Of love letters and love lives

“Sometimes 50 of us (from my extended family) go karaoke, it’s very fun. I also like to go Chinatown with my family during CNY and just bask in the atmosphere. As for the questions about my love life, I do “tai chi”, saying, ‘Oh I cannot decide between Rui En and Jeanette Aw.’”

– Elvin Ng uses his on-screen love interests’ names in vain during CNY

RBKD: In Life is Beautiful, Rui En plays main the protagonist Chuyi, a happy-go-lucky, selfless ingenue whose life is affected by illness. When asked which cartoon character Chuyi resembled the most, she replied Dora The Explorer. She finds playing it cute is much harder than it looks as she does not want to overdo it.

Rui En finds it a huge relief to be in Life is Beautiful right after filming Against The Tide as it would be too depressing for her to have two intense roles back-to-back.

RBKD: Rui En plays a kidney patient, Shen Chuyi in Life is Beautiful, who is given a second chance of life after undergoing a successful kidney transplant operation. In the show, she can be seen rattling off calorie-related figures which she finds it a challenge to remember the lines and numbers. Nonetheless, that’s also the beauty of the character as that’s her way of showing her love.

Rui En finds it a huge relief and great joy to act in Life is Beautiful after filming Against The Tide as Chuyi, a happy-go-lucky kidney patient is the complete opposite with Qiu Xueqing.

Apart from the joy working with her co-stars, it was also a sobering experience for Rui En when she visited the NKF Dialysis Centre. Speaking to kidney patients as part of her preparation for the role was an eye-opener in many ways.

Another meaningful aspect of working on a projects like Life is Beautiful and and C.L.I.F. would be the career reaffirmation she gets from educating the public via her roles.

When asked what would Rui En do if she is given a second chance in life, she replied that she’d be less selfish and try her best every day to be a better person.

10 Questions with Rui En

The perennially popular MediaCorp actress and face of cosmetics giant L’Oreal shares her outlook on change, her career and what’s up in the new year.

Did you manage to stick to 2014’s new year resolution (what was it?) and what’s your resolution for 2015?

I never make new year’s resolutions. I just try to be a better person every day, one step at a time.

What’s your worst habit or character trait that you would like to change?

Procrastination.

You’ve recently starred in your first baddie role in Against The Tide. What’s the next step in pushing the envelope?

I would love to say otherwise but complex roles for females are extremely rare in Singapore. I would jump at any chance to try anything I have never done before.

Your profession is all about change. How do you plan to reinvent yourself in the coming year?

Reinvention just for the sake of it is ultimately futile. Reinvention should be a natural progress as an artiste matures.

You’ve focused most of your time on acting so far. Is singing something you would like to do more of in the future? Which gives you more satisfaction?

I’d love to do both at the same time. They are two very different art forms and give different kinds of satisfaction.

Describe your fashion style. Is your taste constantly evolving or do you have a more or less fixed look that you stick to?

It’s constantly evolving. In my daily life off-screen, I am highly mood driven. Sometimes I’ll feel like wearing a dress or putting on red lipstick. Other times I stick religiously to the Singaporean uniform – tees, shorts and slippers. Singaporean and proud.

Which city/country do you most want to visit this year?

I would like to explore Europe more.

What new skill/hobby do you hope to learn and why?

Art appreciation and history. I simply just fell in love with Monet and Michelangelo.

If your slate for the entire year is suddenly cleared, what’s the first few things you would want to do?

Make travel plans.

RBKD: Besides the nomination list, 8 Days listed 5 main areas to note including Joanne Peh’s double nominations which was unexpected to them. They wondered if she might pull a Judi Dench stunt for “Shakespeare in Love” whereby the latter won an Oscars for a mere nine minutes’ performance.
