Indeed, the three shows preceding The Ultimatum featured way more down-to-earth characters engaged in humdrum, everyday activities such as going to school, playing table tennis and keeping house. Viewers could identify with the characters and the plotlines.
All three serials fared better than The Ultimatum despite starring mostly second- string artists, newcomers and veteran character actors.
My School Daze was about primary school children and their kiasu parents, and starred Chen Hanwei, Terence Cao and Rui En. It had an average of 986,000 viewers from April to May.
Table Of Glory was an idol drama which revolved around table tennis. Its stars, Joshua Ang and Dai Yangtian, are promising actors whose track records as marquee names are as yet unproven. It attracted an average of 1,016,000 viewers in April.
With a median 1,076,000 viewers, Housewives' Holiday, which aired in March, fared best of all three. The dramedy starred veteran actresses Hong Huifang, Xiang Yun and Ann Kok playing housewives with problems such as unfaithful husbands and nosey in-laws.
Obviously, viewers had no trouble identifying with such dramas dealing with real- life issues.

Besides, after acting as a couple for three consecutive dramas, the duo has developed a certain level of chemistry, even spontaneously adding extra lines during filming which did not require any form of communication beforehand.
Koh said that co-acting with different actors will result in different kinds of chemistry and audiences are not oblivious to the sparks created on screen. Even the 'cool princess' Rui En could not help but break out and laugh at the humorous pair when they start to bicker during filming.

SINGAPORE: Every school kid falls into one or more stereotypical categories in school.
There's the popular kids - half the school know who they are, there's the goody-two shoes who play by the book, there's the jocks - they spend half their time playing sports and the other half wooing members of the opposite sex, there's the brainy kids in their triple science classes, and there's the rebel kids - they spend half their time trying to break all the school rules and the other half serving detention.
The cast of "My School Daze" may be all grown up now and acting the parts of teachers instead of students, but we reckon if we put them back in a classroom, they'd very nicely fill up every category.
Three of the cast members were complete badasses who have fought, cheated or smoked their way through school. And because when there is yin, there is yang, another three of the cast members were so well-behaved they sailed through their education trouble-free. The seventh was a jock while the last two went through school in a daze.
Channelnewsasia.com rounded up the cast at a recent press conference, where they boarded the school bus down memory lane and told us who was naughty and who was nice.
The Goody-Two-Shoes
The bad kids are evened out by the good kids three against three.
Rui En sailed through school with ease, going from Singapore Chinese Girls' School to Raffles Junior College (RJC) to the National Technological University of Singapore. The naughtiest thing she has ever done? A mini water fight in the RJC canteen. Her only woe? Bad Chinese language results.
"I was my Chinese teacher’s worst nightmare because I was never very good in Chinese. Isn’t it ironic right now that I’m playing a Chinese teacher?" She joked. "So this is a message to all the kids: please pay attention during Chinese because you will get your Karma when you grow up you will end up playing Chinese teachers."
In contrast, Chen Han Wei learnt his lesson the hard way. He tried to cheat on a test in Primary School but was caught by his father, who was the teacher of his class then, and was caned in front of his classmates. The humiliation caused the father-son relationship to sour for almost two years, but the incident transformed the actor into a role-model student.
"I totally changed, I studied very hard," he said. "But I was stressed because I maintained my grades at the top three positions in class all through Secondary School. I was like a tutor and I helped a lot of my classmates, I took part in a lot of co-curricular activities, and my teachers and parents never needed to nag at me.
Also on the good student list is Eleyn Kok, who was the "goody-two-shoes, wear spectacles, look nerdy, nerdy Bukit Panjang Government High prefect". Her most mischievous act was to draw graffiti on the chalkboard - just once - and got caught. "I drew some comics on the board because I was bored, and the only time I was naughty, the vice-principal had to walk past and catch me! But I was just lightly reprimanded."
MediaCorp Channel 8's new family drama "My School Daze" features the star-studded cast, with its plot centring on school life in Singapore, revolving around students, teachers and parents.
Chan Han Wei plays a stuffy, traditional Chinese teacher who fails to command the respect and interest of his students, and eventually quits his profession to join his wife's (Ann Kok) tuition centre.
In contrast, Rui En plays a popular and trendy teacher who gives her students rides in her sports car. She shares a romantic relationship with freelance deejay Terence Cao.
Darren Lim and Cynthia Kok take on the role of typical 'kiasu' Singaporean parents who bombard their kid with endless courses and classes.

If there is one reason why you should catch MediaCorp Channel 8’s new drama My School Daze, Terence Cao will tell you it’s because Rui En is the hot, sassy teacher you never had. Or at least, he’s never had.
“I wish I had teachers like Rui En back in school,” Terence cheekily told Channelnewsasia.com during a recent press conference promoting the new drama. “If I had female teachers like her, then I’d actually turn up for classes… because I’d enjoy looking at her.”
The 42-year-old actor had earlier revealed that he used to dodge Chinese language lessons to avoid having to hand in homework, as Mother Tongue was his weakest subject and submitting one Chinese composition a year was an achievement in itself.
Still, he reckons if Rui En was his Chinese teacher then, he might have been able to pass his Chinese 'O' level exam.
If it’s any comfort at all, Terence is now more than fulfilling his boyhood fantasies of gawking at a hot teacher by 'dating' Rui En.
In the all-new family drama starting Wednesday, Terence plays Tan Xiangfeng, a freelance DJ, model and travel writer. He falls head-over-heels in love with sassy Secondary school teacher Zhang Luoyun (Rui En), popular with students for her innovative methods of teaching, but runs into trouble with her career later in the show.
On the other end of the spectrum, Chen Han Wei is the teacher you wish you'll never have. He plays Tan Xiangchun, a stuffy, traditional Chinese teacher who fails to command the respect and interest of his students.
The 40-year-old, who won the Best Actor Award for his role in "By My Side" at Sunday's Star Awards said - somewhat woefully - that although it had been his childhood ambition to become a teacher, this role is anything but what he had in mind of himself as 'Mr Chen'.
"I cannot relate to this character at all because I’m a very modern man – my character in this show is very 'ah-pek', you know..."
The drama centres on school life in Singapore, revolving around students, teachers and parents. It also features Ann Kok, Cynthia Koh, Darren Lim, Chen Tian Wen and Lin Mei Jiao.
My School Daze premieres Wednesday, April 29, 9pm on Channel 8.

It’s a Clash of the Teachers between Rui En and Chen Hanwei, who both play pedagogues, but with vastly opposing styles.
“She’s less conservative. And she believes there shouldn’t be any distance between the students and the teachers. She believes that she should treat the students like her friends and that way, she’ll win them over,” Rui En said of her role as the hip, new-age, sports car-driving Miss Zhang.

Did the lovely Rui En ever want to be a teacher when she was a child? “Honestly, I wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to be in space. Doesn’t every kid dream of that? Every little boy, lah.”
“So,” Showbiz Sista asked, “You were more like a little boy than a little girl?” “I was, I was,” Rui En said emphatically. “I grew up like a boy. I hung out with my cousin, who was one year younger than me, but was a guy. So I was into cycling, playgrounds, WWF.” No Barbies or My Little Ponies for this tomboy!
“The emphasis of the show is on the difference between me and Hanwei in terms of our ideals and values,” Rui En added. That’s right — Hanwei, who’s seen his fair share of dorky roles lately, plays the schoolmarm.
“I don’t think students will like the kind of teacher I play,” Hanwei told Showbiz Sista. “He’s very straightforward and old-fashioned, with an emphasis on rote learning. Very boring.”
Did Hanwei have teachers like himself when he was young? “Yes! A lot!” the actor exclaimed. ““Even my father, who was a teacher. Once, when I was nine or 10, we had a small test and I tried to cheat. My classmate wouldn’t let me to copy off him, so I hit him. So my father, who was also my teacher, caned me in front of the whole school. I didn’t speak to him for two years. But after I grew up, I appreciated my father because I think he did a good job. If, during that period, he had tried to protect me, I think I would still feel the shame today. After that incident, my father apologized to me, but I think I have to say sorry to him.” Aww.
Hanwei also thinks there was great chemistry between him and Rui En. “At first, I didn’t think she could act,” he said solemnly. “I thought she was a young girl who could only sing. But after working with her on By My Side recently, I think this young girl has really improved a lot. You can really feel her emotions when she’s acting. That’s why I’m very happy to work with her, and would like to work with her more. I think she can make it. Sooner or later, she will win a Best Actress award.”
With the Star Awards coming up this Sunday, Showbiz Sista will be crossing her fingers, too!
Also look out for Ann Kok as Hanwei’s wife, Terence Cao as Rui En’s love interest, and Cynthia Koh and Darren Lim paired up once again as that loudmouthed couple who gets under your skin.
Showbiz Sista, signing out. Live long and pop corn!
