Would you watch these heartland adaptations of hit shows?

In case you haven’t heard, you can now sign up to be a Ninja Warrior – right here in Singapore. Yes, fans of the riveting reality obstacle course game show – that huge phenomenon in Japan which spawned adaptations around the world – will now have a local incarnation known as Sasuke Singapore.

A course has been specially built and the show’s first episode will be telecast on MediaCorp TV Channel 5 in August, right after the National Day Parade.

Sasuke Singapore is only the latest in a long list of game and reality competition shows whose original formats have been imported and adapted to our local context, like Deal Or No Deal, Singapore Idol, Don’t Forget The Lyrics and Million Dollar Money Drop.

But why stop at game shows? Why shouldn’t we import and adapt dramas and sitcoms, too? Those are fruits ripe for the plucking. And we at Today have some cracking ideas that we think could really turn out to be foolproof hits. (And if any local channels want to produce the following shows – because let’s be honest, who wouldn’t? – we might be persuaded to sell the rights at very reasonable rates.) Here then, are what could be your next TV hits.

Cold Kuehs

While Rui En, Chen Liping and Elvin Ng are busy unriddling current criminal cases, a small group of detectives specialise in unsolved mysteries whose trails had gone cold years since – in particular, one baffling case involving the deaths of several innocent victims back in 1990, known as The Case Of The Nonya Kuehs That Had Been Left Out Too Long.

No, the annual Star Awards aren’t just about who wore what. There are actually some pretty important awards that get given out, too – like those that affirm and reward actors for the hard work, dedication and, sometimes, pure inspiration they put into their craft.

Best Actress contenders are Joanne Peh for being a gold-digging ah lian in A Tale Of Two Cities; Ann Kok for vamping it up in Bountiful Blessings; Rui En for ditzing it up in A Tale Of Two Cities; Zoe Tay for her maternal aptitude in Devotion; and Fann Wong for being a triad boss in heels in On The Fringe.

What does it take to be a Star Award acting nominee? What does it mean to be a star? As the big day approaches, five of this year’s nominees share their thoughts.

ZHENG GEPING

You’ve been acting for a long time. How do you constantly improve yourself?

I won my first Best Actor award in 2007. A lot of people didn’t believe the fact that after midnight, I put it in its box and put it away in the storeroom. I felt that I didn’t want the award to lock me in. The very next day, I started from zero. Some people might hang on to that award and as a result give themselves too much pressure. I think it’s not good.

I have also learnt things from young people and from the young, new actors. I choose to find lessons to learn from them. That’s how I encourage myself not to stagnate and push myself to accept new things. Sometimes I share my experiences with them. Some people say, “Why are you so stupid? If you teach them all you know, the young people will overtake you.” No. If you have passion and you love this industry, then you must have responsibility towards the industry. Sharing is another way of improving yourself. Rui En still calls me Teacher. I’m very proud of Rui En and Andie – the kind of effort they put in. Rui En is small but she’s really good at martial arts!

ANN KOK

What do you think of your chances this year?

I don’t know! It’s so difficult! They have all won for Best Actresses – I’m the only one who hasn’t – so I’m actually quite stressed. (Laughs) Like, they get it so easily, so they must be good. Of course I really hope I can get it but, well, that depends on my luck.

JOANNE PEH

How do you feel about your chances?

I think it’s equal chances this year. There are five of us, so I think … 20 per cent?

Rui En and Elvin Ng were the big winners at Sunday’s Star Awards Show 1 – but who came out tops in the all-important fashion stakes?

Greetings and salutations, fellow stargazers! Are you ready for your Showbiz Sista to bring you all the wild, wet fun that went on behind the scenes of the Star Awards 2012 Show 1?

Okay, so there was no champagne hot tub. But there was quite a lot of leg, midriff and decolletage.

Here are Rui En and Elvin Ng, who also won a Favourite Character award each (Elvin also bagged the Systema Charming Smile Award), graciously accepting their Favourite On-screen Couple award.

Elvin attributed the “Ruivin” appeal to “a contrast of characters”: ”For example, people felt that she was cold and icy. I was the sunny boy and warm. So then it’s a new kind of combination. After that, we worked together for a long while and there was more understanding and chemistry. Each time that we’ve worked together there has been a different feeling.”

The first show of the Star Awards 2012, held yesterday at the MediaCorp TV Theatre, celebrated the art of telling stories.

To commemorate 30 years of Channel 8 drama productions, various events throughout the night looked back on memorable moments of dramas past and present.

Awards in technical categories were given out to the men and women who worked behind the scenes.

Notably, Chong Liung Man was named Best Director for his work in C.L.I.F, while the Best Screenplay award was jointly awarded to Ang Eng Tee for On the Fringe and Chen Sew Khoon and Lau Chin Poon for the The In-Laws.

Additionally, popularity awards, determined by online voting, were also given out, and it was here that the big winners of the night emerged.

Elvin Ng went home with three awards under his belt: The Systema Charming Smile Award, the Favourite Male Character award for his work in C.L.I.F, and the Favourite On-Screen Couple award, which he shared with Rui En – fans adored the duo in Code of Honour.

As for Ng and Rui En having the best chemistry as a couple, in the opinions of fans, Rui En said: “I have a sense of security joining up with Elvin’s fan club because his supporters are also very strong!”

She added that she initially did not think much of being paired up with Ng, but “with Code of Honour, I felt that our chemistry really exists. Even my good friend told me that she was asked whether we were dating in real life.”

Rui En also bagged herself a Favourite Female Character trophy for her work in A Tale of Two Cities. She said that she planned to present the trophy to her fans immediately after the event.
