Seeing Rui En in a make-out scene. The little miss priss doesn’t drink, party or fraternise with her co-stars. And she certainly won’t kiss on screen.

Geping, you have a black belt in taekwondo and you were once local TV’s go-to action star in the ’80s and ’90s together with Chen Tianwen. It’s been many years since Ch 8 last filmed a drama of this genre. Do you think these newbies can cut it?

I used to tell my wife (actress Hong Huifang) that there’s no new generation of action stars in MediaCorp after Vincent Ng left, but with this show, I saw something. They were all a bit reserved when filming first started but as time went by, I could see the spark and hunger in their eyes. It’s very encouraging to see them put in so much effort into the training. Rui En would even grab any one of the guys to practise her moves with. I think she kee siao (went crazy) with all the fighting (laughs). I can say that 90 per cent of the fighting you see in the show was executed by the actors. If you ask me, if Rui En continues training, she can be the next Michelle Yeoh. Andie has the potential to be the next Vincent.

Looks like you guys have really bonded.

Geping: It’s true – they treat me like a father. Rui En, especially. She’s very cool, but in front of me, she behaves like a little girl, like my daughter. As for the red wine, I think I accumulated close to 30 bottles which I finished by the time filming wrapped. The guys will drink with me when they are free. Rui En doesn’t touch alcohol, but I drink almost every night (laughs).

So what’s the first thing you guys did when you got home?

Elvin: It’s like I got my life back! (Everyone laughs) Rui En and I were the last ones to wrap. I remember it was about four in the afternoon and we flew back to Singapore a couple of hours later. Both of us aren’t as adaptable so we couldn’t wait to come back. I remember sitting in the car and going (pumps fists in the air) “I got my life back!”

Bravo to the action sequences in the Ch 8 martial arts drama, Code of Honour (weekdays, 7pm). A recent ep saw Elvin and Geping come to blows in an exciting battle with each swiftly blocking the other’s punches, deftly side-stepping attacks with deep lunges and delivering flying kicks. The well-choreographed and convincing fight scenes sure make up for the clumsy storyline about Master Geping’s search for a successor for his clan.

Spar her on

Martial arts drama Code of Honour saw a bromance develop and the impossible made possible. Yup, someone managed to melt the icy RUI EN.

Code of Honour has Elvin Ng playing a pair of twin disciples in the same martial arts clan while Rui En is the kick-ass babe who falls for both of them. Alas, that double dose of lurrve doesn’t seem to have spilled over to real life, though. Psst, we espied Rui En glaring at Elvin during the press con when he joked that she used him and co-star Andie Chen as punching bags to practise her gongfu.

Aww-some moments: Sorry, Elvin and Andie, when it comes to melting the Ice Queen, no one does it like Zheng Geping. “It was the middle of the night, and I’d sprained my foot, but still had to film a swordplay scene,” recalls Rui En. “[Zheng Geping] saw my tired face and said, ‘You can do it!’ I was so touched. He was very, very sweet.” Um, is that Rui En… gushing?

In this 30-part drama set in 1960s Singapore, Zheng Geping plays a wushu master trying to save his school from two scheming disciples (Andie Chen and Zhang Wenxiang). Caught in the power struggle, too, is a fishmonger (Elvin Ng) who bears an uncanny resemblance to the master’s dead son (Yes, we smell something fishy, too). Shot in KL and Muar, this production also stars Rui En, Paige Chua and Chris Tong.

Give Face!

Oh, the things some male stars do to their faces.

They scruff it up…

Elvin Ng and Tay Ping Hui are taking the road unshaven for their new drama, Unriddle 2. The two stars play police officers in the sequel to last year’s popular crime procedural. Maybe it’s a hint that the show will be grittier, or maybe the stars were inspired by the ‘Movember Movement’, the growing-a-moustache-in-November charity event raises awareness and funds for prostate cancer. Whatever the reason, we think Elvin and TPH have never looked hairier..we mean hotter. The 20-episode serial, which also stars Rui En, Chen Liping and Rebecca Lim, is slated to air next March.

Unriddle 2 最火搭档 II debuts 5 March 2012 9pm on Channel 8.

Love Thy Ratings

Lessons Ch 8 can learn from their most-watched drama serials of 2011 thus far.

For the record

Top 3 dramas of 2011:

1. Love Thy Neighbour (*941,000)
2. C.L.I.F (924,000)
3. A Tale of 2 Cities (904,000)

Online (via xinmsn’s Catch-Up TV):

1. On the Fringe II (*1.37mil)
2. The In-Laws (over 1 mil)
3. C.L.I.F (over 900,000)

(*Numbers refers to average viewership/clicks)

1. For better or For Worse Hog the Headlines

They came, they saw, they complained. Love Thy Neighbour and On the Fringe II aren’t just Ch 8 dramas that people had the most grouses about. They also ranked tops in viewership so far this year. Hit a raw nerve by extolling the sensitivities about living next door to foreigners? By all means. Co-stars who engage in a passive-aggressive spat over a ‘rape’ scene? Why not? Who’s getting the last laugh now?

2. The Rui En – Joanne Peh Factor

Rui En hogged the screens with On the Fringe II, A Tale of 2 Cities and The In-Laws, while Joanne Peh kicked butt in C.L.I.F and A Tale of 2 Cities.

Idle drama

We imagine what the ultimate Ch 8 ratings winner could look like.

Brothers and teen idol boyband duo trying to break into the regional market
+
Leticia Bongnino, long-suffering maid and occassional bodyguard / personal assistant to the boyband. She is later found dead, stabbed by her waiter boyfriend
X
Slave-driver, employer of Leticia and devious older sister and manager of boyband brother duo
+
Human rights activist, cop-in-charge of investigating Leticia’s case, and Rui En’s childhood arch-nemesis who’ll never let her get away with murder
=
Ratings gold!
