The training programme arranged by the Singapore Police Force moved on to its next major segment―unarmed tactics. MediaCorp artistes Rui En, Andie Chen Bang Jun and Cavin Soh give their take on the day’s activities and share their learning points.

Popular and cheerful actress Rui En, who plays a hardworking officer in C.L.I.F. 2 (警徽 天职 II), was feeling equally satisfied by the end of the day’s training.

“I think I learnt a lot of things I wasn’t aware of. I always thought that as women, we are disadvantaged in terms of physical size. But the training and techniques taught me that it isn’t about how big or strong you are, it’s about how smart you are.”

Although unsure what might be applicable during the actual filming and upon the completion of the scripts, at the point of training with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) at HTA, actress Rui En still found the training extremely useful.

The unarmed training segment included methods to make successful arrests and bring down suspects from a strategic distance, and the effective use of handcuffs. Trainer Senior Staff Sergeant (SSSgt) Tan Kien Hwee generously shared various self-defence secrets such as the correct ways to do a grip neck-lock or defend oneself against an attack, or to press specific acupoints on a criminal’s neck to get him to comply.

“I’ve always wanted to learn self-defence. So, I am very pleased to go through today’s training,” the friendly actress continued. “I had thought it would be easier for the guys, but am pleasantly surprised.”

“All in all, the training has been a huge help. The preparation I do for normal roles is different. Because as civilians, we don’t really know how the SPF works, which is why we are doing this drama in the first place. This is something I have always been interested in. So, it’s been a learning process for me even though I have acted in Unriddle and other cop dramas. I get to understand the way the SPF works and I’m really happy about this.”

She also shared that her character in C.L.I.F. 2 will be a bit different from the other police roles she had done before. “She’s warmer. The other roles I did were hard, aggressive. This time, she’s softer, warmer, more firm, takes her job and the welfare of others very seriously too.”

After hours of arm-twisting moves, the cast members are taught how to use handcuffs in an arrest and make their suspects comply.

Filming for this second season is on-going and C.L.I.F. 2 debuts on 18 February 2013 on Channel 8, at 9 pm.

“The instructors are so cool. I just totally look up to them. They are heroes,” Rui En raved, as she went on to share her personal impression of Police officers in Singapore. “There was this one time when we were filming a scene for Poetic Justice. I was being chased with my on-screen boyfriend by a group of people holding bats. An unaware resident in a unit above our set saw us being chased and thinking we were in trouble, called the police; and the police arrived on the scene within a few minutes! Such heroes! I felt so reassured that they are so efficient!”

The cast at Home Team Academy chills with the hardworking, dedicated people behind the sequel’s production.

…twenty live rounds in total at the Home Team Academy Shooting Range on 01 October 2012. Attending an intensive training programme planned by the Singapore Police Force, MediaCorp artistes Joanne Peh, Rui En, Qi Yu Wu, Cavin Soh, Aileen Tan and Andie Chen immersed themselves in some serious weapon instruction from the experts.

By Mabelle Yeo Hui Leng

MediaCorp artistes intently focused on correct weapon handling―the first part of the exclusive training programme conducted by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) at the Home Team Academy (HTA) as filming for C.L.I.F. 2 begins.

What do you do when you’re cast in a blockbuster Police drama about quick-footed, hard-nosed and intellectually acute real-life investigators?

Well, after a round of high fives with your pals, you assess the needful and it hits you that these guys are in outrageous shape. And since the fast-paced drama is about tracking and cracking tough cases and bringing vicious criminals down, you know you’ve got to get yourself in a strong mental and physical condition.

MediaCorp’s C.L.I.F. (警徽 天职), returning on 18 February 2013, promises more action and will deal with its own identity crises this season. A contemplative but vigorous police drama that explores technology, relationships, marriage, and the law, C.L.I.F. 2 tackles issues of self-identification with insight amidst the realism of intense crime investigative work in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Singapore Police Force (SPF), and Tanglin Police Division.

The 20-episode prime-time Channel 8 drama chronicles the day-to-day operations of Police officers while they go about their serious business of saving lives and solving complicated and gory cases based on true police files.

Audiences can expect to gain from the drama a better understanding of how the SPF works, in addition to crime prevention, detection and deterrence tips and advice.

A product of close collaborative efforts between SPF and MediaCorp, C.L.I.F. 2 has a star-studded cast consisting of both new and returning cast members from the previous season.

On 01 October 2012, right before filming for the sequel began, some key cast members such as Aileen Tan, Qi Yu Wu, Joanne Peh, Andie Chen Bang Jun, Rui En and Cavin Soh attended a special Police training programme held at the Home Team Academy (HTA) at Choa Chu Kang.

Once the briefing was done, artistes Rui En, Andie Chen and other cast members focused on practising decocking and loading pistols, while their colleagues Cavin Soh, Aileen Tan, Qi Yu Wu and Joanne Peh were ushered to a separate room where they were briefed by SI Muhd Ridzuan on how to safely handle the Taurus revolver.

Actress Rui En and actor Andie Chen Bang Jun (man in white in foreground) try to catch up with the precise sequence observed in loading and unloading the pistols.

SI Eric Lee instructs and demonstrates the right sequence of moves when drawing out the pistol.

At the end of the two-hour-long briefings and a series of motion practices with loading, unloading and holstering the guns, cast members Qi Yu Wu, Joanne Peh, Aileen Tan, Andie Chen Bang Jun, Rui En and Cavin Soh were given the much anticipated and exclusive chance at live firing. The silent atmosphere in the indoor range was palpitating.

With protective shooting glasses and ear muffs in place, the six attentive artistes, each guided by an astutely observant and helpful trainer, had their go at firing 20 live rounds each. At the end of the session, everyone was impressed by their rookie performance.

Six of C.L.I.F. 2’s key cast members present were given the rare opportunity to shoot live rounds. Qi Yu Wu (top right), Rui En (bottom left) and Joanne Peh (bottom centre) take aim. Qi gets to the heart of the training (bottom right).

Absolutely fascinated by the live firing exercise they had just completed, the artistes pose with the team of highly skilled and professional trainers at the HTA shooting range, as they prepare to make their way to the HTA gymnasium for the next part of their training programme―unarmed tactics.
