Singapore actress Rui En talks about putting in 16-hour days while shooting her new drama “Sudden” and taking her first break from showbiz in years, after the show wrapped. Just what will she do with her time? Read on to find out.

Singapore actress Rui En was especially cheerful during a recent media conference for her new drama “Sudden”, about the lives of a group of lawyers.

After putting in 16-hour days shooting “Sudden”, Rui En will be taking a break from showbiz till she begins working on “C.L.I.F.3” in November – her first break in years.

And just what will she do during her break? Tour Europe? Go on a shopping spree?

“I like to stay alone at home,” said Rui En happily.

“After you’ve been out filming 16-hour days, non-stop, all you want to do is to be at home.”

“Staying home for days at a time is like heaven to me. People are like ‘Is that enough?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, more than enough!’”

For Rui En, the next few months will be all about enjoying the simple pleasures in life.

“The smallest things give me the biggest joys.

“The most straightforward things like a good book, a good cup of coffee and Sunday mornings,” said Rui En.

Her break is the perfect chance to put a dent in her massive reading list, though it would take more than a few months to get through all the books she has amassed in her home over the years.

“I got a million books! I have got so many books. It’s all over the place. I’ve been buying, buying and buying.

“I have so many that I don’t think I can finish within this break,” said Rui En, smiling.

Atypical Romance

Although shooting for “Sudden” had been “stressful” and took place at a breakneck pace, Rui En said she still found it enjoyable to work on the 20-parter.

She said that “Sudden” has an especially well-written script which focuses on the more mature sort of romantic relationship which exists between her character Cheng Chuning and co-star Romeo Tan’s Fang Qiliang.

In the show, Cheng is devoted to Fang even though he is crippled in a car accident, and tries to push her away.

She described their relationship as being “more realistic” than the typical drama storyline of “boy meets girl, love triangle, break up, reunion and happily ever after”.

“I liked that it started with a long-term relationship, where everything seems to be going smoothly … and then this car accident happens.

“And how these two people manage to hold on to this relationship, even though there are so many things that are trying to tear them apart,” said Rui En.

“It’s very touching.”

Premiering next week, upcoming lawyer-themed drama Sudden 《骤变》features a star-studded cast including Rui En, Romeo Tan, Rebecca Lim and Ian Fang.

Sudden also features beautiful sceneries and lush greenery which were shot in Tasmania, Australia. The main leads Romeo Tan and Rui En shot a couple of romantic scenes at places such as Mt Nelson, Hobart and even at Curringa Farm where Tan proposed to her among a herd of sheep. The emcee asked if it was romantic or ‘smelly’, Rui En chose the latter, which brought much laughter to the other cast members. Tan on the other hand felt it was an ideal and lovely place to pop the question.

“If I am a girl, I’ll definitely say yes, confirm!” he joked.

Scared and afraid were initial thoughts that came to mind when Tan first heard the news about his first leading role, and being paired with Rui En. He mentioned that he was thankful for Rui En to organise a meet-up before filming began to ‘talk about it’.

“I suspected he (Tan) would be rather nervous and it will be better if we discussed about the roles before shooting commenced,” Rui En who plays his love interest, Cheng Chuning said.

Besides picturesque scenes and complicated love stories, most of the cast members agreed that the script was well-written and definitely worth a watch!

Sudden stars Rui En, Romeo Tan, Rebecca Lim, Zhang Zhen Huan, Ian Fang, Sora Ma, Yuan Shuai, Guo Liang and Constance Song, premiering 2 September, 9pm on Channel 8.

Singapore actor Romeo Tan opens up about his nightmarish experience as a first-time leading man in the drama “Sudden”, and his ‘romantic getaway’ with his co-star Rui En.

It was a dream come true for Singapore actor Romeo Tan.

He finally snagged his first lead role as the righteous yet troubled lawyer Fang Qiliang in the upcoming drama “Sudden”, and he was overjoyed about it.

But the dream turned into a nightmare for the 28-year-old actor, who found himself struggling to survive while shooting the drama about the lives of a group of lawyers.

Tan had to shoot back-to-back courtroom scenes for two weeks while working on “Sudden”, spending as much as 15 hours in front of the camera on some days.

It left him drained both physically and mentally, until things came to a head during the final days of the courtroom shoots.

He even started questioning if this marked the end of his acting career. Would anyone still use a lead actor who chokes?

The kindness of strangers

Tan revealed that he only managed to get through this challenging period with the help of his understanding directors, who broke down each scene for him and walked him through it.

His co-star Rui En, who played his character’s love interest Cheng Chuning in the drama, had also been a huge help, giving him advice and encouragement in his darkest hour.

“She helped me a lot. If she didn’t help me, I think I would’ve just died,” said Tan before going on to reveal that working on “Sudden” together had allowed him to get to know the real Rui En.

“We are not strangers any more. I find her very down to earth. She is not that ‘icy cold queen’. She just doesn’t like to mingle around,” gushed Tan.

“She never gave me any attitude. When you know her … she is quite a crazy girl inside. She can joke and laugh like crazy! She is not so uptight.”

Apart from gaining a friend, Tan expressed that working on “Sudden” had helped him mature as an actor.

The scent of Romance

Tan described “Sudden” as being a “very memorable” project, not only because of the challenging time he had shooting the courtroom scenes, but also because it is his first project which called for an overseas shoot.

Tan and Rui En spent eleven days shooting scenes for “Sudden” in Tasmania.

“The scenery was so beautiful it’s ridiculous!

“We had this scene where Qiliang asked Chuning to be his girlfriend while they were surrounded by sheep in a big field there.”

“It was so romantic! If I am a girl, I’d have said ‘yes’ immediately!” said Tan.

However, Rui En remembers things quite differently.

“It was smelly!” said Rui En, as she wrinkled her nose, pointing out that the smell of sheep and that of the dung they produced was quite overpowering, when they shot the scene.

“It is not as romantic in real life.”

“It looks nice, but that’s only because you don’t smell it on [television]!”

Fang Qiliang feels a rush of blood to his head followed by a splitting pain. He attempts to open his eyes and in his daze, he sees blurry wisps of smoke floating like fine snowflakes. He finds himself strapped tightly in the overturned car by the seat belt after a major hit by a huge lorry.

Cheng Chuning searches for Qiliang frantically. She spots Qiliang beside the badly damaged vehicle. Many cars have stopped to assess the accident while some drivers pick up their mobile phones dialling for help.

In this chaotic sight, Chuning races towards Qiliang’s car anxiously and fears for the worst. Is she about to lose the man she loves most?

Qiliang finds out that the accident that he was involved in is not entirely a coincidence. It has been carefully crafted to make it look like one. A new murder weapon surfaces and the case is re-opened. One of the witnesses points out that a will was found at the crime scene.

Upon further investigation, Qiliang and Chuning realise that it was not a murder but a suicide after all.

As Chuning’s memory loss continues to deteriorate, Qiliang will unavoidably be forgotten by her. Not wanting to burden Qiliang with a lifetime of responsibility, she eventually chooses one way to free him.

With one obstacle after another, will their love for each other be able to last till the end?

启亮查到当年的交通意外，似乎不是单纯的一宗意外事件，而是有人在背后策划一切。接着，命案的凶器出现，导致一年前的命案重新被调查。

启亮和楚宁追查下，发现其实整个命案并非谋杀，而是自杀。案情急转直下，到底谁是凶手？

楚宁因为病情日渐严重，想到自己最终将无可避免的忘怀启亮，让她纠结不已，不想启亮背负照顾她一辈子的责任。最后，她选择了一个方法来减轻启亮的痛苦…

他们一波三折的情感路上，到最后是否能走在一起呢？
