This year, for the first time, three major Ch 8 shows starring our biggest and brightest will be filmed entirely in Malaysia, truly Asia. You’ve probably caught the occasional Ch 8 Malaysian co-productions like The Beginning, a rehash of Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing’s Rising Expectations, remade with a mainly Malaysian cast and filmed in a Malaysian city. Then there are Ch 8 blockbusters like The Little Nyonya and Together, where the ’60s street scenes were filmed on location in Penang and Malacca. More recently, there was A Tale of 2 Cities, filmed partly in KL…though you really can’t film A Tale of 2 Cities in just one city, can you?

But this year, the move up north is starting to look like a serious commitment. Yes, only to refer to actual birds kept in cages for amusement. Which is what makes any of these towns the perfect backdrop for period dramas like Nyonya and the three upcoming Ch 8 blockbusters: Kampung Ties, where Yvonne Lim and Ann Kok are BFFs who live in a small village; Code of Honour, an Elvin Ng-Rui En martial arts school vehicle; and the tentatively-titled The Coolies’ Quarters, starring Dai Yangtian as also home to seven million Chinese viewers who, according to the head of MediaCorp Studios Malaysia, Yeo Saik Pin, are much more appreciative of our stars.

Yes, a brand new martial arts drama series ‘Code Of Honour 正义武馆’ is going to be in production really soon! Set in the 60s Singapore, the show unfolds in the Yuan Martial Arts School (元门武馆) — a prestigious, time-honoured and one of the largest school of its kind during that time.

The leader of this school 掌门人, 元振飞, is played by Zheng Ge Ping 郑各评.

Also starring in this 30-part series, we have our charming smile winner Elvin Ng (吃巧克力时间到了!). In fact, we have 2 of Elvins in this show. He is casted as a pair of twins 宋亚仔 and 元晨曦. If you realise, they have different surnames and that’s because in the show, they are separated since birth and not only do they have different surnames, they are very different persons too.

元晨曦, twin of 宋亚仔, grew up in the martial arts school and thus he was also very well skilled in martial arts. 元振飞 is his father (or so he thinks) and brought him up with great love and care. However, while he was going for a competition overseas, he met with an accident with his mother and died at such young age.

宋亚仔 is a down-to-earth and honest man. Even though a tad reserved, he is well skilled in martial arts and has a strong sense of Justice. He was separated from his twin brother and was brought up in Thailand. He was called back by his mother on her deathbed and since his return, he works and stays in a fish farm, living a very simple life. 元振飞 mistook him as his son and tried to get his assistance in saving his martial arts school.

Taking on the role of the strong rival, 欧剑锋, who wishes to see the fall of 元门武馆 is Andie Chen 陈邦鋆.

This man is a very strong martial arts exponent who will do whatever it takes to blow a hole in the prestige of 元门武馆. He will even use underhand methods to achieve his goals. Despite that, his attractive charismatic looks coupled with his great martial arts skills, he has no lack of suitors around him at all.

Playing his sister, 欧可璐, is our reigning Princess of Caldecott Hill, Rui En. I think this is a very interesting combination and for that I’m already looking forward to watch the show.

欧可璐 is lazy, self-indulgent and mischievious. She’s also the most half-hearted when it comes to training. 欧剑锋 instigated her to join 元门武馆 as an undercover student to snoop into their internal affairs. She quickly realises his bad intentions and did not want to assist him. She begins to take pity on 元门武馆. As things progressed, she fell in love with 宋亚仔.

告别《麻婆斗妇》与《边缘父子》的善良弱女角色，瑞恩这回饰演男仔头打女。大展拳脚早不是第一次，更大惊喜是看她如何诠释 “招摇撞骗误打误撞进入武官习武” 的小人物。

Meek role was new for Rui En, who’s known for playing strong characters

SHE never knew she could be so gentle.
Well, neither did we.
Meek and mild is not what usually comes to mind when describing this MediaCorp Princess.

But for a few months this year, local actress Rui En was just that.

She plays a docile, easily manipulated character in her new drama The In-Laws — a quantum leap from her past roles in the almost 10 years she’s been with MediaCorp.

Rui En’s usual fare consists of a steady diet of confident, strong-willed characters, such as a police officer in Metamorphosis and Unriddle, as well as a strong, independent and highly educated single girl in The Dream Catchers and My School Daze.

Granted, her more recent roles as a tragedy-stricken widow in With You and a wealthy heiress who lost her inheritance in A Tale Of 2 Cities already marked a departure from her comfort zone.

But playing a damsel in distress? That’s a first.

“I don’t like to be bullied, I stand up for myself, I’ll fight back – so this is new for me,” the 30-year-old told The New Paper.

The In-LAws premiers on Channel 8 tonight at 9pm.

It revolves around the family strife that arises when a matriarch (Li Siqi) meddles in her children’s lives.

Rui En plays Jiazhen, her sweet and gentle daughter-in-law who suffers terribly at the hands of her devious sister-in-law (Cynthia Koh).

Rui En said: “I had to change a lot. How you are as a person has got a lot to do with how you act, and this is the first time I’m doing something that’s so different from (me).”

“The character is so pitiful, and there are people trying to get her all the time.”

It also meant changing everything about herself.

Softer expression in the eyes? Check.
Slower acting momentum? Check.
Sweeter tone of voice? Check.
Subdued body language? Check.
On her inspiration for her onscreen persona, she said: “I’ve been through this stage when I was in my teens. There are some girls who are very uncomfortable with themselves…”

She was so fully immersed in her role that when she first started filming, she would lapse into her soft-spoken mannerisms even when off the set.

She was convincing enough for her co-stars to threaten ti “break” her whenever they saw her in the character.

“Cynthia would say, ‘I feel like breaking you in half, why do you talk like that…” and I would be like ‘yay’, I was very successful,” she said.

She didn’t even recognise herself when she reviewed the film after a day of shooting to see how she could improve.

“I was like, ‘Who is this?’ Oh my God. I didn’t know I could be so gentle,” she said.

She added: “Hopefully I’m convincing as a damsel in distress.”

But Rui En visibly perked up when the second season of Unriddle – which is a step back into more familiar territory – was mentioned.

She said excitedly: “I’m totally looking forward to it.”

“I love, love, love those kinds of roles, and it’s comfortable for me – I don’t have to think, ‘Is my voice right? Are my eyes right?’ ”

“I enjoyed filming Unriddle quite a lot.”

She even told the director and scriptwriter that there weren’t enough action scenes in the first season.

“There’s gonna be more,” she said with a smile.

Unriddle 2 is due to begin filming in the last quarter of the year, but Rui En won’t have time to train and prepare for the more adrenaline-pumping scenes.

She will be heading to Kuala Lumpur in May for a Channel 8 martial arts production set in the 60s and will be there for three to four months.

“I guess I will take that as training,” she said, adding she’s ready conquer new territory.

“I think I’m ready for period dramas,” she said, breaking into laughter.

“Everything that is not me is a challenge, which I like.”

再接演新剧，成为年度曝光率最高新加坡女艺人！下月轧两部剧，瑞恩与李南星、范文芳挂帅《边缘父子》，首次与阿哥、阿姐“过招”！

（新加坡讯）阿哥李南星1988年凭新加坡剧《边缘少年》（《边少》）稳坐首席小生之位，相隔23年，继前年《双子星》、《企鹅爸爸》后，他下周即将开拍新剧《边缘父子》（《边父》）。

监制袁树伟前天说，《边父》并不是《边少》续集，只是延伸了《边少》的私会党题材，剧中人物全换人，除了由李南星担正外，更邀范文芳、瑞恩齐任女主角，这也是瑞恩首次与阿哥、阿姐“过招”！

目前在拍《麻婆斗妇》的瑞恩，上周已为《边少》做造型；她将在剧中饰演一名视障义工，为了将角色揣摩好，她最近收工后，都自动自发到视障学校观摩、学习，袁树伟表示，她向来是会预先“做功课”的好演员，这次也不例外。

据悉，《麻婆》预计4月杀青，但《边父》下周即将开拍，这也意味，瑞恩或得同时轧两部剧，这也是她入行以来，首尝“轧剧”滋味！

五部作品等播映

另一厢，2011年只过了两个月，但加上《边》，瑞恩将成为年度曝光率最高的新加坡女艺人。目前播出的《乐在双城》后，由她主演、接踵而来的剧集包括《麻婆》、《边父》、《正义武馆》、《最火搭档2》，单单今年内，她就有四五部作品，平均每两个月有新剧出街，曝光率绝对是No. 1！

《边父》真人真事

袁树伟说，《边父》叙述李南星出狱后的生活，但与20年前的《边少》故事、角色都有不同，当年演出《边少》的杨莉冰、林梅娇和黄奕良，这次都不会参与演出。他也表示：“主要是希望能通过此剧，正视新加坡近来的私会党问题。”

据悉，日前才拍完《生日快乐》的范文芳，今天将为剧做造型，《边父》下周开拍，预计五六月杀青。

吴劲威踢走洪赐健

在电影《割爱》中和“阿姐”郑惠玉是母子，16岁吴劲威这次换当“阿哥”的儿子！

已出走的洪赐健最近在《乐在双城》“露脸”，《边父》开拍之际，不少网民力投他一票，希望他能与李南星以“父子档”出演《边父》，但角色已花落16岁的小帅哥吴劲威。

吴劲威去年在新加坡电影《割爱》中，饰演郑惠玉的儿子，过去的作品包括5频道《Fighting Spiders》，这次将演阿哥的儿子，袁树伟指，不论外形或气质，吴劲威都很符合角色；至于是否能像李南星20年前，凭《边父》上位，大家就得拭目以待啦。

阿二再演大姐大

继本土电影《老师嫁老大》后，范文芳“重操旧业”，再演黑社会“大姐大”！

范文芳2007年曾在新加坡电影《老师嫁老大》中，饰演黑帮头目，这次她将“重操旧业”，在《边父》中再演黑社会“大姐大”，剧中希望能借着刚出狱的李南星之力，帮她打江山。至于“大反派”，则由张耀栋担纲，他将和范文芳上演“抢地盘”戏码，令人期待。

袁树伟透露：“她和瑞恩的角色，应该说，一个是天使，一个是恶魔吗？但范文芳的角色不算反派，只是’人在江湖，身不由己’。”

至于是否会上演两女争“南”的感情戏？他说：“不会有婆妈的感情戏，很多感情戏都是内心戏。”

黄俊雄 瑞恩 打出新天地

台湾无敌长剧《爱》5月播毕，本地剧重振旗鼓，一系列马国拍摄的本地怀旧剧集将轮番上场。除了目前赶拍的《甘榜情》，5月开镜的《正义武官》演员名单亦公布，瑞恩与黄俊雄将大站拳脚，共闯武林界。

功夫高手养成记

《正》全剧将在马国取景，主要演员有瑞恩、黄俊雄、童冰玉和郑各评等。故事设定在60年代，讲述瑞恩饰演个性男仔头的女孩，终日招摇撞骗，误打误撞进入武馆习武，身手平平的她经历连串事故，逐渐成长为功夫高手，锄强扶弱。

黄俊雄则试验武馆师傅郑各评之子，同样是武林高手，并与瑞恩有感情戏。两人合作多次，去年还曾被网民投选为最佳荧幕情侣，并在《红星大奖》获颁最i荧幕搭档，今次再续前缘，可望擦出新火花。新剧预计5月初开拍，8月杀青。

马国制作 本地首播

3不怀旧剧不同于过往新马合资剧，卡士以新加坡演员为主，剧本是新鲜原创，找来曾担任《潮州家族》、《客家之歌》和《琼园咖啡香》等的编剧许声亮执笔，增加不少看点。

白薇秀、瑞恩明年战幔正式拉开，各接演三部剧，其中同演《乐在双城》、《正义武馆》，“奉旨”较劲对杠！

今年本地“公主”纷纷闹出走，仅剩白薇秀、瑞恩和欧萱，三“公主”的战幔拉开，明年谁将当道？

根据新传媒2011年本地新剧的演员、档期安排，2010年下半年没戏剧作品、因个人理由要求放长假的白薇秀，明年将高调全面回归；2011年，她和瑞恩的战幔也将正式拉开，双姝除了在《乐在双城》中较劲，据悉也将在8月份另一部本地剧《正义武馆》中二度杠上！

据悉，白薇秀除了下周与许立桦合演的“暖身作”U频道原创电影《等一等爱情》外，她目前与瑞恩、台湾新人庞蕾馨正赶拍明年情人节推出的新剧《乐在双城》；5月份，她将继《谜图》后和郑斌辉再续前缘，并和《走进走出》的部分卡司戚玉武、童冰玉合演警匪剧《警徽天职》；下半年的8月份，白薇秀将再度和瑞恩在《正义武馆》中“配对”，究竟会“打”出什么火花，令人期待。

另一厢，除了《乐》和《正》外，瑞恩和许美珍主演的《麻婆斗妇》（暂定，前名《麻辣斗妇》、《快乐3+1》）预计4月份8频道播出，她和白薇秀目前2011年各有三部，两位公主旗鼓相当，可谓平起平坐，同样受新传媒力捧。

‘准公主’周颖、童冰玉、郭蕙雯 各有1作品

从名单来看，郭蕙雯、周颖和尚未签约新传媒的童冰玉三位“准公主”，明年各有1部剧，分别是《渔米人家》、《阿娣》和《警徽天职》，曝光率和已上位的白薇秀、瑞恩相比，确实不高。

此外，预计8月份九时档播出的《万福楼》及2011年底台庆剧《星洲之夜》演员名单尚未出炉，届时两人是否能轧上一角，观众只能拭目以待啦。
