SHE is known for favouring Marlene Dietrich-style androgynous looks at events such as the Star Awards, but as Rui En tells us, she’s actually quite the “girly girl”. The 29-year-old actress will soon be seen alongside Chen Liping and Tay Ping Hui in Unriddle, a new MediaCorp TV Channel 8 drama. She tells us about shopping, wearing shorts and slippers, and her love for leopard print.
How often do you shop?
Right now, I shop only if I need something for work, say like for a press event. If not, I’m totally comfortable in T-shirt, shorts and slippers. Literally, everywhere I go, that’s my uniform (laughs).
What are your biggest shopping weaknesses?
Anything with studs, leopard print, or black leather. (Points to the leopard-print peep-toe heels she is wearing.) I only have these, but I like them so much, I wear them over and over again at every press conference. Once I like something, I keep wearing it. Other than that, my weaknesses are make-up, skincare and haircare. I’m actually quite a girly girl!
Where are your favourite places to shop?
I really like Topshop and H&M. But, when I go into shops and try things on, I tend to make impulse buys, so I prefer to shop online. When I see something there, I’ll wait, and I’ll think, and I’ll keep looking at the photos online (before I buy it).
What’s your best buy?
My best buys are things I keep re-wearing, such as an H&M jacket I’ve worn to one Star Awards ceremony, and this pair of shoes. Because I’ve worn them so many times, I’ve justified their cost (laughs). I bought the H&M jacket online a few years ago, it cost between $200 and $300. These shoes are Steve Madden. I bought them online for less than $200 about a year ago.
What’s the last thing you bought while shopping?
This top I’m wearing now. It’s from Topshop, and it cost about $100.
