And then there were four. Now that Jesseca Liu has announced her departure from MediaCorp, the original Seven Princesses of MediaCorp have dwindled down to a quartet. The burning question is: will the disintegration continue?
Remember the hubbub created in 2006 when a local magazine crowned a septet of then up-and-coming nubile actresses in vein of the Magnificent Seven — except these Seven Princesses held beguiling smiles and lithe figures, not guns and lassoes. Today, three years later, things aren’t looking so magnificent anymore. Most recently, a third Princess is continuing the trend of saying adios to the guild. So before and if it becomes an exodus, we’re taking a look back at these still-young lasses whose association with this celebrity sorority has been an integral part of their identity. Otherwise, what’s the point of this tribute piece?

5) Rui En
The rebel princess who took the path less traveled. She was first talent-spotted in the SingTel hi!Card advertisement in 2001 (remember her mad dash in the red-tanktop and jeans), and made her showbiz debut as a singer. However, fame only came a-knocking on her door after she delved into the world of local TV. In her salad days, Rui En was packaged with a girl-next-door image in drama like You Are The One and Love at 0°C. But she decided that enough was enough, stepped out of the stereotype, and became the cool cat of the litter. Now fans are bowled over by her aloof demeanour and private nature. Even when she turns down roles that demand intimate scenes or “skinship”, she has no lack of projects. She’s in a tricky situation. Should she decide to compromise on your artistic principles, you could be at risk of being labeled as sell-out. But rejecting plum roles that just so happen to come with requisite intimacy could also mean missing out on groundbreaking opportunities.
Is she next to go?: 60%. We’re not quite sure what she wants since she seems to be on crossroads of the meandering path to stardom but yet resisting the commercialism of it. Getting jaded with the industry’s fallacies ain’t the peachiest sign ever. If staying eclectic is your way of pushing boundaries, we say stick to your guns. It’s worked well for her so far.
