Rui En will play a wife and mother for the first time

This makes Rui En the first among the Seven Princesses to leave the castle and move on to playing mature roles.

Yes, we know she is the cool, strong-willed and unconventional one among the Jeanette Aws, Joanne Pehs and Felicia Chins.

This career move will certainly differentiate her even more from her ‘royal’ peers, who are still playing young single girls.

We wondered if the decision was deliberate. Why take such a big leap forward, Rui En?

‘Why not?’ she shot back.

‘I think it’s good to have something fresh. It’s a huge risk, but without risks, you can’t move forward.’

Then she laughed and added, as she leaned forward to squeeze this reporter’s arm, ‘Eh, I’m 29 years old this year!’

Turning serious, the 1.69m-tall actress – whose previous roles in The Dream Catchers and My School Daze saw her tackling mostly strong, independent and highly educated single girls – said: ‘I can’t pretend to be a teenager or a teenybopper any more. I’m also not about to start lying about my age. As I grow up, the characters I take on have to grow up as well.’

And how they will grow.

Next project

In Rui En’s next project, tentatively titled I’m With You, she will play a wife and mother for the first time.

It is supposedly a very dark drama, where a succession of tragedies befalls her character Siqi – one of which is the sudden death of her husband (Chen Hanwei) in the first episode.

His spirit, however, lingers in the human world and pesters Adrian Pang’s character, the only person who can see and talk to him, to help his family get over his death.

You can expect some flutterings of romance between Rui En’s character and Adrian’s, but nothing too much for a recently-widowed woman.

Rui En will begin filming the drama later this month.

Although wading into new territory makes her jittery, and it is way out of her comfort zone, she says she is looking forward to it.

But if you have a mental picture of Rui En as a frumpy aunty in I’m With You, think again.

Her character Siqi is a fashion designer in her early 30s and a modern mother.

Rui En nevertheless cringed a little when she described what her alter ego will look like.

‘She’s quite feminine and always wears skirts. I also have to wear hair extensions to make my shoulder-length hair longer. It’s been a long time since I had that image,’ she said.

But isn’t she concerned that there’ll be no turning back to playing young-ish characters once she’s stepped into mature roles, currently hogged by 30-something actresses like Cynthia Koh and Ann Kok? (See report, right.)

Rui En pondered for a while before saying: ‘I’m honestly not worried about this yet. I hope that I perform sufficiently well to prove to people that I can play a role like Xiaodong and also a mother. I have to rely on myself to prove it.’

Xiaodong is her uneducated, simple-minded and happy-go-lucky character from the Channel 8 drama Happy Family, which premieres at 9pm on 19 Jan.

In that role, which was filmed from August to October last year, the usually aloof Rui En replaces her trademark don’t-mess-with-me attitude with a wide toothy grin.

Even her co-stars joked that she smiled more in those three months of filming Happy Family than she usually would in a year.

However, there’s one other role that this reporter hopes to see her take on, one that’s certainly out of her comfort zone.

How about playing a damsel in distress, I asked her. It is so unlike the self-reliant and strong actress.

‘Can I?’ she asked incredulously, breaking off into laughter.

‘Okay, that would be quite challenging. Hmm, I do have something in me that’s quite independent because that’s the way I grew up and lived my entire life.’

Take note, scriptwriters.

Remus’ comment on Rui En’s well-known abstinence from doing intimate scenes has apparently caused a rift between the two stars in an upcoming Ch 8 drama

With a title like Happy Family, all does not seem particular joyful between the two leads of Channel 8’s upcoming Lunar New Year drama.

And it seems it all came down to a comment Malaysian actor Remus Kam made about local starlet Rui En’s well-known ascetical stance on doing intimate scenes.

The 33-year-old only learnt about it when he touched down in Singapore to film the show and previously said in an interview that it wasn’t a pity he could not kiss the actress.

“It is not a big deal because my lips have been kissed by many other female stars,” he nonchalantly declared back then.

At the drama’s press conference at Meritus Mandarin last Wednesday, Remus reiterated the very same phrase.

But this time, his co-star was seated next to him, and Rui-En’s expression gave away the fact that his words had put her nose out of joint.

When the 29-year-old actress was later asked to comment in a separate interview, it was obvious her feathers had been ruffled.

“He said wrongly,” was her short but cold reply through a forced smile.

After a couple more probing from journalists, her inner PR machine finally relented. She rolled her eyes, and uttered curtly, “Not like I’m very excited to kiss him. Got better choices.”

We figured she isn’t interested in kissing him anyway.

Throughout their solo interviews, both Rui-En and Remus gave contrary accounts of their filming experience together.

Remus cheekily revealed that he once faked that he was going to kiss Rui En during filming, and said that the actress was “shocked at that moment. She thought I was really going to kiss her.”

Rui En, on the other hand, countered his remark by stating that she wasn’t shocked at all. “No lah, that did not happen. We both knew it beforehand.”

Remus also admitted that they talked very little when the camera isn’t rolling but was also quick to correct himself (politically, that is) to dispel rumours that the two of them could not see eye-to-eye.

“What I meant was, the least kissed mouth is the most valuable, therefore mine is not,” he tried clarifying.

He even went as far to say that they had nothing to clear between each other.

Remus, who has starred in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore-Malaysia co-productions, is not new to controversy with his female counterparts. He was once linked romantically to sex icon and Taiwanese drama The Pawnshop No. 8’s co-star Tian Xin, who famously remarked his name is not fit to be placed beside hers.

We’re no prophets but we predict this might be the first and last time he and Caldecott Hill’s resident ice queen will star opposite each other.

In Happy Family, Rui En plays dimwitted Xiaodong, the foster granddaughter of Jianye (Chen Shucheng), who is estranged from his three children (Chen Tianwen, Darren Lim, Ann Kok). One day, a young Japanese man (Remus) appears, revealing himself to be the old man’s biological grandson. Together with Xiaodong, they set off to reunite the family.

The Lunar New Year serial comes after the success of Reunion Dinner a year ago. It also stars Pan Lingling and Cynthia Koh.

看过宣传短片后, 我心想: 为何取名<过好年>呢? 戏理的人物多数哭比笑还要多呢! 但俗话说, 家家有本难念的经, 雨后才会有彩虹, 董家也不例外. 董家的纠纷是否能化解,一家人团聚过好年呢?
The first thing that struck me after watching the preview was: Isn’t it an irony to name the TV series “Happy Family” when the show in fact highlights the struggles of a family? But as the Chinese saying goes, “Every family has its own set of problems and struggles”, how true for the Dong family. Will the Dongs manage to overcome all odds and emerge as a happy family before the Lunar New Year?

故事简介Synopsis

董建业(陈澍城饰演)是戏里的一家之主. 他有三个孩子, 金星 (陈天文饰演), 木星 (林明伦饰演)与水星 (郭舒贤饰演), 但他却陆陆续续的把他们赶走. 金星因被父亲诬赖害死母亲而离去; 木星为了不要被父亲看不起而发誓要出人头地才回家; 水星因17当上未婚妈妈而被父亲打瘸了, 不得不离家. 幸亏他在几年后领养了孤儿,杨小冬 (瑞恩饰演).
The Dong family is headed by Dong Jian Ye (played by Chen Shu Cheng). He has three children, Jin Xing (played by Chen Tian Wen), Mu Xing (played by Darren Lim) and Shui Xing (played by Ann Kok), all of which were driven out of house 17 years ago. Jin Xing left after being accused of causing the death of his mother; Mu Xing vowed never to return until he made a name for himself; Shui Xing was forced to leave after she got pregnant at 17 and was beaten till lame by her father. After his children left, Jian Ye adopted Yang Xiao Dong (played by Rui En), daughter of a neighbour who was killed in a fire, as his granddaughter.

小冬是个单纯善良的女孩. 因母亲早年过逝, 父亲抛弃而被邻居,建业,领养. 她偶然间认识野口菜子 (金沛晟饰演), 金星的继子. 相处多日,她在不知不觉中对这个陌生人产生了感情…

After suffering a stroke, Jian Ye’s dying wish is to take a family portrait again. Thus, Xiao Dong and Nariyasu embark on a search for his children with the intention to reunite the family and fulfill Jian Ye’s wish. Will they succeed?

一句“跟瑞恩没有接吻戏，不可惜”惹风波？马国小生金沛晟和本地“酷公主”瑞恩交恶？！

新传媒8频道贺岁剧《过好年》昨日举行记者会，男女主角金沛晟和瑞恩因为新动网早前的一篇独家报道，竟发生“口角”，瑞恩还当众“指责”金沛晟“讲错话”。

新动网早前独家专访金沛晟时，他透露，监制袁树伟告诉他，吻戏拍不成，因为瑞恩一向不拍亲热戏。他当时搞笑说：“跟瑞恩没有接吻戏，不可惜啊！就算她没得跟我接吻也没什么大不了，因为我的嘴唇吻过很多女星了！哈哈！”

瑞恩：我又不是很兴奋要吻他

昨天记者会上，金沛晟重提此事，难掩不悦表情的瑞恩当众回应：“他讲错话吧！”

但，为免气氛尴尬，她马上补充：“我们拍戏时的默契不错，他反应很快。”

瑞恩之后接受新动网专访，针对金沛晟重提她不拍亲热戏，她表示：“真的不希望每次都强调这个。”

而对方“跟瑞恩没有接吻戏，不可惜”这番话，瑞恩脸带微笑告诉记者：“他说错话，我会原谅他的！”

记者追问，如果金沛晟是当真的呢，瑞恩露出一脸无所谓回答：“随便啦！Not that I’m very excited kissing him. I’ve got better choices!（我又不是很兴奋要吻他。我有更好的选择！）”

虽然语气带有开玩笑的意思，不过，却不禁令人感觉瑞恩似乎对金沛晟有些许不满。

但，她仍然称赞对方反应极快，二人在演戏互动上，默契不错，比如，她临场做出的一些演绎方式，对方都能及时做出理想反应。

而且，瑞恩重申，她一向和合作演员私下没有交流，所以谈不上跟谁不和、或特别投缘。因为公私分明，所以她绝对不可能与男主角日久生情。她也即将为新剧《我在你左右》开工，饰演陈汉玮的老婆，还育有一名7岁女儿。

金沛晟：瑞恩误解我的意思

另一方面，新动网记者昨日再度访问金沛晟，他解释：“相信瑞恩误解我的意思了。其实，我的意思是，我吻过这么多女艺人，我的嘴唇没什么特别，她不亲我也是好事！”

他表示，在记者会上重提瑞恩不拍亲热戏，只是为了开玩笑搞气氛，他否认，两人因此交恶。至于会否向当事人解释，他回答：“不会！她对我有什么印象，早在拍戏的时候，就有了，不会因为这样而改变。”
