RBKD: Rui En spent two days in Penang to shoot the opera scenes for The Journey: Our Homeland. That was the most difficult scene she had done but she felt that this five-minute sequence was an important one as it helped to flesh out her character Yang Mei Xue and perhaps made it easier for the audience to identify with her.
In the final instalment of The Journey trilogy, Mei Xue gets entangled in a love triangle when her boyfriend (played by Zhang Zhen Huan) suddenly returns to Singapore when she thought he had died. Even though Mei Xue found happiness with Zhang Jia (played by Shaun) but had to give up her happiness out of a sense of duty to her boyfriend. “She is representative of what women were like back then. I think that wouldn’t happen today,” said Rui En.
The Journey: Our Homeland is now airing every weekday, 9pm on Channel 8.
