She had a look on her face that threatened to turn water into ice, when she began her acceptance speech for winning a Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award on Sunday.

Was Singapore actress Rui En upset about winning?

It turned out to be all a huge joke.

“That was my true ‘black face’.

“This is me smiling. I hope people won’t mix up the two anymore,” said Rui En, as her stern expression dissolved into a warm smile moments later.

The actress explained during the post-show party that she came up with that rather unusual acceptance speech on a lark.

“I am not somebody who jokes around a lot, so I thought it would be nice and refreshing to joke about myself,” said Rui En.

“It’s basically to tell people to cut me some slack.”

To understand the joke, you’d have to look back a few days to the Star Awards 2012 Show 1 last Sunday.

After the awards, some media outlets had claimed she had been unhappy about the skits performed by Dennis Chew, Quan Yi Feng and a few other stars, which poked fun at her.

But Rui En expressed that these media outlets had blown the whole issue out of proportion.

“Actually I was fine with it (the skits).

“They (the media outlets involved) just took a picture [of me] when I wasn’t smiling, used that and just put the headline that I wasn’t happy about the jokes,” explained Rui En, with a look of resignation on her face.

However, there was no possibility of history repeating itself during the Star Awards 2012 Show 2 post-show party – Rui En was all smiles throughout the event, and gamely posed for photos with the guests.

“I feel it (winning the award) is great! I am grateful to my fans,” said Rui En happily.

Unfortunately for the actress, she will have no time to celebrate her win.

Rui En revealed that she will be busy working on the massive Channel 8 Mandarin drama “Joys of Life” alongside Taiwan star Alien Huang for the next few weeks, though the good news is she will get a well-deserved two-week break after shooting wraps in mid-May.
