Once again, C.L.I.F. 4 will feature Rui En and Elvin Ng as they are appearing for the third time in the drama series. Police Life spoke to them to uncover their thoughts on the Force and their roles.

Rui En

Starring as Ng Tze Keat, Officer-in-Charge of Special Investigation Section (SIS)

“I have much respect for members of the SPF for they choose to dedicate their lives to the country.”

Appearing for the third time, Rui En shared with us about how great it felt to be back. “Police roles will always be very close and very dear to my heart. I am just so looking forward to it,” she explained. What is new for season 4 is that Rui En will be portraying a working mother. “I am a mum in the show, so that is going to be a bit of a challenge for me (laughs)… there would be upcoming challenges while working with the baby, but I am going to do my best” she assured. As an officer-in-charge in SIS, Rui En’s character in C.L.I.F. 4 will highlight how mothers within the Force juggle between family commitments and work responsibilities.

4. Interview with C.L.I.F. 4 Executive Producer Page 11

When you started filming C.L.I.F. 4, what objectives did you have in mind?

I wanted to humanise the characters in C.L.I.F. 4 by including lots of real life cases and issues that the Police face daily in performing their duties. Thus, we featured many cases based on real stories, and also included aspects of life that Police officers have to cope with. For example, Rui En had a family in C.L.I.F. 4, and she had to learn how to maintain a work-life balance. This is an issue that is not unique to Police officer which we wanted to bring out. I believe C.L.I.F. 4 has achieved the objective I had in mind.

What stands out in C.L.I.F. 4 that audience can look forward to?

How did our Police officers fare in acting?

Do you think C.L.I.F. 4 was successful in portraying the realities Police officers faced every day?

Most citizens already know how to differentiate right from wrong, and what they should be doing and what they should not be doing. However, the focus I had in mind was to show that Police officers and human beings too. We wanted to show the perseverance and intelligence that the Police officers needed to have to solve cases. We also wanted to show how they had to achieve work-life balance, especially for Rui En and Li Nan Xing. They now have a family in the series, so their attention is split between work and family. We wanted to explore all these things and resolve it.

Which scene was the most unforgettable for you?

It would have to be the airport chase-scene.

Getting to Know C.L.I.F. 2

The outstanding achievement of the C.L.I.F. drama serial in 2011 has led itself to the production of C.L.I.F. 2!

C.L.I.F. 2 is based on a composite of true crime files, revolving around the work of investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Tanglin Police Division.

Police investigators fathom complex cases through their nimble minds, collective thinking, dedication and intuition, assisted by forensics and technology. They race against time to rescue lives and solve cold-blooded murders, all the while unyielding in their resolve to uphold the core values of the Singapore Police Force.

Before its debut on MediaCorp Channel 8 on 18 February 2013, familiarise yourself with the cast of C.L.I.F. 2!

Huang Zhijie

Rui En as Senior Station Inspector Huang Zhijie
Office-in-Charge Team C
Special Investigation Section
Criminal Investigation Department

Huang Zhijie went through a troubling childhood during which she saw her elder sister being abducted. Her sister was eventually murdered after being sexually assaulted. The culprits got away scot-free due to insufficient evidence, which scarred her.

Due to her experience as a child, Zhijie once lost faith in humanity. She studied psychology in school, she wanted to better understand human behaviour. This later pays off as she can emphatise with victims and communicate with them on a deeper level. Together with her resolve to uphold justice, she solves numerous cases.

Zhijie is close friends with police academy buddy Wei Lantian. The two develop a deeper relationship subconsciously.

She later meets a stumbling block when investigating a sexual assault and murder case, and has to learn to let go of things she cannot control. She leads Lantian and herself into trouble when she enters a battle of wits with the suspect.

Diary of the C.L.I.F. 2 Learning Journey

Before the cameras rolled for C.L.I.F. 2, the MediaCorp artistes went through a series of training sessions coordinated by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to let them portray their characters realistically. Here are what they have to say about their experiences.

Rui En

The thing I was really enjoying and had a lot of interest in was the Police Defence Tactics…I never thought it was actually done that way – you would think it would take a lot of strength or a lot of brute force to be able to disable someone but actually it’s not. And I thought it was really clever.

Living the Drama

Forested area in Sembawang

Senior Station Inspector (SSI) Huang Zhijie (played by Rui En) investigated a gruesome case of a highly decomposed corpse in a forest.

In face, the recent season of Crimewatch featured a case that took place in this very same forest along Jalan Semilang on 11 April 2009. A taxi driver was killed during a robbery and his decomposed body was only discovered in this forest days later.

Forested area behind the Senior Police Officers’ Mess

In the forested area right behind this building, movie magic did its work and transformed the forest into a spine-chilling crime scene where SSI Huang and her team would bring the accused to reconstruct the crime scene.

Lim Chu Kang Jetty

Towards the end of the series, you can anticipate an adrenaline-pumped action sequence filmed at this scenic site located at the end of Lim Chu Kang road.

You may even spot the Police Coast Guard (PCG)’s PC-class boats berthed at PCG Lim Chu Kang base which is located next to the jetty. This base is one of the four PCG bases around the island, with three others in Loyang, Gul and Brani.

C.L.I.F. 2 Special: Behind the Scenes

C.L.I.F. 2 will continue to feature actual Police facilities and officers to give members of the public the closest look into policing work. But things on screen are often larger than life – so what is real and what has been lost in the translation to screen? Police Life speaks to two of the characters’ real life counterparts to find out.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jessica Ang, Senior Investigation Officer in the Special Investigation Section (SIS), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) plays a similar character in the drama. Her screen persona is Nico, a SIS Investigation Officer (IO) supervised by Senior Station Inspector Ng Tze Keat, played by actress Rui En.

Their scenes will provide insights into some of the major crimes such as murder and kidnapping that the SIS handles.
