jeanette Aw walked home with the trophy for Most Favourite Female Character as Yao Jianhong in Together. Even Felicia Chin who raked in triple nominations for Love Blossoms (Tao Haitong), The Ultimatum (Sun Min), and Baby Bonus (Apple Hong) proved to be no match for her.

With a whittled-down list of nominees and the well-loved Felicia Chin out of the picture this year, we see a mix of actresses from drama and variety programmes standing as the final five competing for the top spot of Favourite Female Character.

This year, Zhou Ying (Tang Ying in Breakout), Michelle Chong (Xie Yu Yu in Black Rose), and Quan Yi Fong (Yao Yao in Black Rose) will be going up against two “idols” Rui En (Yang Xiao Dong in Happy Family) and Jeanette Aw (Yang Nianqing in Breakout), of which both command astronomical fanbases in Singapore.

Think of this as a high school popularity contest with the outcome purely determined by online votes.

Unlike the professionally judged categories, fans and viewers will have a say in the overall outcome for these Online Award categories. Once a day, the public can vote online for their favourite male and female characters, favourite on-screen couple, and their favourite on-screen partners in variety programmes.

It’s no surprise to see versatile comedian and actress Michelle Chong grab her first nomination in the favourite female character category as her popularity has been on the upswing following a bountiful 2010 and the return of Ch5’s The Noose in March.

Michelle landed her first big break in a Ch8 drama series, Mrs P.I last year and bagged two nominations for Best Comedy performance in 2010’s Asian Television Awards.

“Honoured and very happy” to be voted amongst the “idols” (Rui En and Jeanette), Michelle was pleasantly surprised when informed of her nomination in the online category. Despite that, the actress firmly believes that she stands a slim or no chance at taking home the award.

“It’s very different because that’s drama and I’m nominated for my work in variety. I don’t think the variety people stand a chance.

“I think Rui En stands a big chance ‘cos she has a very strong fanbase. Jeanette stands a chance too because this role in Breakout was much talked about. She put a lot of work into the character,” she adds.

In any case, with the voting power entirely in the public’s hands, one can never be too sure.

If you don’t do so well this time, just work harder next year…and one day, your hard work will pay off (Rui En worked for 10 years before her first nomination this year)…
