The annual Asian TV Awards, in its 19th edition this year, celebrates excellence in TV production and performance in programmes across Asia.
Nabbing the Best Actress award was adorable Malaysian child star Puteri Balqis Azizi, seven, who won for the Malay telemovie Balqis. She beat fellow nominees such as Taiwanese actress Tien Hsin, China-born American actress Joan Chen and Singapore’s Rui En.
Acting since the age of two, Puteri said sweetly that winning was “unbelievable”, which prompted everyone in the audience to coo and laugh.

After nearly 10 years of self-imposed exile away from the television lights, the revitalised National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is ready to step back into the limelight.
With rising demand for its service, in March next year, the organisation will be launching a 20-episode Channel 8 serial featuring Rui En, Dasmond Koh and Pierre Png.
This is a different approach to the glitzy television fund-raisers of the past, chairman Koh Poh Tiong told The Sunday Times in a recent interview.
Its aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle, with Rui En playing a kidney failure patient who picks herself up.

It’s her first time acting opposite Christopher Lee in her 12 years in showbiz. And home-grown actress Rui En has a “score” to settle with him.
At a press conference yesterday for Against The Tide, the 33-year-old star, who is known for being fiercely private, “complained” to local media about Lee’s acts of “sabotage”.
She laughed and said jokingly: “I wasn’t very happy filming with you, okay?
“Everytime I go to a hawker centre to buy food, Christopher would tell everyone where I was, shouting:’Rui En is over there! Go there if you want to take photos with her!’
“I am very low-profile and I don’t like it.”
In the new show, Rui plays a good psychiatrist who turns evil in the end, a role she has never attempted in the past.
On Lee’s teasing, Rui clarified that she would be fine if strangers approached her on their own to take photos with her, but she did not want to draw unnecessary attention in public.
Even though she had “complaints” against Lee, she said that Lee had never crossed the line on set.
“Christopher likes to fool around, but he wouldn’t dare to make me angry,” she said.
“Every time he informs everyone of where I am in public, I’d feel annoyed and keep hitting him.”
Unlike many young stars these days, Rui does not have an Instagram account and emphasises that she will not set up on soon.
She said: “I don’t like to take selfies or photos and I don’t see the need to post them online.”
“My life is very boring in the first place. If I had an Instagram account, I’d bore everyone to death with my mundane posts.”

Christopher Lee was clearly in a good mood during the press session at Goodwood Park Hotel, as he joked around with his co-stars Rui En, Desmond Tan, Carrie Wong and Xu Bin.
In the drama, he plays a mystery-crime novelist implicated in a sex and physical abuse case, and tries to clear his name by getting involved in the investigation. The suspense-thriller premieres on Channel 8 next Wednesday at 9pm.

With Singaporean TV dramas being increasingly broadcast in the region, home-grown stars are gaining popularity abroad.
At the Star Awards in April, a new award category was introduced to reflect the growing regional appeal of Singapore stars – the Most Popular Regional Artiste Award, which celebrates the stars who are the most popular in several territories.
Actress Jeanette Aw nabbed the award for Cambodia, Rui En won for Indonesia and Malaysia, while Yvonne Lim took the award for being most popular in China.

Rui En said she was not disappointed for losing to Aw in two categories of the awards as she felt the latter truly deserved to win. But Rui En managed to bag the Regional Most Popular MediaCorp Artiste awards for Indonesia and Malaysia.

Local actress Rui En has a reputation as the ice queen of Caldecott Hill.
But that standoffish persona was nowhere in sight during C.L.I.F. 3’s press conference last Friday.
The 33-year-old was chatty and cheery and she joked around with the cast on stage, prompting actress Tracy Lee to wonder if something had happened during filming to cause this difference.
Rui En said with a smile: “Many people saw the change in me and asked me if there is a man in my life now.
“But it’s really because I became a Christian right before the filming of this drama. I feel happier these days.”
She added that happiness comes with age, as she found she could let go of things more easily.
“In the past, I had this overwhelming pressure to perform well in what I do. I am still finding a way to do well in my job without giving myself pressure,” she said.
“It’s very hard, but I’m always finding ways to do that. It comes with maturity.”
In C.L.I.F. 3, Rui En reprises her role of Zhijie, an officer in charge and also the wife of fellow policeman Lantian (Li Nanxing).
Being able to act opposite Li again was an experience Rui En likened to coming home.
She said: “I’ve had a lot of chemistry with Li since the day we met. We went from not knowing each other at all to feeling really comfortable with each other. I am very lucky to have a partner like that.”
Their pairing on C.L.I.F. 2 earned her a nomination for this year’s Favourite Onscreen Couple at the Star Awards.
The star is also nominated in the same category for her roles opposite actors Qi Yuwu, in The Dream Makers, and Romeo Tan in Sudden.
She has a Best Actress nomination for her role in The Dream Makers.
Favourite Couple
Having played the female lead opposite a number of leading men, Rui En said that her favourite couple role was with Elvin Ng.
She said: “Every time I work with a different person, there is new chemistry. But if I have to choose one, it will be Elvin.
“Our own fans are very supportive of us together on-screen and it’s fun. I am surprised that ‘Ruivin’ has become a thing now.”
The term ‘Ruivin’ was coined several years ago by fans after the actors’ pairing on The Dream Catchers gained popularity.
The duo are so popular they have bagged the Favourite Onscreen Couple Award at the Star Awards two years in a row.

Xu Bin
He shot to leading-man status on television very quickly, snagging the main role of a hair salon manager in Gonna Make It (2013) only a year after his supporting role in Don’t Stop Believin’. That bad boy-turned-good role snagged him the Favourite Male Character award at the Star Awards last year.
He is now filming police drama Against The Tide, alongside fellow young hunks Aloysius Pang and Shane Pow, as well as veteran actors Christopher Lee, Rui En and Zheng Geping.

After five years of staying on the sidelines, it’s finally Chris Tong’s turn to shine.
The soft-spoken Malaysian actress and MediaCorp part-timer recently received her first nomination for the Star Awards, and it’s a meaty one.
Tong, 30, is up for Best Actress for her lead role in the Channel 8 year-end blockbuster period drama The Journey: A Voyage.
Tong said that she is under no pressure to win Best Actress because she is the underdog.
The other nominees are Caldecott Hill’s popular stars like Chen Liping (The Dream Makers), Jeanette Aw (The Dream Makers), Rebecca Lim (Sudden) and Rui En (The Dream Makers).
