The good, the bad and the what-the-hell-is-that?
Grey matter: We know Favourite Female Character winner Rui En loves her pantsuits and this Hermes ensemble is a class above them all. Extra points for that kinky leather belt around her neck.

If this is a dream, we know a few people who wouldn’t want to wake up. Joanne Peh, for one, was a big winner, edging out experienced Ah Ges such as Mark Lee and Bryan Wong to bag the Best Info-Ed Programme Host award. Of course, she also made it to the Top 10 Most Popular list. Never mind that she didn’t win Best Actress lah- one cannot be too greedy, right? That accolade went to Rui En, who also won big, bagging the hotly-contested acting prize, along with Top 10 popularity trophy. However, she looked somewhat less thrilled than Miss Peh. While she seemed genuinely surprised when her name was called, she barely managed a smile on stage. C’mon, Rui En, let that too-cool exterior crack a little. It’s Star Awards night, after all.

(Cow)hide and seek: RUI EN without her pantsuits is like Sue Sylvester without her tracksuits. Even though this all-leather Hermes dress has edge, the Best Actress winner loses her mojo looking demure – and depressed-swathed in this body bag.

She promised us “a surprise” two Sundays ago and what a pleasant surprise we got when this Best Actress 2011 winner stepped out in a black floor-length leather dress from Hermes.
While it was a refreshing change from her usual pantsuits and androgynous styling — baby steps people, baby steps — Rui En stayed true to herself with her choice that night. The lass’s love for leather clearly amplified, it was a perfect fit for the starlet’s cool character.

All the acting honours at this year’s Star Awards went to first-time winners.
China-born star Qi Yuwu won Best Actor for playing a roguish lawyer in legal drama The Family Court and local girl Rui En took home the Best Actress trophy for her role of a grieving widow in With You.
While Best Actress Rui En, 30, appeared composed, her frequent small smiles clearly revealed how happy she was. She said: ” I’ve never taken anything for granted and I only want to act even though there were times where i would hear things like the media telling me that I’m not suited for this industry.”
She was referring to the fact that she has a reputation for not playing the public relations game and for being forthright and unconventional.
Her win crowned a triumphant 2010: She starred in three of last year’s top five dramas on Channel 8 – With You, Happy Family and Unriddle.
Her feminine side was on show with a Hermes black dress, a deviation from the usual menswear-inspired outfits she had worn in past years to the Star Awards.
“I feel most comfortable in men’s clothes but I was in a mood for a dress and I’m sure everyone is tired of me looking the same. Besides, I’ve had a lot of breakthroughs in the previous years, so I thought, why not?” She explained.

SINGAPORE: Singapore actress Rui En beat contenders like Chen Li Ping and Jeanette Aw to win the Best Actress award for her performance in the drama “With You”, during the Star Awards 2011 Show 2 held at the Resorts World Convention Centre on Sunday night.
“When I was sitting there [in the audience], I kept telling myself I won’t have to go on stage, because I don’t really like speaking on stage, I feel very awkward and unsuitable for this.
“I didn’t think I would win!” said Rui En, who thanked her fans and her boss for sticking by her through the low points in her career.
“At that time (a low point in her career), my boss was very supportive of me. He kept encouraging me and never gave up on me. I am grateful.”
Although Rui En was pleasantly surprised to win the Best Actress award and Top 10 Favourite Female Artistes award on Sunday, the 30-year-old actress expressed that winning the awards would not affect her attitude towards work very much.
“Whether I win or not, tomorrow I will still have to go to work … it (her wins) just makes the pressure greater,” said Rui En earnestly, before revealing that she has an early day on Monday and will head to Malaysia for a shoot very soon.

Highly-lauded for their stellar performances in their respective dramas, both Qi Yu Wu and Rui En brought home the coveted trophies for Best Actor and Best Actress at Star Awards 2011

It was a first-time win for both Qi Yu Wu and Rui En last night (April 24) in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories since their showbiz debut more than a decade ago.
Speaking in a backstage interview with xinmsn, Rui En was still “in a daze” and had a hard time trying to compose her thoughts. She admitted that she never saw this Best Actress award coming her way and felt “weird” going onstage to receive her “first acting award” for her heart-wrenching turn as a widow in With You.
“I had a feeling that I wouldn’t win this award. But this just proves that my feeling is wrong,” Rui En shyly grinned, clearly still in shock at her win.
With an acting career peppered with “lows more than highs”, the actress who was decked head-to-toe in Hermes gave a shout out of thanks to her boss, for encouraging, supporting, and never giving up on her during her “low periods”.

For someone who feels “comfortable” during the low-points of her career, she chuckled and shared of her antsy feelings when they announced her name.
“I was hoping I don’t have to go onstage to receive the award. I don’t like to speak onstage,” she laughingly revealed.
While she’s “not used” to her win yet, the versatile artiste reiterated that she “just wants to act” and added, “I want to make sure that I focus on the right thing. I don’t like to focus on awards. That focus is wrong.”

Instead of bagging trophies and winning awards, the actress who was “in the mood for a dress” yesterday night, shared that recognition to her is when “aunties and uncles come up to me and tell me they enjoyed my show.”
“That is the most direct form of recognition that is personal and intimate,” she surmised.

Highly-tipped to be a hot favourite candidate for the Best Actress award category for Star Awards 2011, though Jeanette Aw might have missed out bagging the coveted trophy, the cheery lass is no sore loser.
In backstage interview with xinmsn, she earnestly congratulated Rui En for her win and shared that the latter was a deserving winner of the Best Actress award.
Decked in a cute white Loewe frock, her second outfit for the night, the Breakout actress honestly admitted that she “felt a little disappointed” at her no-win, but was quick to pump her fist and add that she will “keep on fighting”.
“Speaking of hot favourites, I was also the hot favourite [for Best Actress award] the past few years but ended up empty-handed. But that’s okay. I will continue working hard, that’s the most important.”
